My dogs of war finally suffered their first defeat at the claws of cold blooded and scaly foes. We played 2000 points. I used the 8th edition updated army list for dogs of war written for my club (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lMIgoImsQjZngq9-MWY-bZIG2_HuLmoAawYE9pEuKh8) And we played the following custom scenario docs.google.com/document/d/1s-EYgVdzeloo2FE8wyh2Y4W1-1gq929qX84ZyBFazDYDow we’re defending and lizards were attacking. Mercs deployed with a cannon and the marksmen of miragliano defending the brewery, while the Desert Dogs and Long Drong defending the cattle pen. Leopoldo leopard company was joined by a mercenary general with an ogre blade, and Golgfag setup his lads right smack in the middle. A lvl 4 light wizard deployed on her own between the pikes and the dwarves. The lizards were an infantry heavy army, setting skinks on the flanks with 3 blocks of saurus (2 normal and 1 temple guard) in the center. Salamander packs were distributed towards the brewery and ripperdactyls took the opposite wing. Finally a bastilidon squatted between the temple guard and core saurus, and an albino skink priest joined the core block.

The first two turns were mostly maneuver based. Golgfag and Al Muktar both used vanguard to get into an aggressive position while artillery and crossbow potshots were largely ineffective. The lizardmen were able to conjure up an amazing first round of shooting, both skink units rolling more than 50% of their shots as poison attacks, killing one of Golgfag s ogres and wounding Bronzino, though he was able to make his “look out sir” saves and pass the wounds to his cannon.

Golgfag was the first to charge, getting a mighty 11 inches rolled (though only rolling 1 impact hit) to crash into the saurus block on the brewery flank. Al Muktar led his whooping Arabyans against the ripperdactyls and Bronzino charge the skinks, ducking his head against the storm of poison javelins they hurled at him to emerge unscathed! Magic was very important this round, as the mercenary wizard was able to cast net of Amyntok on the saurus warriors with the skink chief. The ogres crushed many saurus warriors, but could break their steadfast ranks, while the desert dogs chased the ripperdactyls after a great combat round, but couldn’t catch them. Bronzino cut and slashed all around him, but despite slaying several skinks, couldn’t get them to flee their forest position. The lizardmen lines tried to regain ground where they could- but the temple guard failed a charge, and lost a few to pirate pistols, while the saurus under the net could not break free, and lost a handful on their struggles against the magic. Once again, the shooting proved deadly, with a salamander blasting away a dozen pikemen and the marksmen of miragliano losing several men to javelins.

I'm very much enjoying the report and photos so far.
Also thanks for linking your clubs custom Dogs of War rules. I'm going to shift over to using your Voland Venators rules/points.
I'll have to read through it properly at some stage but it's awesome how on that link you can easily scroll through things with selections on the right hand side.
Your dogs of war army looks great!

Fully agree the photos are really well taken and the armies look superb. Looking forward to the conclusion. I’d love to see some of the units in greater detail.

Thanks for the kind words guys!! It’s been a few weeks since this game, and I didn’t take notes this time, so I’ll try to wrap up to the best of my abilities. The armies met in the center first- the temple guard charged the slayer pirates, rushing through a hailstorm of gunfire. Long Drong challenged the scar veteran carrying the banner, hungry for glory or an honorable death. The stench of the slayers proved to their advantage and only a handful were slain, while their brethren recklessly fought on. On the brewery side, the skinks and salamander raced up to point blank range of the Miragliano crossbowmen, and unleashed a firestorm upon them. When the smoke cleared, only Maximilian was left of his crack shot troops. The mercenaries realized that this was the moment for action, and the general led Leopoldo’s pikemen into the fray, charging the other saurus block. Seeking revenge and knowing he could never outshoot the skinks alone, Maximilian charged into the creek they were hiding in, ducking a dozen javelins as he did so. The light wizard used her limited magic (only 4 dice) to cast a shield of Phas Protection on all her nearby allies. The larger cannon by the brewery targeted the salamander that just melted ten men and blew it away with a perfect shot while the galloper gun blasted a hole in the bastilidons shell, though it still lived. Combat was indecisive. While Maximilian successfully routed the skinks by bashing them with his crossbow, the main combat blocks were unable to do much damage. The mercenaries were too hard to hit, but the saurus were just too tough. The ogres were able to break their opponents, but were too far away to help their human and dwarf allies. The final turn sealed victory for the lizardmen. The bastilidon charge between the melees on either side right at my vulnerable wizard, who fled at the site of the stampeding beast. Sadly, during the magic phase, the beast charged up the crystal laser on its back and disintegrated the poor wizard with its weakest beam. The albino skink leading the lizardmen also cast a comet of Cassandora targeting the cannon crew defending the brewery, an ill portent for the artillerists. Combat started to turn in favor of the lizardmen. The mercenaries were still protected by residual magic, but the leopard company couldn’t match the ferocity of saurus warriors, and long Drong was finally cut down by the scar-vet bsb. The final mercenary turn had too many units out of place to support the beleaguered center line, and a series of tragedies sealed their fate. The comet came down, crushing the cannon. And the last of the dwarves were slain, while the pikemen broke and ran after Phas protection expired. The beasts and brewery belonged to the lizardmen!!

Great report and even though it wasn't to your benefit it was nice to read about the Bastiladon zapping something.
Maximillian was heroic in avenging his unit.
Dogs of War are one of my favourite armies so it's great to read about them in action.

Yep who doesn’t like the dogs of war, the units just look so good. Great conclusion to the battle and good to see the bastildon paying off as it’s one of my favourite units from the army.

Thanks for putting this up! Given me a kick to get through some more of my DoW.
Cheers for putting your rules up. I'm currently looking for rules that I like. I am intending to play test the 8th ed warhammer project rules but they seem a bit vanilla and they've largely nuked pikes by taking away the ASF rules.
For your non-RoR units, have you created lore for them? That's been one of the turn ons for me for DoW and I'm only taking units that I can write the fluff for.

Hi Greg, glad you like them!! I specifically tried to avoid defining the generic dogs of war units with backgrounds, as I felt they should be rules to represent all kinds of mercenaries, not just those hailing from Tilea. Light cavalry could be Arabyan nomads, or escaped naggarothi slaves, or anything in between. If you are referring to some of the more obscure RoR that I listed, some of them are from older GW publications, like the citadel journal, and they all had detailed fluff and backgrounds written out before I updated their rules. None of the regiments of renown in this list were original creations, I’m saving those for a separate supplement.
