Thanks very much chronicallychaotic66 ! I am very proud of that skeleton unit, even though it is an absolute tragedy to rank up. I basically have some repair work to do each time I take them out for a game.
And yes, you are correct. That is indeed Lord Falk or The Dark Knight as his entry in the roster from the 5th ed book says. Had some crazy rules back then, essentially red fury but with a multiple-wound weapon! I am lucky to have all of the characters from the Circle of Blood era, so expect to see them done at some point (some maybe sooner than others...).

Good bit of threadomancy here (fitting!) 💀💀💀
Really like the new wight, great job... But more importantly, I've absolutely loved going back and reading through this blog, so interesting to follow along as you've built the army, and I've enjoyed all the pictures.
Great blog 👍

Great model and paint job Tubis!
I can see why your army won the painting competition. That skeleton horde is wonderfully atmospheric.

good to have you back, Tubis.
I can relate to the photography issues, feel exactly the same way. so...I am not going to ask for an army shot. Wight Lord looks great. You really make these models shine.

I don't love that Wight King model but I do love the way you've painted it, particularly the way you've managed to get the blues, greens and deep pinks to all fit together.

sonofkurnos Threadromancy it is! I'm happy you've enjoyed my ramblings. markdienekesThanks a lot! They definietly look more convincing as a horde, than as individual models, when it comes to quality. NaitsabesThanks Naitsabes - it's good to be back! I won't promise army shots, casue then I'll probably jinx it. Let's just see what happens. sedgeThank you very much! The colour choices are a bit of a gamble, not sure how well they work together really - happy you like them though. The wight king has some charm I think. A bit of a "we get there when we get there" vibe going on.

Mallo - cheers mate! hivefleetmanticore - glad you are enjoying them. These old goofy sculpts make me chuckle too. Anyhoo, uncharacteristically true to my word I did manage to take some photos of the stuff I did a while ago. This fellow was completed over a year ago if memory serves me right: The Varghulf is the only finecast model that I own and one which I bought fairly recently. Pretty happy with the white skin but I think he is missing something. I was going to add some blood splatter with blood for the blood god and black ink, but I chickened out fearing that I'll ruin him. If I ever work the courage to grime him up, I'll let you know. He has been an absolute star player in most of my games so far. Next up was this foot BSB: He was a tad bit rushed, as I wanted to finish him for a small event I was running. The purple was a struggle as far as I remember. The freehand is based on the emblem of Heinrich Kemmler's faction from the Total War series. I own Kemmler and Krell and I think this wight king can be a good fit for them, since they work best in an infantry heavy list. Plans for another time. Last but not least - the spirit host: A rather simple paintjob using mostly washes and glazes. I've arranged them on a resin fallen statue from alien lab miniatures, to add a bit of height. This way you can see each ghost more clearly (extra spooky no doubt). There is one other large unit which I've completed this year, so stay tuned (I know I am dragging this out a bit but bear with me please).

Cheers grandmasterwang. Yes, the Varghulf is a cool model. My finecast version was really decent too. Meanwhile, something fresh from the painting table - the Red Duke himself. A bit of a struggle to complete but I'm happy with the results. It was suggested that his face looks like he's heavily hungover. He does spend every night going out drinking, so I suppose it's fitting. Hope you like him! He doesn't really fit the barrow kings theme and I do not really consider him being part of this army. Hence the catalogue classic red armour. I do ocassionally need a vampire lord for tournament play and I always had a soft spot for this model. I have a more suitable vampire lord counts-as in the lead pile somwhere. Until I get to him, the Red Duke rides again Ps. I dug out a picture I took before I stripped him. Behold this circa 2000 extrodinare teenage paintjob!

Red duke looks great.
I'll return to this thread for inspiration when I eventually get round to painting mine.

Time for another update. I've recently decided it was time to tackle another large infantry unit - zombies. Now, zombies are a bit off lore-wise for barrow kings, as they seem slightly too erm "fresh" to be hanging out with the ancient wight-like types. Surely all the fleshy bits should have rotten away after centuries of entombment and they would turn into plain old skeletons. Unfortunately, zombies are very useful competitively, and since I've been hitting the local 8th ed tournament ring lately, I fancied a unit or two for summoning shanenigans. So I pushed on regardless. Maybe I’m overthinking it. Perhaps the zombies are local farmers and assorted empire soldiery, slain by my undead horde and raised again by the liches? I hope the liches don't mind. First up I had to face the dreadful stripping process again. Scrubbing over 20-year old paint from tenths of poorly assembled plastic models, I questioned my sanity over and over again. Why? Why do I persist? Why didn't I just go out and buy new ones? I don’t even like these old goofy zombies!!! I'm afraid I have no answers. I hope at least I get some positive mother-nature karma points for my obsessive plastic recycling process. Or not, I did go through A LOT of stripping agent to get this done. Anyways, here's a picture showing the outcome of a couple scrubbing sessions: You'll notice some AOS undead ogre types in the mix. These will come in handy later for unit fillers. I figured I will go "small" and try and pump out around 40 models. I rarely find myself summoning more in games of 8th, with my casters focused more on throwing around augments or curse of years (such a great spell for disrupting the enemy magic phase). I started out by planning the aforementioned unit fillers. I wanted to do some dead trees again to match the ones in my skeleton horde, but I decided not to do a massive centrepiece tree for now. I’ve discovered that the really large unit fillers are a bit cumbersome to set up and take out of a unit. And zombies really need to rank up well, as taking them off the table and putting them back on is basically their entire existence. I’ve made 5 fillers in total: The trees were made out of milliput (the one behind the ogre is hollow inside, sculpted around a wire frame). There is a lot of little resin pieces and wood elf bits scattered among the bases, tied together with my usual ground cover mix (wood filler+dried moss, sand etc.). The hangman and his victim was a little conversion I did when I was a teenager, I was pretty proud of it back then! I tidied it up a bit and mounted them on a joined base, as they were separate before. I've painstakingly rebuilt the zombies, using some spare empire pieces from my bitsbox and undercoated the models and their bases separately. Here’s how they looked after spraying: To be contiuned....
