I havea toal mix of exciterment and caution. Excitement because for the first time, we have official confirmation that the story of the Old World will continue in one way or another. That's exciting! It has surived through Total War and Vermintide and this very forum and GW has seen it and the potential.
But I'm also a bit cautious about that excitement because I find AOS very bad rule and lore-wise. So if they attempt to bring rank-and-file into the AOS rule,s i'll be disappointed. We'll see. We've got 3 years to wait and speculate!

We have no information about the rules, so yes - there is the possibility that it's inferior to 8th (though I think we all accept that 8th does have some room for refinement - or expansion), which would be bad for those of us that stick with 8th as I'd expect most to migrate to the supported ruleset. However, it assures us we'll have WFB models of some sort available in the future - potentially old kits coming back, and I cannot see any way they'd be doing this without new models.
For me, it's a massive boost to motivation. It's hard to keep yourself going slogging away at collecting, building and painting massive armies for an unsupported game when in 5 years time your regular opponents may have given up and you might never play again. Knowing that WFB in some form will come back gives me the assurance that it's worth while continuing.
Interesting thought - will it be set in the same era? Or will they use the chance to explore earlier timelines - the Elven civil war for example?

I'll hold off my excitement until I see a new Bretonnian AB.

If they *did* release new rules and they were terrible I would just continue playing 8th instead. Any new models/support are welcome though. My ideal situation would be a slightly corrected 8th coming out as a specialist game, followed up with army books for the missing factions. You can dream.. Yes, but it would eat into the 8th edition community. There is a good chance that we would lose a significant portion of our community on this site for instance. Even if you hated it, some people will like it because it would be GW supported game. Just a further fracturing of the community. Now if it turned out to be awesome, that is would be fantastic, but I've had my heart broken too many times by GW. I don't think it'll hurt the community that much, especially if the bases are the same.

this reminds of the old adage: "if you wish to wound someone who has lost everything, give him back something broken" cautiously pessimistic they'll do something to make me angry all over again There's only one way to hurt a man who's lost everything. Give him back something broken.... what can I add?

I mean even if I do play the new edition of whatever it turns out to be.. I still anticipate frequenting this place since I am still interested in the Old World setting and I still enjoy having a complete set of everything 8th. It will be interesting to see which way the rules go. Will it be an evolution of 8th? A down-scaling back to 4th edition sized armies to aid entry? A dumbing down a la AoS? Or something completely different?

Anyway, something happened. In the worst scenario we will have more than we have now ...it seems. squared bases and maybe old models will be back. Regarding new rules...uhmmm I am almost sure I will be disappointed.

Regarding new rules...uhmmm I am almost sure I will be disappointed. I would be highly surprised if the new WFB came back unchanged. However, I think this is being handled by the specialist games team (not confirmed yet) and when they've revived other games recently such as Necromunda and Blood Bowl they have been mostly faithful to the prior ruleset. I would be less confident if it were the main GW team responsible for AoS/current 40k rules who were behind this.

They've promised us updates on the way - so we'll learn more in the interim.

I think they finally woke up to the fact that people are spending large sums of money on the secondary market for OOP armies and books. Very little of that money is flowing back to GW they way it did when editions changed. In fact a lot of it is flowing to other games.
All in all, I am intrigued but as they said it is years off. I shall wait and see, but I pretty much lost any faith in GW when End Tines came out.

VINDICATED.
I guess that four years worth of sales data of Old World IP Based AAA computer games, the success of successor companies such as KoW and 9th age and the huge amounts of players from previous editions lying fallow must have finally percolated in the lizard hindbrain of GW corporate.
Never would I have thought to see this day, Let us rejoice!

It's worth noting the way GW have been handling the LoTR/Hobbit stock recently. They don't have the capacity (or don't think it worth it) to offer their full range at once, so are cycling through it. When there's a focus on a particular area (e.g. Rohan, through a campaign book) they ensure all the related models are in their range at that time.
I don't see every WFB race's kits being stocked at the same time, but they could handle it the same way - e.g. release a Karak Eight Peaks campaign book, and have the full Night Goblin/Skaven/Dwarf ranges in stock them.
