I can’t believe I’ve not got a dedicated thread for dwarf lists but I could find one so here one is!
This years club competition is going to be based on (ok plagiarised from) one of the Brawler Bash GT’s. Hopefully it will happen as this year there has been a distinct lack of enthusiasm for 8th around the club, I suspect due to the rise of KOW. As such numbers taking part are likely to be half those from last year (booooo). I’ll post the comp pack elsewhere but you may well get a few lists on different armies, from me, if only so Bluke isn’t sure what I’m going to take!
For those who haven’t come across brawler bash, points are mainly gained for killing stuff (with some bonuses for objectives). Preamble aside, this the first list.
Throng of Karak Silvertop
Characters
Runesmith (general) - Ro Spellbreaking, Ro Stone, Silver horn of Vengence, shield - 138pts
Thane (bsb) - MRo Valaya, Ro Slowness, shield - 193pts
Engineer - pistol - 76pts
Grimm Burloksson - 165pts
Core
28 Dwarf Warriors - FC, GW - 310pts
10 Quarrellers - GW - 140pts
12 Quarrellers - GW, standard - 178pts
Special
Cannon - Ro Forging - 145pts
Gyrocoptor - 80pts
Gyrocoptor - 80pts
28 Hammerers - FC, MRo Groth One Eye - 497pts
Rare
Organ gun - Ro Accuracy - 145pts
19 Irondrakes - FC, drake pistols (champion), Ro Slowness - 350pts
Total - 2497
Now there is nothing particularly new or original about the list I admit.
I took a chance on the thane taking valaya over grungni as I want to ensure equal dispelling vs level 4’s.
Warriors were taken over longbeards as they are cheaper so I could fit in more bodies and I’ve taken GWs on everything as it’s all about damage output rather than mitigation.
Both the warriors and hammerers will likely be fielded 6 wide.
I’ve only taken a standard on one unit of quarrellers, figuring the additional standard wouldn’t make too much difference for the army break point (fortitude of 7 vs 8) and I quite liked the additional shots from two extra bodies in the unit.
Both the Runesmith and bsb are likely to go in the warriors but there is flexibility in that.
And with regards to general having the highest leadership, the club play that a bsb is excluded.
I took Grimm to mainly buff the irondrakes (and I’ve not taken him before). First turn he can buff the range of the quarrellers (if needed). He’s the one link in the list I’m not sure about as I could add in another war machine for the same price. I think the utility of re-rolling 20 ranged attacks on the Irondrakes is probably worth it (especially considering how highly I regard the unit anyway + I really like his model!). If anyone’s had experience of using him I’d love to know.
As you can see, the list has a strong core of Str 5 shooting and a couple of sizeable blocks of GW dwarves. Whether that is enough is the question.

I think if you are writing an all comers list I would generally opt for GW over shields on front-line infantry since more often than not you will be striking last anyway. Regarding the Engineer and Grimm, do you need both? Seems a little overkill Silver Horn of Vengeance - expensive if you may not be charging, especially when your list is tooled up for maximising shooting. Growth One Eye - again expensive when you have it on a unit which is already Stubborn, and you are Dwarfs with high Ld and a BSB Rune of Slowness on the BSB - I guess you are trying to ensure the charge with your Warriors and couple it with the Silver Horn. I would personally spend the points elsewhere because this looks like one of my wonderful plans which never actually works If you club together all those points you could probably drop another unit of something or another war machine. I am generally a fan of bodies on the table though.

I am generally a fan of bodies on the table though. I know what you mean about the wonderful plans. I'm very guilty of using things which look great on paper but which never work out! The silver horn is another thing (as is Grimm) that i'd never gotten round to using with the dwarves but it is a bit conditional! I do have to say I am such a massive fan of Groth. I'll normally any small units of shooters in the bubble, effectively making every single unit in my list stubborn. It's one of those things that opponents hate. I do take it a lot on dwarves so it's probably good that I don't for a change. Grimm and the Engineer have different roles in the list and as I'm determined to take at least one thing I've not taken before, then I think i'll keep Grimm. So with that, the list has been slightly refined. Adding a standard and some dwarf warriors, whilst dropping some quarrellers in core. This gives the army a fortitude of 8 (with a break point of 3). A reasonable buffer I feel. With the points saved from dropping the horn, Ro Slowness and MRo Groth, I've put in a fully tooled up Grudge Thrower. Not my favourite warmachine but again it's one I rarely use, so it will be good to give it a run of games (if I go for this list). Characters - 492pts Runesmith (general) - Ro Spellbreaking, Ro Stone, shield - 93pts Thane (bsb) - MRo Valaya, shield - 158pts Engineer - pistol - 76pts Grimm Burloksson - 165pts Core - 630pts30 Dwarf Warriors - FC, GW - 310pts 10 Quarrellers - GW, standard - 150pts 10 Quarrellers - GW, standard - 150pts Special - 883pts Cannon - Ro Forging - 145pts Grudge Thrower - Ro Forging, Ro Accurracy, Ro Penetrating - 170pts Gyrocoptor - 80pts Gyrocoptor - 80pts 28 Hammerers - FC - 378pts Rare - 495pts Organ gun - Ro Accuracy - 145pts 19 Irondrakes - FC, drake pistols (champion), Ro Slowness - 350pts Total - 2500pts

Can’t critique much - that’s a great list!

Just seems really solid, not much to criticize. One thing i lack is seeing no GW's on your characters, why is that? Just one cannon in 2.5K is also on the low side, but forging and your CC dwarves will keep it safe i guess. I feel it is often possible to hide my monsters from just one cannon, but if the opponent has two with interlocking lines of fire... good luck. An Organ gun is also great though, so it is more up to personal taste/local meta.
Why did you take Quarrelers over Thunderers, is the range that big of a deal? Or is it more that due to the Irondrakes, you feel like you do not need as much gunpowder?

In this list the characters are more for support so I’ve gone with armour and parry over attacks to help protect them (whilst keeping them cheapish). The high Str attacks will come from the troops who pretty much all have GW. I decided to use a Grudge thrower instead of a 2nd cannon, mainly as something different. The Ro Penetrating will give it S10 so it is a pseudo cannon. It isn’t as accurate but has other strengths such as indirect fire and is a bit more flexible. To be honest I’ve not gotten on too well with it in prev games but this will force me into using it for a number of games. The quarrellers are taken for the range, I’ve always found that trumps the extra AP as with their normal targets, the ap makes less of a difference. With Grimm in the list, one unit will have some potential disgusting range on the first turn. As you also rightly guessed, for harder hitting fire power, there is the Irondrakes

I like it. I think you have pretty much all of your bases covered. Good call on making your characters more survivable rather than killy. The rest of your army has the hitting power so I don't think you're missing anything there.
As for Grimm, I've used him with a unit of 20 Irondrakes and he's awesome with them. Simply being able to reroll any misses of those Drakeguns is icing on the cake! That will give you on average 15, S5 hits every time. Those 20 Irondrakes will roast absolutely everything! And if a charging unit fails to get into close combat with them..... Not to mention Grimm's Shotgun. As many as 6, S4 shots? Yum, YES PLEASE! And putting him in a unit of Quarrellers at the outset of the game will force your opponent's hand early on. Just have him close to your Irondrakes.
I like that you included a Grudge Thrower. Again, no hiding your nasty monsters or wizard bunkers from that. If it hits, it'll be deadly.
Regarding MRoGroth, Why not put that on the BSB, and the MRoValaya on the Hammerers? That way, he could be making the Warriors stubborn and the Hammerers don't need it since they're Stubborn already. They could tote the LV4 equalizer.

mottdon, It’s a good call on the banners. Even in the final list I should move the MRo Valaya onto the hammerers and then just tool the bsb for defence (same advice I gave Greg).

I need some irondrakes Love the amped up Grudge Thrower. Those things can win games! I think this is a solid dwarf list that will be hard to break down. Staunch blocks.

I’ve either got a standard 2.5k or a 1.5 Triumph and Treachery game coming up and it’s been a while since I’ve dug our the dwarves. As such either way these boys will be hitting the table.
2.5k list
Runesmith (General) - shield, Ro Stone, Ro Iron, Ro Striking, Ro spellbreaking - 123pts Thane (BSB) - MRo Gromril, Ro Iron, GW, Oathstone - 171pts Runesmith - shield, Ro Stone, Ro furnace, Ro Spellbreaking - 98pts Daemonslayer - MRo Swiftness, Ro Fury, Ro Might- 215pts
39 Longbeards - FC, GW, Ro Stoicism, Ro Sanctuary - 626pts 28 Ironbreakers - FC, Ro Stoicism - 457pts 39 Slayers - musician, standard, Strollaz Rune - 523pts
Gyrocoptor - 80pts Gyrocoptor - 80pts Gyrobomber - 125pts
I basically wanted to take a wacking great horde of slayers with a character, so I have 😁. I then thought let’s take no ‘proper’ warmachines so not to fully handicap myself I thought ‘airforce’, so that’s a couple of gyros and the ever unreliable bomber. With these running amok and strollaz on the slayers putting them in someone’s face very early, I figured that the rest of the force could afford to take stubborn over strollaz. The breakers were taken as I rarely take them over hammerers and the GW Longbeards were to add combat punch. The other characters weren’t anything unusual but I made sure the general/bsb were sporting an additional wound each as I find it does tend to make a difference (as does the additional pip of WS on the general).
Ideally the list would have had a horde of Longbeards, a horde of miners and a horde of rangers but I’ve not finished the miners yet so that will wait until another day.

The Daemonslayer runes are very punchy - I prefer the Rune of Parrying over the Rune of Fury; it's made a big difference to his survivability in the past, particularly against lowly troopers who'll often only be hitting on 6s and wounding on 6s.
I'm also worried about the single Strollaz block. I don't think Strollaz lists are particularly strong - their advantage is more the psychological effect of unexpectedly having some angry dwarves in your face turn 1, rather than having to close the distance to a static castle/gunline. If you're up against an opponent that can mess you your Gyros' movement (Skaven mainly) then they're in real trouble. Other armies will just feed the Slayers chaff or focus them down while the rest of your army trudges across.
It'd feel a stronger list if at least one of the other units had Strollaz too, or if you managed to fit some Rangers in.

I did initially have parrying on the slayer lord but I took it off as I thought it wasn’t very slayer-ish. It’s why only the slayers have strollaz as they would be hurtling across to get at their foes. That said I also know that I’m playing Bluke and he has just Bretonnians and Warriors (unless he’s picked up another force on the sly) and does bring tougher lists. Hmmm I might just bring out the Lizards for fun, finally give them an outing. The issue with that is they are not fully painted....decisions decisions

The Road to Riotville
With new year looming, thoughts of Riotville have started to appear. I’m still thinking of taking Lizards but as I’ve yet to paint a single rank and file mini (hey I’ve been distracted 😉), I thought I’d better put a few fallback lists together and you know me, I love list bashing. It’s also been a while since the dwarves have hit the table.
Riotville uses 1800pt lists but I think everything else goes (though it’s not a super competitive day). The only thing I was looking to not do is take standard warmachines.
List 1- Grimm
3 main blocks all within a stubborn bubble. Irondrakes take the role of the warmachines in the list. Quarrellers are a throw away unit, just there for chaff.
Runesmith (General) - shield, Ro Stone, Ro Spellbreaking - 93pts Thane ((BSB) - MRo Gromril, Ro Furnace, GW - 131pts Grimm Burlockson - 165pts
29 Warriors - FC, GW - 320pts 10 Quarrellers - shields - 130pts
27 Hammerers - musician, standard, Ro Groth One-eye - 473pts Gyrocoptor - 80pts Gyrocoptor - 80pts
18 Irondrakes - musician, standard, Ro Slowness
Total - 1,797pts
List 2 - Distractions
This is a more silly list. The aim is to get a lot of different elements into an opponents lines to distract them (quite if it would work is another thing!). The dragon slayers start in the unit but would likely then pop out to cause mischief.
Runesmith (General), shield, Ro Stone, Ro Spellbreaking, Ro striking - 103pts Thane (BSB), GW, MRo Gromril - 126pts Runesmith - shield, Ro Stone - 68pts Dragon slayer - 70pts Dragon slayer - 70pts
30 Longbeards, FC, shields, Ro Stoicism - 455pts
Gyrocoptor - 80pts Gyrocoptor - 80pts 10 Miners - 100pts 20 Slayers - musician, standard, strollaz rune
19 Ironbreakers - FC, Ro Slowness, brace of drake fire pistols (champion) - 350pts
Total - 1797pts

I like the look of list 2 myself! Distraction may well be a good technique in an age of WFB when big blocks are king.
If you fancy play testing in the new year, I think I've settled on Empire to take. Although I've yet to paint most of it too!
I'm painting up 2500pts then choosing from there where to cut back
