29Jan2017 Finally, finally finished the Scarlet Curs. Overall happy with the unit, making it a bit rustic with free company parts worked out. I even green stuffed boots on some of them. The decals worked out too, although I am struggling a bit with taking the sheen off. The banner as usual is not quite as awesome as it was in my head but, it’ll do. The Scarlet Curs hail from the city of Wolfenburg. They are known for their ruffian demeanor and the Wolfenburg city guard tends to not interfere when there is a brawl in the taverns around the Curs’ barracks. At the same time they are known for getting the job done. Be it protecting an outpost along the Salzenroad from a petty bandit king or hunting down beastmen deep in the forests or dealing with a spider goblin infestation in the Scarred Hills. Here are a few close-ups (plastics of all ages present, the Curs are not picky) Why a baby-griff? I’ll spare you the long story, let’s just say the proud Screaming Griffons out of Schonfeld are still looking for their regimental mascot. When Wolfenburg is called upon to send their finest, the Scarlet Curs are ready. And so it was at Volganof where the Scarlet Curs fought their way through the Marauder vanguard and reached the city proper only days before the fateful assault. Oleg von Raukov assigned them as a bodyguard for his brother Vassili and so the Scarlet Curs stayed out of the fray initially. However, after Vassili left to check on the supply levels in the keep, they pushed their way to the front line. Just then Lord Mortkin struck down Oleg with a mighty blow, stunning the defenders of Volganof. The Scarlet Curs were the first to recover and rushed in. Some say Lord Mortkin awaited them with arms stretched wide while others claim he was mutilating Oleg’s body, all agree it was the Scarlet Curs who ended Mortkin and his reign of terror. But, the Curs were then inundated by a wave of chaos warriors eager to avenge their fallen lord. The next day Valmir von Raukov himself found the Curs’ regimental colors right next to the body of his favorite son and later personally returned the banner to Wolfenburg. What’s on my table at the moment? Well, I am working my way through the crossbowmen. In the end I decided to go with the modern weapons after seeing this picture (it may also have to do with the fact that I already have a unit with the classic x-bows). …and I thought Warhammer weapons were oversized. These guys are a real treat to paint. Upward and onward, I’ve broken into the 800s. The official Volganof counter: 802/969

Great update. I think the Scarlet Curs unit looks great. Especially the Ogre 😀

Transfers are tough. I learned a lot about them when I got into painting Flames of War stuff. Gloss varnish first, then decal, and matte varnish over top worked for me when getting rid of that "decal look".

hmm are there brush-on matte varnishes? I've been hitting these guys pretty hard with the standard spray matte already not keen on more of that.

25Feb2017 Update time. A little unit of Crossbowmen has joined the Nordland contingent at Volganof. Quite charming models from what I consider the Golden Age of Empire miniatures. For once I am quite happy with the banner. It’s a simple paper print-out of the ‘official’ Nordland banner and then colored in while staying between the lines. My proudest moment was boldly painting over the ship in the center and adding a cross that ended up not terribly crooked …and then doing it again on the reverse. Also, check out the hair on the standard bearer. They don’t sculpt curls like that anymore nowadays. The musician (and maybe the guy on the right) is from a later DoW unit but fits right in with the rest of the unit. It’s all about wearing the right hat. On the side I added to the bad guys. Anybody want to venture a guess what is peeking over the log? The official Volganof counter: 812/969

Lovely, colourful Empire minis and the banner looks great! hmm are there brush-on matte varnishes? I've been hitting these guys pretty hard with the standard spray matte already not keen on more of that. Late reply, but yes, I use one bought from Ral Partha Europe but I'm afraid I can't really recommend it as it tends to turn out 'satin' rather than proper matte.

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. Mr. Bureaucrat, 'satin' won't do...that's pretty much what it looks like now. But, at least I know one brand not to buy now. Also, if you want to know what these chaos heads sit on, head over here: eefl.freeforums.net/thread/297/chaos-all-glory?page=3

What a gloriously bonkers collection, Sir! I wish I could paint that many models in a year with such a quality. Inspired by your Reiksguard horde, I'm tempted to build a huge unit of human knights as well, the problem is if I'm to invest a massive time sink on it, I want only the very best models. The Empire knighs are already 20 year old plastic and frankly, all empire plastics from 6th edition backward are discardable (that's why they are so cheap on ebay). The Perry WotR knights are too slim and small whereas Gamezone ones are slightly too bunky (the General is the most awesome though). Recently Steelfist miniature release their first batch of mounted Renaissance knights, but those models are not that well clear-cut designed as the later GW models. Victrix is one of the few companies that make similar sized model to GW (at least to the older editions) and the quality is almost as good but they are engrossed with ancient range for now. it's so strangely and economically retarded that GW has not created a new models for the most polular unit in the Warhammer Fantasy after all these years. The search for the perfect Renaissance knights continues.
By the way, I'm hugely interested in Hirst art as well. Would love to build me a Guaita tower one day 🤓
P.s your Xbowmen are great, and you can make it greater by having full unit of Marksmen of Miragliano (you already has the musician). They are among the best metal units GW (Perrys) have ever designed.

Ah, yes. Tired old Empire knights, we all love to hate them. Here are my two cents: The riders are actually not bad, just a tad too big. And, it's easy to spiff them up with head swaps, or arms from other kits. So, the main problem is the 25 year old war ponies. Anything you do will cost a pretty penny. You could: - go with the war altar horses (and the general's kit one) but, that becomes a bit same-y. - de-chaosify the chaos knight steeds. but, they are way too big for my taste. Here is a nice example (the whole blog is worth a read): thegatesofkislev.blogspot.com.es/2017/01/mas-caballeria-para-ostermark-more.html- use the gamezone horses. These are great sculpts. The riders I actually find to weedy to stand next to GW chunky guys but the horses fit well. I've shown a little unit early in this log - get the horses from White Knight, that is my long term plan for other knight units after I finish the Reiksguard. I reviewed them here: eefl.freeforums.net/thread/287/alternative-empire-armored-horseRegarding the Marksmen, they are great looking models. But, way out of my price range to go after directly. I buy 'in bulk' so sometimes I end up with a little treasure like that musician. Anyway, keep discarding those older Empire models, that'll keep the prices down for me cheers.

Thanks for alerting me to the Battle at the Gate of Kislev blog. Glad that there're still loony enough people who build massive and very well-painted armies for an historical event that is deader than the Fall of Nineveh, eh! By the way, I'm still not sold on using Chaos steed as Empire horse. I still see loads of Chaos symbols there and the horseys are still slightly too big. The Demi helmet switch is a great execution though. For the time being, I think I will go with these guys, pricey but lots of customisations (for metals, that is). Regards.

23March2017 Alright! I finished Volgar and his Shadowmen. Supposedly they are “the most famous of forest hunters“ and “skilled beyond the ken of their countrymen”. Now, they are deadly…to rabbits and pheasants. Not convinced those S3 bows will do much to chaos warriors. They deploy as an unwieldy scouting unit of twenty. My main goal for them is that they are not a vehicle for some giant unit of baddies to get to the walls of Volganof real fast via pursuit/overrun. Yep, I am not overly ambitious. But, that doom and gloom is just on the gaming side. I quite enjoyed building and painting up the models. It is nice not to worry about ranking up for once. I tried not using a bright spot color, these being stealthy hunters and all. So, they do look earthy. Building the skirmish tray was a bit painful. Balsawood and sheet metal do not really like to bond. A real anachronism in the Age of 3D printing (not to mention Sigmar). Mostly these are GW archers which is a really nice kit. I mixed in some Frostgrave soldiers. They needed GW-sized arms and heads to really fit in although I snuck a couple Frostgrave heads onto the GW bodies as well. Worked out okay I think. Second from left is (slightly blurry) Volgar himself front and back. The cloak was my first try at going beyond ‘single color basecoat with wash’ on fur. Happy with how it came out. The book states: Loud cheers went up from the walls of Volganof when the hunting horns of the Shadowmen were sounded. Well, there must be some desperate people in Volganof. But, of course that meant the unit needed a musician. Really like the pained expression on the face. That guy must have spent too many miserable nights sleeping on the damp forest floor and now rheumatism is catching up with him. On the side I painted up another mounted warrior priest. He is not in the list at the moment but, that may change. I mean, if I put one warrior priest in a unit of 15 knights normally, does that mean there should be three priests in the crazy Volganof-sized Reiksguard units of 45? Anyway, here he is, Lothar the Priest. Unlike his twin brother Luthor he does not blindfold his horse or bring books to battle (or maybe the model was incomplete when I bought it…). It’s a really great sculpt. The hammer could be a bit smaller for my taste but I like the pose. The official Volganof counter: 828/969
