Hello everyone! I'm looking to play in my first ever WFB tournament with some High Elves at 2000 pts. I've written up three lists that I think I can get fully painted in time and that I think all look interesting, and am having some trouble deciding between them. I'd appreciate any suggestions or thoughts! The lists are not the typical High Elf tournament lists (no BotWD, no Silver Helm Bus). I'm open to modifying the lists some as well, but there are limits. I cannot buy and paint a bus of Silver Helms in time for the tournament!
List 1: Eltharion the Grim, Warden of Tor Yvresse w/ Lore of Metal (295) Noble BSB w/ Heavy Armor, Shield, Sword of Might, Talisman of Protection (136) Mage Level 2 w/ Dispel Scroll, Khaine’s Ring of Fury, Lore of High Magic (170) 5x Ellyrian Reavers w/ Bows (85) 20x Spearmen FC (210) 20x Spearmen FC (210) 21x Phoenix Guard FC w/ Razor Banner (390) 5x Dragon Princes of Caledor FC (175) Frostheart Phoenix (240) 1996
List 2: Anointed of Asuryan w/ Giant Blade, Crown of Command, Enchanted Shield (310) Mage Level 2 w/ Dispel Scroll, Khaine’s Ring of Fury, Lore of High Magic (170) Noble BSB w/ Sword of Might, Heavy Armor, Shield, Talisman of Endurance (151) 5x Ellyrian Reavers w/ Bows (85) 20x Spearmen FC (210) 20x Spearmen FC (210) 21x Swordmasters of Hoeth FC (303) 10x Dragon Princes of Caledor FC (320) Frostheart Phoenix (240) 1999
List 3:
Archmage Level 4 w/ Talisman of Preservation, Dispel Scroll, Lore of Shadow (290) Caradryan on Ashtari (420) 5x Ellyrian Reavers w/ Bows (85) 20x Spearmen FC (210) 20x Spearmen FC (210) 10x Dragon Princes of Caledor FC (320) Flamespyre Phoenix (225) Frostheart Phoenix (240) 2000
As you can see, my play style/list structure is very much charge forward and punch the enemy in the face with CC. It's worked out well for me sometimes, and failed horribly others. I'm more looking to have a good couple games in this tournament than to try to decimate the competition, so I'm okay with my lists being slightly worse than top-tier, but I'd also like to win a game, or at least put up a solid fight in all of them.
Suggestions for improvements are welcome, along with an idea of which list looks to be the best/most fun!

Exciting to hear you have a tournament coming up! My general thoughts are as follows, but note: I don’t really play High Elves a whole lot.
For 2k+ games, I normally like to bring a lvl 4. In a tournament, maybe even more so. Which leans me over to list 3.
However, I fear 2 units of 20 Spearmen are just not good enough. They’ll get roflcoptered by many units. Instead, i’d opt to merge those 2 units for 1 fat horde of 10 Spearmen. Less mobile, yes, but you get mobility from the Phoenix and Dragon Princes. But at 10 wide, you’re looking at like 40 attacks to the front.
This feedback assumes no additional models are painted, of course. I don’t know what else you have available.

Are you able to give us any more detail on the tournament pack? I’m in agreement that units of 20 spear seem light on numbers but you may have included them for specific roles/objectives. They are also quite a static defensive unit in an army that, as you say, seems generally fast and hard hitting.
In any of your lists, I’d be tempted to perhaps drop one of them for 15 or so archers and beef the other one up by at least another 5 spears (though I don’t know what models you have).
The main thing is to use a list you enjoy playing and feel comfortable with. If you’ve used variations of this list before then you’ll likely do better with it against opponents than taking a fresh list you’ve had no experience with.

Yes, of course. The tournament pack is pretty simple overall. 2000 pts, no End Times units or rules, so 25% Lords and Heroes. No single model or unit is allowed to be more than 500 pts, but that's before characters get added in during the game. Spell casting is restricted to wizard level + 2 for the number of dice, ie a level 2 wizard can never use more than 4 dice to cast. The three scenarios are meeting engagement, battleline, and blood and glory, but meeting engagement will use the battleline deployment instead of the diagonal table setup. There are also a few points that can be scored outside of the battles for the following conditions: no wizards in your army, no warmachines in your army, no special characters in your army, and having a fully painted army.
I agree the Spearmen units are small. There wasn't a significant plan associated with that, I just usually bring a unit of 30 Spears and another of 25 when I'm playing at 2500 points, so to drop the list to 2000 I just cut some Spearmen from those units.
I do have some Archers, but they are all unpainted. It would be an interesting challenge to set myself to try to get them done!
Outside of the models used in the above lists, I've also got 2 more Phoenix Guard, 5 more Swordmasters, a Griffon Rider, a Dragon Mage of Caledor, and about 15 Spearmen. I tend to buy much faster than I paint, so a lot of my Elves are still on sprues!
So an adjusted List 3 would be: Archmage Level 4 w/ Talisman of Preservation, Dispel Scroll, Lore of Shadow (290) Caradryan on Ashtari (420) 5x Ellyrian Reavers w/ Bows (85) 43x Spearmen FC (417) 10x Dragon Princes of Caledor FC (320) Flamespyre Phoenix (225) Frostheart Phoenix (240) 1997

My first instinct is the same about the spears. But then started to calculate. As it is HE all 20(3rows of support) fight and there is absolutely no gain in combing then to a horde unless you upper to 50 as all 50 fight in horde(4rows of support) . So either size up to 25-30 in one unit gives it more defensive staying power. Or size up a lot to a horde of 50. I would rather play 2mobile units of 20 next to each other than one unit of 40ish. My main view is as always and I always fail here too. Chaff. You need eagles or more reavers. If you want to be offensive you need chaff to tie up/redirect bad matchups. I like the third list too. But maybe 3 Phoenix is a little bit much, maybe remove 1 add 2 eagles, upper spears to 50. And add a banner to Spears, razor?

I'm in the "one block of Spearelves" crowd. Yes, you'll get more attacks from two blocks, but Spearelves (especially HE ones) are rubbish - they die easily and put out puny S3 attacks. You need ranks to break Steadfast (vital as your other units will struggle to break that, so will need to be in combat alongside them) and also to provide them some staying power, as they will be slaughtered easily. I don't think you need to go up to horde size - I'm with Strut on that, at least.
Your adjusted list 3 gets the Spearelves right, but is weak on overall model count, plus banners for blood + glory. The chief strength/killing power of High Elves is their three elite Special infantry unit - Phoenix Guard, Swordmasters and White Lions. Any list that omits them entirely needs to have a clear plan, and I'm not sure I see yours in that list. Phoenixes are good, but they don't have Star Dragon durability and damage output. Dragon Princes are terrible if they don't break a unit on the charge, and as Strut says you lack the chaff to ensure you get the right match-ups. Your Archmage is also going to be in your only ranked combat unit rather than bunkered somewhere safer (e.g. Archers).
He's a lovely model but I'd suggest dropping at least Caradryan to get a unit of PG/SM/WL in, and potentially another phoenix and/or rank of Dragon Princes to fit in a BSB, Archers and Eagle.
If you really want to go for three phoenixes (and I can understand how cool the appeal is), I think the Archmage needs to go so you can up your model count elsewhere.

Okay, following a combination of everyone's suggestions, how does this look for a new list?
Archmage Level 4 w/ Khaine's Ring of Fury, Dispel Scroll, Talisman of Preservation, Lore of Life Noble BSB w/ Heavy Armor, Shield, Sword of Might, Talisman of Endurance 5x Ellyrian Reavers w/ Bows, Musician 10x Lothern Sea Guard w/ Standard 30x Spearmen FC w/ Banner of Swiftness 10x Dragon Princes of Caledor FC w/ Banner of Eternal Flame 23x Swordmasters of Hoeth FC w/ Razor Standard Frostheart Phoenix Great Eagle 2000
The Archmage can bunker in the Sea Guard to stay off the front lines, and the Spearmen unit is increased in size. A Great Eagle has been added to act as chaff, and the Swordmasters to provide a heavy ranked-combat unit. The list also has a much higher durability in Blood and Glory with 5 banners.

I think you've got more balance there. I would suggest changing the Sea Guard to Archers if you think you can get some painted in time, as they're cheaper and have a better range - the Sea Guard aren't offering you anything extra at that unit size.

Would the saving from changing sea guard to archers allow you to add an extra spearmen or Swordmasters? If so definitely do it!

I like the new third list and also agree with two earlier posts about archers.

Hi, without Reading previous comments: I’ve skipped your first 2 lists as soon as I saw the lord choice. Go for the Third one. Make 2 units of DP and only a musician should so. Make them the hammer for your Phoenix anvil. Drop spearelves and make them either seaguard or regular archers. Makes you Shadow magic better as well

I like this more and think it's likely that in at least one of the games you will be glad that you included a BSB and/or eagle. Making a 50 spear elf horde unit flee and killing it with a Varghulf off a lucky terror test fail (due to no bsb reroll) is a classic Warhammer memory I have. I also think the Swordmasters add some great killing power. The razor banner will help them strike fear into the likes of cavalry.

I’d stillbetempted to replace the razor standard with botwd. I do think the banner is ridiculous for the points but I don’t think anyone would begrudge giving it to swordmasters 😀
