Dear fellow Warhammer (8th ed.) enthusiasts,
I'm assembling some Warriors of Chaos with halberds. Should I give them shields to protect from shooting etc? I think they look better without shields + they will be MoK, so I lean strongly toward unshielded. I'd appreciate your opinions on this!
Cheers!

This discussion comes up a lot relating to GW Dwarves too. In the end, it comes down to how much shooting, magic missiles, and direct damage spells you expect to face, and how powerful it will be. It really depends on your local meta than anything else.
Figure out how many Warriors you will have with and without shields. Estimate the number of casualties you will take from enemy ranged attacks both with and without shields. Whichever calculation leaves you with the most Warriors after wading through the expected enemy fire shows you which way to go.

I think vulcan just about summed it up. It's not easy to estimate, e.g. consider how templates may not get as many hits when you have less guys or certain spell effects. For me aesthetics overruled efficiency calculations...so mine got shields.

I've always played with lists in, or in preparation for, tournements- and these have to be vs. all comers. I've tended to always use unshielded simply because enemy shooting is almost always going after something else in the army that is more immediately threateneing.
If I take shields I prefer this on the Tzeentch warriors with hand weapons to get the full effects of 3+/5+
I also recently noticed that the shields are for some reason 2 points with chosen, so an extra argument to leave them off with these chaps.

Great, thanks! It seems the difference is not that big so I'll run them without. Good to know I'm not overlooking something here.

I go back and forth but do mine mostly with halberds (as I have bunch armed that way!) depends on your meta as others have said.
It's actually a disadvantage against metal magic

I wouldn't bother I consider them a waste of points for an extra +1 save vs shooting.

Something you can do for flexibility. Make the majority the way you prefer aesthetically, but do one rank the other way. If you make the front rank all shielded or all unshielded, most players will accept that as 'good enough' for WYSIWYG.

Good idea. I could probably blue tac the shields on. But I like how they look without shields.

Having a rank's worth of shields painted up and ready to blu-tac on at needed would probably work just as well.
