What the heck is Volganof, you ask? Well, it is only the pinnacle of 8th edition hobby and you should really spend more time in the back of the Big Red Book. It’s the final chapter in the tale of the mighty yet tragic Chaos Lord Mortkin. After cutting a trail of destruction through Kislev and the Northern Empire he assaults the city of Volganof in an attempt to murder the remaining members of his arch enemies, the von Raukov family.
We (kaltheras and yours truly) have been working towards recreating this battle for a few years now. Project logs for the Empire and Chaos sides can be found HERE and TBD.
The tyranny of real life distance threatened to derail this project for a while but that has been resolved for now. Now we’ve refocused our efforts and with a mere three hundred or so miniatures to still do between the two of us, it seemed high time to start tackling the board. This means mainly building the city itself but also the daemonic siege engines (as well as other smaller terrain pieces outside the walls).
This project log will help us stay organized and motivated...or so we hope. And, maybe we can solicit some advice, opinions and encouraging words as we go through the ups and downs of a substantial hobby project. All comments welcome.
Let’s start with some inspirational pictures. Here is the GW version from the BRB:
This gives us an overall shape and size to aim for. Clearly, we won’t be cutting apart dozens of GW plastic kits nor do we want to build something so solid and almost single piece. After Volganof has burned (or survived...hey, you never know, we may re-write history), we would want to use the pieces in different ways for many battles to come. So, our city needs to be much more modular. The other thing I am taking away from this is the importance of height. Tall towers look really awesome and, they do it while still usable in regular games because they don’t have a much larger footprint.
Here is a city square from steveb on warhammer-empire. I really like this set. What does it for me is the consistent paint job and especially the paving and side walks.
EDIT: seems like these pics don't show up on some devices. For the real deal, go HERE
And lastly, here is the city from the guys over at ‘The Gates of Kislev’ blog (in my opinion the most exciting thing on the internet at the moment).
This is an outrageous number of pricey Tabletop World buildings. Not going to happen. What I like about it is the elevation changes in the city and the road coming down. And, the messiness of the breach looks great. We need to do something similar around Volganof’s Griffon Gate.
Let’s leave it at that for now. Would love to hear if anybody here as attempted something along these lines. How did it go? What materials and techniques did you use? Pictures ?!?
