I've been wondering where you disappeared to! They look really good! Love the gradation on the swords! Did you use an airbrush to achieve that effect? Great job on the basing too!

How'd you do the gold? It's hard to get all-gold models looking good, but you've definitely managed it.

Thanks guys!
yes, the 30k bug has bit me again so I'm back to doing Heresy stuff.
The power swords on the Custodes was done with an airbrush. I start off by painting the sword with a dark blue then drybrushing up a couple colors. I keep my strokes all in the same direction that way any streaks give off a power weapon effect on the blade. Then I use Vallejo game color USAF medium grey highlighted up to white by just adding white to the mix until I was spraying basically pure white while slowly backing up until towards the end I'm only spraying the tip of the sword. I then edge highlight the sword with white.
As for the Gold:
Black undercoat vallejo model color burnt umber over the whole model (in case the gold misses an area it keeps the under layer warm) vallejo metal color gold 3/1 with vallejo game color red ink gloss varnish GW gloss ink devlan mud light drybrush (downstrokes only) GW Golden Griffon edge highlight vallejo model air chrome (model color would be just as fine but I like to use air paints through a brush as they're already thinned to the consistency I like for a brush)

Well, that's quite the process! I feel as though, especially on the Gold, that it's just a few too many steps. You could probably achieve the exact same look in 3 steps. 1) base coat, 2) drubrush, and 3) highlight. I could be the coloring that isn't truly showing the level of detail that you went to though. Maybe if you started with a much darker, bronze base coat color and built it up from there?

Maybe if you started with a much darker, bronze base coat color and built it up from there? I could combine the first two steps with a brown primer, but the pictures don't do the model justice. I want these guys to have this level of detail as Custodes are each individual creations, and they're worthy of such a detailed paint scheme. It's an army of 60ppm characters in a game of 5-15ppm plebs. I only need to paint around 20 of these guys for a complete army. Once I add the three dreads (gotta have one of each type!) and the tanks my army is pretty much complete! Here's my inspiration: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDwiHPen3ZQ&t=864sI really don't mind the additional work. I'm so busy with work, kids, and a new house I'm only painting about 10 hours a week; and gold has been incredibly fun to paint, much more than I thought it would.

I need to take more pictures! Here’s status shots of my current guardian squad I’m working on. These pics are a few days old I’ve made a bit more progress since then but...I only have this picture to prove it: The primarch is for one of my brothers I got it for him and was working on fixing it as it came assembled and broke during shipping. Anyone know who it is?!

Possibly Vulkan. No idea if he’s been released but the cloak looks like it’s dragon skin

I had to browse the primarchs on Forgeworld after I posted and my top 3 models are probably Vulkan, Dorn and Alpharius

Alpharius is my favorite. Followed by Vulkan. Followed by Corax.
My legion is Thousand Sons so of course I have to also list Magnus there too. His model isn't bad but it's not exactly inspiring either.

I'm just glad the nipple horns were removed (sculptor drew influence from the 50k Magnus which was released first)

Those power weapon blades just look amazing. Such a cool contrast to the armour

Those power weapon blades just look amazing. Such a cool contrast to the armour Thanks! I'm mostly pleased with the way they turned out, there's definitely some room for improvement there. It's a new airbrush technique I've been trying out with these guys; there may have been some swearing involved after the third attempt...(I had to repaint the blades a couple times because my airbrush kept splattering)
