Battle Report: 4000 vs 4000 (Special Scenario) Ogre Kingdoms versus Legion of NurgleGame played on 9/8 Will versus Jason avatarofbugman = Ogres 'dat smash 'n scrap wilsonthenarc = Nurgle Blurgle VonGurgle Starting thread... will add pictures today... I shall pop in this week and give a few paragraphs for each picture. My hope is to give some narrative each day this week, x5 days, for the work week during my lunch. Scenario was "Chance Encounter" aka "Surprise Meeting" (Jason, correct me on the exact name... fog of war) 6 turns, it felt super close all game. Spoiler alert: Ogres won 1995 to 1175 or something like that. It was a 100% FUNSIES game, but we both played hard to win. When ya play 8000 points in the foggy swamp... over 6 hours... you're both winners. More to come. Placeholder.

So here we have Big Poppa Nurgle himself. He appeared on turn 2 reinforcements, aka reserves. This guy had a few roles to fulfill. [Role 1] Keep his nice LD9 bubble near my core elements that need it. He was, in fact, the general and just about the highest leadership that a Demon Army can get. The things that needed it were, namely, the Trolls (LD4) and the Hounds (flee, rally, repeat, etc). [Role 2] Use the Lore of Death to snipe small chaff and to add a second offensive caster to the magic phase… and to hopefully use the Lore of Death attribute to sneak a free spell of two into the phase. Due to cutting points to make it all fit in under 4000, he was only a level 1. He took Spirit Leech. I could write 1000 words on why I love this spell in playing small ball magic phases. I won’t right now – but I could. [Role 3] Be a competent fighting unit that can pick his battles. Meaning, he isn’t going to house a full block of Ogres in a fight, but… he could smash some infantry with thunder stomp. He can tie up a mid-sized enemy unit. He can bring the noise with a flank charge. Decent stats, decent survivability. He certainly would not be front line getting into fights that he couldn’t win. He certainly wasn’t aiming to fail charges. ** That’s how I drew it up. ** Here’s what actually happened. Turn 2. My Magic phase. Jason (my opponent) had not yet brought out any Spell Slingers. None on the table, the avenue was open to get a small spell-based advantage. I went with a small test with a 2-dice Lore of Nurgle Hex spell with my level 3, got it… then moved on a 3-dice version of “Spirit Leech”. I targeted a lone Kitty Kat (SabreTusk). I roll my dice… 6, 6, 5. Oooowwwweeeee. I guess it was successful. I cast it, I kill the cat – dead. Miscast. Roll a 2D6 and get a 4. 50/50 shot to lose my general. I rolled a 3. Poof. Homeboy decided it was cooler to skip this brawl and hang out in the Garden of Nurgle sipping a brew or three. 375 points kablowy. See ya. The cat death had a mild effect on some small skirmish level combats. It perhaps had a small effect on the use of a unit of Lead Belchers on turns 3 and 4. Overall, I think I traded 375 points for 21 points. Bad trade. ** Long term effect. No general. No LD9 bubble. The Chaos Trolls failed about 10 stupidity checks in a row and eventually lurched forward into a stone head [terrain] and then picked their noses. That’s 152 points that was “Nullified”. They didn’t die, but they never got to fight.

Not too much to say here, this was a unit of 60 Plague Bearers. It looks cool. I used a 100mm x 100mm unit filler of a giant Plague Cauldron. You can see it in the middle. It’s a cauldron filled with tentacles and bits and so on, reaching out. Lots of green goo and bubbles. The cauldron is on wheels and being towed by two Orc Plague Bearers. Part of my army theme (yeah, “fluff”) is to add a few Plague Bearers of all the different races in the Old World. Hence, the 2 Orc type dudes with rotting and diseased flesh that tow said giant cauldron on wheels. It looks really slow and ponderous. Speaking of slow and ponderous --- this here bus of 60 Plague Bearers was just that. All game. So slow. They did a lot to force some mid-sized ogres units from a whole corner and side of the table, so that was good and impacted the game. Positional, even if not killy. See, they had the BSB with them and were supposed to be within range of a LD9 general (Great Unclean One). But, they step down to LD8 and even with re-rolls, they got positionally march blocked for 3 of 4 meaningful turns, and then went on to fail 2 of those 3 turns. Once, they failed with the dreaded 12-12. Even with re-rolls! They sucked at charging. They rolled a 4 on 2D6 and then another 4 on 2D6 (I think they only needed a 6 on the second attempt). Uhg. So sloppy, so diseased, so foul… so slow. But, I count Nurgle’s Blessings here. First, I rolled a 12-12 but it didn’t lead to an 800+ point unit evaporating. Secondly, they did impact the game just be being there. Most things wanted to avoid 30+ poisoned attacks that Wound with a TO HIT roll of 5+. See, I had a Herald in this unit with that Locus. 5+ poison is strong, and against a High Toughness low armor save unit like Ogre Bulls… it could have been a slaughter. This gets me thinking… is there a way to get Plague Bearers HATRED? If so, a horde of Plague Bearers, with that aforementioned Herald swings with 5+ Poison on the TO HIT roll. Hatred, obv, gives re-rolls. So, 1/3 of your attacks auto wound, then you re-roll some number again with a 1/3 chance to auto wound. This is spicy tech if you want a Hammer Anvil. Y’know? Thirdly, this unit was useful in that they did not die. They took some scrap launcher hits. They took some other random and small and miscellaneous damage… i.e. whittling down, but they ended the game with 45ish dudes still standing. They lived, and therefore didn’t give up victory points. TL;DR. An 800-point weapon that never got truly unsheathed. But it looked cool.

What I will draw your attention to here is, Trolls. Top of picture, center, slightly off center to the left. 4 trolls. If the Plague Bearers did “Little” in this game… the Trolls did “Nothing”. No general, but yes within range of BSB but still 10 of 10 stupidity checks. Re-rolls versus LD4 are rough. Eventually stumbled forward into a rock thing and then got stuck there. And they didn’t even look that cool doing it.

This scenario ended up allowing a lot of different units to enter the battlefield via a lot of different table edges. To wit, these Plague Drones. They effectively got a very good bit of placement against two different Ogre units. They threatened sides/flanks of both, while at the same time I had a frontal option for combined. As we all know, Ogre units are big and chunky. They smartly maneuvered to pin the Plague Drones in and down. This picture shows that. I would put a thought balloon in here, for the Plague Drones saying “Ehrmegerd, we’re in trouble” as they face down about 50 wounds worth of Ogre beef. Incoming! The flying bug dudes were however able to charge out of their pen and get after the single remaining Mournfang Calvary fellow. Escape.

Fast Forward just a bit… the Plague Drones have maneuvered out of their Ogre charge lines and have landed a charge on the single remaining Mournfang Calvary dude. Along for the ride is a Demon Prince (DP). He’s the Slicey/Dicey DP. Sword of Striking, so 5A with 2+ to hit on most things, and S6 wounds most thing on a 2+ or 3+. He’s a good strike force. Plus, he Thunder Stomps, which is usually good for 3 or 4 more wounds versus infantry… but against Ogres he can beat up on Gnoblars I guess? So, there we are. This combat is happening on the bottom of the last turn. My hope was that these dudes would fight, and I would win and I could pursue into fresh combat. Not pictured, but dead ahead of this combat was my Exalted Champion of Nurgle fighting a Giant. The twist, this Exalted Champion was fighting with a Great Weapon, so I actually went after the Giant in turn order and I was very worried about the random attacks. I told Jason (aka Mr. Ogre) that “My plan is to have my DP cause no wounds, my Drones whiff, my bug whiff, and then your mournfang to do no more than 1 wound… so you’ll have to make a break check... and fail… and allow me to chase into the giant, and kill it.” Everything in that statement happened. My Slicey/Dicey DP hit with 3 of 5, and wounded with 2 of 3. The Ogres had BubbleGuts up as a buff spell for a lot of things. The Mournfang made both ward saves. Plague Drones attacked, nuthin… Bugs attacked… nuthin… The Mournfang did a wound. Combat was tied, his 1W to my Standard on the Drones. I also had a Musician in the Drones, so I won combat by 1. The Mournfang was out of range of both the General and the BSB. He failed. My 2 units got to pursue, they beat the Ogre roll and wiped out the unit (1 guy with 2 wounds marked on him) and got to run right into a Sabretusk and a Giant. For the record, once we moved miniatures and drew some lines… the DP had to hit the Sabretusk and not the Giant. The Exalted Champion of Nurgle ended up doing 1 last wound to the Giant. Timber… down he goes. Fallen giant. Two very kooky combats to finish the game.

Not much to see here. A big unit of Ogres that my Plague Bearer bus failed to charge. The Ogres then smashed into Hounds and killed them… then smashed into another set of Hounds and smashed them too. My general (Great Unclean One) was POOF, gone, so the Hounds diminished in value since I couldn’t hae the Hounds flee and regroup. At least not reliably. They were 30-point speed bumps for some hungry hungry Ogres. Woof woof.

All of my Big Monstaaars died. But Demons never really die, they just go to Nurgle’s Garden and get wasted. The Great Unclean One was the first to snuff it, via Miscast. He was renamed the Great UnCream One since he’s slugging a Genesee Cream Ale. If you’re from Rochester, you’ll know. The Cygor suffered a wound here (from a misfire, I think) then a wound from something else (opposing spell maybe?)… he was on 3 of 5 wounds left and he got into combat versus a Sabretusk and a unit of Mournfang. They killed him dead in 1 round. Kind of surprised me, but he was the wrong guy in the wrong place at that time. Cygor inst good at fighting other monsters. The SoulGrinder got into a nice “Monster Mash” battle versus the Giant. But, random attacks give and random attacks taketh away. After 3 or 4 rounds of combat, my CLAW never killed said Giant. He rolled “Club” and in this case, the Giant did 2D6 wounds. With a “Thump with Club” result or something like that. A roll of 9 was bad and I didn’t make enough ward saves to stay alive. Death! Club thump don’t care about no -1 to hit modifier.
