Hi, I'm new to 8th ed and have some unit size questions. As I understand it larger units are generally needed in 8th ed.
For 6th ed I like my Orc units at about 25 or 30 Orcs each. Is that size still valid? I don't mind going up to 36 Orcs but any larger seems unwieldy.
How about Goblins. I like 42 Gobbos a unit, is that too small?

Those unit sizes are fine for greenskins. Although I see 50 a lot for goblins.

I very often see hordes of Orcs at 40. 10 wide, 4 deep. I happen to play Savage Orcs a lot, so maybe that makes a difference. I often see Goblins 5 wide x 7 or 8 or 9 deep. 35ish to 40+. Most folks seem to think 8th isn't a great system for multiple small units.

Orcboy welcome!
I'm a Goblin player (rarely I use Orcs). I prefer my gobbos in units of 50. I do some 5-wide, and they are hard to break because of steadfast. Others, especially with bows, I like to put in horde formation.

Thanks guys!
I see the advantage of 10 wide, 4 deep for Savage Orcs especially with two hand weapons, does it make a difference for regular orcs?

40 Savage Orc Big 'Uns with Additional Hand Weapons are hard to beat. They'll take a beating, but man, are they gonna dish out some punishment in return! Normal attacks, plus additional hand weapons, plus frenzied, plus horde formation, plus choppaz? Ouch! That's 50 attacks at S5 in the first round of combat! Not much that can stand up to that. The 40 count is to absorb damage. You can do it with 30, but you'll need some bigger targets to draw your opponents attention (Mangler Squigs) while they advance into combat. A Savage Orc Shaman/Great Shaman with the Lucky Shrunken Head/and possibly an Obsidian Amulet/Trinket helps this unit out a lot as well.

That makes a scary unit even more killy by virtue of being more survivable.
