I don't have the stomach to go through all my models. There are boxes and boxes of them across closets all over the house. And under the bed. As far as insurance goes, you'll just have to keep a running list and then (heaven forbid) if something bad ever does happen, you'll just have to look at what current retail is for the items you've lost. I'm unsure about time spent working on them, if that's something billable or not. An insurance agent would be better suited to answer that one. Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. I just didn't know if any of you had gone through all this. One of my best friends (and an Ogre player - most of the Ogres I've painted have gone to live with his clan) is an insurance claims agent (something like that. I usually start dozing when he starts talking insurance cases.). Basically, once it gets past the initial case handlers, it goes to him and he evaluated what whatever they are trying to get money for, is worth (if anything). He keeps telling me that I need to insure my collection. I think that he's a little concerned about it. The scary thing is, according to him, it really depends on who you get as an agent. Luck of the draw. He said that one of his co-workers had a case where a guy had lost the bulk of his army in an accident. The agent that originally took the case awarded him something around $300 after a (very) quick internet search. He happened to see it go across his screen and opened it. Being an Ogre player, he was very familiar with what it was worth. All professionally painted army, worth over $10K! He quickly made a case and corrected it with his superior! Now, that's scary! The only way I can see it really paying off is if you manage to verify AHEAD of time what it's worth. Even then, you'll pay heavily for it being insured. This is why I was wondering if any of you had already done this and how you went about it. - Sorry for derailing the thread. At least it's still in the same vein as the original post.

But I wouldn't have it any other way; the day the models to paint run out IS the day that I die. Good one! As far as paint queue. I won't go into details either. Let's just say 'a closet full'. horace, yours isn't so bad, that's what, ~200 minis? I'd say it's time to hit the evil bay! Some impressive lists I suddenly feel better about life But I wouldn't have it any other way; the day the models to paint run out IS the day that I die. Good one! As far as paint queue. I've managed to stay off eBay pretty much for the last year and a half. Has helped things immensely.

I have had very similar insurance discussions RE: my Magic the Gathering collection. I had mine insured as a special adder line item with a value of about $15K in case of fire or flood or theft. I carried that insurance for about 3 years.
The added cost, however, was high and I decided to sell off most of my higher valued cards. SWAG #s... If my regular Homeowners Insurance was for $500/year, the card collection adder was +$400/year.
I am using the M:tG profits to put a new roof on my house. #Adulting

I kind of expected something similar. Too expensive for my blood. And at that price, you'd have the amount they're insuring you for in just over 3 years. Back on topic, I've started tracking down a list of my stuff, here there and everywhere, but it's looking like I have a good bit more painted than I originally thought. I still have something like 300+ TK Skeletons, 60 Saurus Warriors, etc. left to paint, and pretty much something like that for every army, but I also have a lot done. I'll see what I can come up with.

I feel a lot better about my pile now. I've managed to cut it down pretty significantly the past year, and it was never as bad as what some of you have posted thus far.
I'm basically down to a beginning lizardman army (70-odd skinks, 50-odd sauruses, 10 Temple Guard, 3 Terradons, and conversion material for making a bunch of monsters), converting a Deffkopta into a Gryobomber, and what's actually being painted right now.
That and making movement trays. Lots of movement trays.

Oh, yes, it's definitely good to have material to work on. A couple times when I was really broke I ran out of stuff to work on. It's a real downer wanting to paint and not having anything available TO paint.
But seeing the lists some of these guys have posted... yikes! I'd be afraid to face some of those mountains of grey plastic for fear of an avalanche!

I prefer to look at it this way:
If I EVER feel like painting some lizardmen guess what? I've got some models for that.
If I EVER feel like painting some Empire guess what? I've got some models for that.
If I EVER feel like painting some Germans for my Flames of War guess what?
you get the idea.
I still browse ebay looking for models that I don't have; I like to have complete collections; but I'm getting better at waiting for the deals that I want rather than feeling compelled to buy immediately like I used to.
And honestly I'm fine if I never get around to all of it.

I'm sort of the same way as ryryak, but I'm trying to get to a point where I'll eventually have it all painted. I really want to have fully painted armies by the time my 2-year-olds are capable of playing games with me. I'll also eventually turn them over and let them have them to sell off for whatever need they may have, be that college, a down payment on a house, etc. Thousands of painted models can really generate some good revenue! Besides, it's my hobby and providing me with hours of entertainment in the meantime.
As for my piles and piles of unpainted sprues, that just keeps me motivated and allows me to build pretty much any army list that I could possibly want to play.

Well... surprisingly I think I have one of the smaller lots of unpainted stuff to paint. I have no official record of it all but I'd say its around the size of Horus's list but without all that Chaos Dwarf Big Hat goodness. Possibly the most daunting when I think of it is 18 tomb kings chariots. On the chaos dwarf side I only have 3 death rockets, a unit of 10 of the FW Fireglaive guys and a box of the old plastic warriors to paint......but if I paint those... I'll immediately need to buy some more Chaos Dwarfs to paint... so for now they remain in the queue.

I’ve got a few chaos dwarf models for trade if you’re interested. You can consider me interested. I like the colour scheme. My death rocket was a quick paint job and looks it, yours looks much better. I'm not sure what you are looking for? I'm certainly open for trading though.

At the moment I’m looking for 40k stuff but let me know what armies you have modes for. Refer to my sig to see all of the forces I dabble in.
