Hi all,
Inspired by conversations going on in other sub forums, it's time to bring real conversations to the Karaz Ankor. So to get it started, who is your favorite named character, and who do you field the most?
For me, it's an easy one: Belegar Ironhammer. While I've used Grim many times, I find Belegar to be the one that pays for himself.
I own, but haven't yet used Thorgrim, Thorek and Ungrim. I've used Thorek as a regular runelord on Anvil, and will be fielding the High King in a game soon hopefully!
What about you?

Ungrim is a far more viable choice than the others imo. He packs survivability with a heavy punch.
Thorgrim would be awesome IF his attacks modified armour. This is a big issue for him especially at his point cost.
I don't really rate Thorek, you can build better Runelords yourself

Josef Bugman’s the only named character from any army I have, so I pick him

How could i forget Bugman?!
He looks like a decent option although I have never used him since he and his rangers remain in my unpainted pile

I don't get Belegar. He's a pure combat character, focused on challenges, yet is only S4. He adds nothing to your army, and you can get a much better challenge character for cheaper. Thorek is poor, and Thorgrim while having useful buffs is very expensive for a character with such mediocre damage output.
Ungrim and Joseph Bugman strike me as decent, but Grimm Burlocksson is the strongest. While he initially seems to favour a certain playstyle (the gunline, which is a very strong one, but not always fun to play with), he works best in a unit of Irondrakes who can actually stay relatively mobile. He's also got a strong ranged attack, and puts out some solid damage in combat. His points cost is reasonable too.

Are we talking favourite from a fluff perspective or favourite to use or most effective? In terms of most effective, sedge nailed it. In terms of playing, Ungrim wins for me. I just love fielding him in a big unit of slayers. I’ve covered why I love him in an earlier post. Grimm is a very close second. I’d say Bugman next but it’s rare I actually field him, mainly because I rarely take special characters anyway. I’d love to field Thorgrim and Belegar but the low Str attacks really puts me off (though it’s probably the cost of Thorgrim more than anything as I wouldn’t really be taking him for his damage output but his buffs).

I'm going to say "The White Dwarf"
He's quite the mogul with magazines etc. He's also the only one who still receives now models on a regular basis.
He's my favourite and has the best model, the one with the pipe.

When were Grombrindal's last WFB rules released? Was it with that model with Bugman/Gotrek holding him on a shield (white dwarf #348 apparently, 7th edition)?

I guess so but I don't consider the dwarven triumvirate to be the same as Grombrindal himself. I do think that was the most recent though and the Triumvirate cost 1500 points. Grombrindal alone cost 500 and was in White Dwarf 300. These rules (or something very close to it) also remained on the Games Workshop for years and while I have issue 300 I printed the website rules for reference. The rules were still up post the Triumvirate rules coming out so I guess could be considered the most recent. The model was him chuffing on a pipe and pointing at his next victim. My favourite of all the White Dwarf models release and pure Warhammer Fantasy.

Hi guys! I've recently joined the forum, partecipating mostly in TK discussions, but given that I play also dawi, maybe i can contribute also here. LORDS If I look at Lords, well, Thorgrim is far from bad. Solid chance to give hatred to the whole army, 4++ and 2++ against the real nasty attacks. He is costly, no doubt about it, but in high points games he's probably my fav. named Lord. Belegar. He would be my 2nd hero choice. but i don't now… if i need a melee character, at that point i tend to build my own generic lord HEROES. Burloksson!!! Engineers buff warmachines, Grimm buffs friendly units! with a 2+! My irondrakes love him. of course, also Bugman is good

I see Belegar as being designed not as a challenge character but to womp on the numerous skaven and night goblins he has to face in the lore. He's quick iirc so gets to at least splat and sneaky skulker or assassin trying to jump him at the same time. He's a rank and file killer more than a character one and the S4 is imo deliberately chosen to go vs t3 skaven and goblins. Model is pretty cool but my paintjob wasn't great unfortunately.

Grimm for me is the best named character.
I do play Belegar, but as a unit mulcher.
