It’s been quite a few years since I’ve done any painting. I’ve got several half painted models that I never finished and many times more still in spruce. In terms of paint, are there any cheaper alternatives to citadel? I always used them in the past, and have not problem doing so, but they do get pricy. I found this handy chart, but I’ve never used any of these alternative paints. www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_ChartHas anyone had any luck with these? Brands to avoid? Recommendations? In terms of assembly, I’ve dabbled in pinning and filling gaps with green stuff, but in regards to adhesive, is super glue still the over all best option? I used to use plastic cement on model cars when I was first getting into models, but I always used super glue for GW models. Is cement better for plastic and super glue for metal? Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Personally but probably controversially I like the Army Painter and Vellejo ranges

If you want to make your paint last longer make a little wet palette in a Tupperware box. Wet Some kitchen roll and put some baking paper on top then add and mix your colours in there. Keep it in the fridge when not used and it rarely dries up.
I personally just use citadel partly out of laziness and familiarity.
Regarding glue I prefer locktite super glue, nothing fancy. If it is a troublesome joint you can add a pin, a little green stuff around the pin then slather it in super glue.
Other than that it's really just filling holes

Plastic glue 'melts' the plastic together a bit so can create a stronger join but means if you want to undo the join it's messier.
I mostly use GW paints but also have some random Vallejo and Privateer Press paints which seem pretty similar in quality/effect to me.
I used to get bulk packs of cheapo superglue but there is definitely a difference in glue quality and I've had better results/stronger bonds for heavier parts with more expensive superglue brands.
I use greenstuff for big joins.

By and large, paint is paint. Hobby paints like GW, Reaper, and Vallejo are easier to use, but some painters get spectacular results with craft grade paints like Apple Barrel and such. The ultimate trick is to thin them appropriately when using them.
Washes, glazes, and the like are easily made. Roughly 1/2 matte acrylic medium, 1/2 distilled water (to avoid any chlorine or other such stuff in tap water which may affect the color), a dash of flow-aid, and add art ink until you reach the color saturation and mix you desire. Artist ink is around $8 bucks a jar... but that'll make dozens if not hundreds of 'jars' of glazes and washes.

I personally use the Citadel paints, but I've been building my collection for over a decade. I only have to replace one or two every now and then. I don't really think that brand X is better than brand Y, just choices in shades of color, etc.
The one thing I REALLY wouldn't skimp on though, is the primer spray cans. I use Army Painter because primer is merely the coating underneath everything BUT these primers spray a much finer spray which won't clog up the details on your models. I would investigate proper distance and angle to hold your spray so that you achieve best results.
I do as others here have already stated when gluing and using green stuff. I typically go get my super glue from Hobby Lobby and used a medium strength.

I use mostly citadel paints aswell but do have a few other brands for colors I liked but citadel doesnt produce, before making any decision i would see what is available to you locally since local is easier to resupply imo, citadel paint is cheaper then vallejo where I am, and the same price as army painter, i would recommend scale 75 metallics if you can find them, I quite enjoy them, army painter takes a little more practice to use I think since it seems to be a gel medium and you need to make sure they are shaken a lot, and I mean a lot lol just my 2 cents

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Green Stuff World's paint range as well. I've bought their two sets of transition color paints, which are super fun to use, but need the right purpose on your models (like special or magic armor) as well as their bronze/gold metallics set. I use their metallics ALL THE TIME. They layer up amazingly well, coat great, and don't require much expenditure (so they last a long time). Best gold look I've ever used.

Thanks for reminding me, guys.
Metallic paints are an exception to the general 'paint is paint' rule. I've never found a craft metallic that is anywhere close to adequate. You can get by with craft grade color paints, but invest in hobby grade metallics. They are worth it.

I mostly use Reaper paints which I like just fine. I use citadel as well. Would be interested in Vallejo. DakkaDakka had a PSA a bit ago about paints and their effect on those who lick their brushes. TheTL;DR was that Vallejo had some compounds that are known to cause cancers in their older range, and that Citadel has always been fairly brush lick friendly. If you don’t lick your brush it should not affect you but I can post a link if anyone is interested in the full thread.

I used to lick my brushes but since I upgraded my brushes to W&N series 7s they don't really require it and hold their point brilliantly. On this note for painting advice as a whole I would firmly recommend a size 1 W&N series 7 and any half decent brush for applying base coats.

There are a lot of fantastic paint ranges today most of them as good or better then citadel and where I live all of them cheaper. Wet pallet by red grass game is awesome I have both the large and small one. Would only buy the large one if I did it today if need to choose. Metallic paints I can’t talk enough of how I love Vallejo Metal Color(not metal air those are old series that are also good but the new series is even better) for boltgun/silvers. Large pots so pretty expensive. Don’t like the color of their golden but the quality is still awesome. If I would start over today I would probably try out creature caster pro acryl. Large great pots, good price and great reviews. My current setup is almost full set of Vallejo, full set of scale 75(not tried enough yet), full set of war colors , and a lot of technical paints from citadel that I have not had the urge to find an equivalent yet. Full set of Kimera colors and some army painter paints. And also some golden heavy body acrylics and a lot of inks. I love trying out new paints
