A bit of a weird one... Is there a rule that prevents you firing war machines/casting a spell (templates essentially) that have the potential to land on friendlies or in combat?
For example, an enemy monster = x Friendly units = F
F F F x F F
None of the friendly units are in combat, the monster is amongst them ready to charge. Can war machine target it, with a likely scatter/bounce landing on friendlies? What if one of the friendly nearby was also in combat with another enemy? Similar with a vortex or pit of shade, for example.

BRB p. 39: "Some war machine weapons, particularly those that use templates, can accidentally hit friends whilst aiming at the enemy. The key word here is 'accidentally' — you cannot purposefully aim a template so that some of your models will be hit."
The same applies to troops in CC.

To add: there is a difference between vortices and direct damage spells (pit of shades). Vortices as such do not have a target, DD spells do.
Hence (Official Update Version 1.9, p.7):
Q: Do ranged direct damage spells that use a template have to target an enemy unit? (p31) A: Yes, the template must be placed over the target enemy unit.
Q: Can direct damage spells be used in such a way that they affect friendly models? (p31) A: No. A direct damage spell can’t be used in a way that deliberately affects a friendly model (though they may end up scattering onto a friendly model and affecting it in that way).
Q: Can magical vortex spells be used in such a way that they affect friendly models? (p31) A: Yes.
Note however: Q: Can models choose to voluntarily move into/through a magical vortex? (p31) A: No.
