9th brought back the infernal puppet, my most favorite arcane item in 7th edition. Shame they nerfed just about everything else WoC though

Hey Guys, It’s Lance L. I’m one of the guys helping to run the NYC 9th age group. I wanted to run an idea past the three of you. Overall, since the NYC numbers for either 8th or 9th are pretty small, it could be worthwhile to do a test to see if we can make the two systems semi-compatible to increase numbers. Kevin, would you be interested in doing a game against me where you run an 8th ed. List and I run a 9th age list? In the game we each use our respective system for choosing lists, magic, items, weapon rules etc. Overall, I think it would work better than anticipated and I’m sure there could be a reasonable gentlemen’s agreement for any occasional rule conflict. ---------Lance! Welcome to the forum. Let make sure I understand, are you saying we play a game of WFB 8th edition, but you will use an army list/special rules from a 9th Age army? Is that what you are saying?

Yes, that is correct.

Thanks sounds great! It's like you're using homemade house rules, which I totally support. I think it would be fun to give it a try...

gjnoronh I don't foresee any major issues and I think it could work. It would work better than say using a 7th edition army list in 8th edition as 9th still builds upon 8th's core mechanics. The main problem that I foresee is that the 9th age player would have to inform the 8th edition player about changes to unit entries both before and during the game to prevent confusion. The problem for 9th age players would be contending with the 8th edition magic which is significantly stronger, handling more than 2 monsters (artillery is more expensive in 9th), and if the 8th ed. player brings some of the stronger character-item combos (unkillable disc lord, crown of command in Karl Franz bus). However, if the later was to occur, then you could adjust the point balance to give the 9th age player some more points to compensate for the differences. Again, minor issues and I don't see it as problematic in a casual setting. The upside is bigger as it increases local player pool for rank&flank fantasy gaming. Similarly, @alex- my offer still stands if you want to try a 9th vs. 8th game. ----------I'm sure it will def work out when playing against me. I'm not interested in making super powerful armies or maximizing gross combos (though I don't think there are many of these in 8th ed.) - I like themed, balanced, and underdog armies!

Thanks, I'm looking forward to the crossover match! I'm going to transfer our conversation to pm so we can set-up details. However, for the group at large, once we do play the game, I'll take pictures and do a quick write-up to share my thoughts on how well it worked.

I'm going to be at Brooklyn Game Lab this weekend, working on minis and hopefully demoing a proof-of-concept for a game I'm working on, but if anyone wants to drop in. I don't have my WFB stuff with me proper but am down to meet other EEFLers

I haven't read the rules or played a game of 9th yet, so I don't think I'm ready for a tourney I'm currently catching up on the end times books, I really like the undead legion since my VC list has been missing some core chariot units lol

Lol, every VC or TK player loved the merger since it removed most weaknesses that their respective armies faced (basically, VC now had access to artillery, chariots, and nasty units like the Casket of Souls, Heirotitan, and War Sphinx). From GW's perspective, it helped them sell their new models.

Actually that's one thing I've wondered about: Is it common to use End Times stuff for 8th ed nowadays? Because between that and the Grand Alliance of the Everchosen...

I've used the 50% lord allowance, but not the magic or merged armies, personally. So no united undead or elfs, or that.
