Hi Guys,
A friend of mine is considering buying himself an army. In the distant past (we’re talking 4th or 5th) he played Some Skaven but it’s not like he still owns them.
We currently have like 4 active people on our playgroup who own / play following armies:
Guy1: Warriors of Chaos, Daemons of Chaos
Guy2: Warriors of Chaos
Guy3: Vampire Counts, Ogre Kingdoms, Dark Elves, Skaven, Dwarfs, Empire
Me: High Elves, Wood Elves, Dark Elves
So he basicly wants an army (and I quote) “to smash guy3 each and every time” (not Caring about flavour or look). I personality know guy3 hates High Elves.
Now my advice for anyone starting out would either be WoC or Ogre Kingdoms, as they are pretty straight forward.
What army would you advice? Money isnt an issue

Guy 3 has 6 armies so I doubt you can pick one which will win every time against all of them.
If your friend is intending on painting his army my advice would be pick the most aesthetically pleasing one.
If not all he can do is pick one of the higher tier armies and take as dirty lists as possible

Well the nastiest armies are probably High Elves (Phoenix Guard, Banner of the World Dragon), Warriors of Chaos (unkillable Daemon Prince), Skaven (everything...), while Dark Elves, Wood Elves (evasion) and Vampire Counts all have some unpleasant builds. I'd put the High Elves as the easiest and best to go for, as they're more conventional being good at moving, magic, shooting and combat. Also, if he wants to smash person 3, and they hate High Elves... Alternatively, because you've not got any Beastmen players, and variety is the spice of life, tell him they're the strongest army

It also helps that most the High Elf range is still available - special characters like Alarielle would cause the most difficulty tracking down; core units like Archers/Spearmen or Bolt Throwers that aren't around any more can be substituted with their Wood/Dark Elf equivalents, and I think there's still a fair number of Island of Blood models knocking around on ebay.

HE are easy to collect, even in the current situation. I know a store that still has an Island of Blood laying around, and HE being a popular army is very available on eBay. I might suggest HE, as I know first hand it’s likely the best army in uncomped situations (not wanna troll or create a debate here, it’s just how I feel). Then again, HE are my main army 😅 How about Dwarfs? A gunline seems verry viable and is likely easy to play, as your only Descisions would be what to shoot first, where HE do require a good movement phase

Dwarf gunlines aren't exciting to play with or against, so I wouldn't encourage them, but yes they are strong. However, you're entirely reliant on getting deployment right, and if you screw that up you're in serious trouble - deployment being something that most beginners struggle with until they have a good grasp of their units plus their opponent's units.

You don't have to play Dwarfs as a pure gunline. They have a strong book in general. You can just make use of their superior artillery

Dwarf vs dwarf matchups can be fun but would he want to play an army that player 3 already plays?

Avoiding an army guy3 has Will be tough, I only posted the armies he has 4000 pts + off. He also had O&G, Wood Elves and Daemons, but ‘only’ like 1500-2000 pts

Yes for lizzies. Also, fun to play with good core warriors. Can be abuse with skink spam and cowboys. And have a great magic phase with slann.
You can also lend him armies if he wants to try first.

Lizardmen is one of those armies I faced only 2 times (smashing them in both with my HE) and for some reason know verry little of. For most armies I know whats OP, for Lizardmen my best knowledge is that there Slanns (or whatever Jabba the Hut is called) are arguably the best casters in the game, and that Temple Guard should be good as well. In fact I know so little of them that I have Some models somehow laying around that I can’t even identify 😄 so I cant really help him get started
