As they're my current focus, I'm posting this thread to keep track of my dwarf army. I was supposed to be having a challenge with a friend to get the army painted up this yet - he was painting a new skaven army, but he's only managed to build a few units, and hasn't painted a thing. Since I got my Irondrakes done within a week for the painting challenge this month, I realised that the 8th edition dwarf plastics were actually really easy to paint quickly, so I'm trying to power through all of those - I've just completed 20 Ironbreakers (which took 2 weeks), and next up are 20 Longbeards (followed by Hammerers). Here are the Irondrakes from earlier this month: And a couple of views of the Ironbreakers. They were as simple to do - they needed beards done, but none of the fiddly guns to paint. I was going to paint their shields green, but didn't like how a test model looked, plus the metal was quicker, so stuck with that.

These Longbeards are next up - I've got tomorrow off, and can use pretty much the whole day to work on them. They're sprayed Leadbelcher and washed Nuln Oil - it's the drybrushing and then gold work next. An army never feels truly my own until I've got at least a few converted models in there. All my dwarves were "out of the box" until I put together these warmachine crews. I don't like the pre-8th GW dwarves - they don't fit scale or style-wise with the current range (though the warmachines are fine). I used Avatars of War Thunder Warriors/Clan Marksmen (same thing; they re-named the unit to fit the 9th age) - the command models, as the regular ones are lining their guns up to shoot - with arms from the cannon/organ gun kit. I might need to do another three in case I pick up a grudge thrower/bolt thrower in the future. In hindsight, having one of the smoking dwarves hold the gunpowder barrel would have been funnier. This is really just a cross-post of what I've put in this month's challenge thread - my completed 20 Longbeards and 20 Hammerers: The next infantry unit to get painted will either be the Avatars of War Rangers/Quarrelers or Slayers. I'll probably do a couple of warmachines and characters alongside them.

good job. simple and effective. one day you will need to do something fancy to the banner. looking forward to the AoW rangers. those guys are high on my want list and I want to see how you make them shine.

Like most people, I hate freehand, and I don't think I could manage it on a banner that isn't flat. I'm going to take a look at the dwarf blood bowl team's transfer sheet as there may be something in there I can use.
I think the rangers will be relatively simple, as dark/dirty fabrics are easy to paint. The challenge might be the crossbows, which are really poorly cast.

The unit looks suitably regal

I finished building my Thunderers yesterday - that's all my Dwarves now built: I've just started on painting the AoW Rangers, so they should be next.

Very nice! I like how you added the horned helmet to the unit champ! I'm always looking for an excuse to use that! Lol! I fits him nicely! I think I even have 10 more of these Thunderers sitting in a bag somewhere, but after I finished putting together my first lot, I wasn't too keen on doing anymore for some time. You did a great job though!

I hate cleaning up AoW's PVC models (you can't even file them!), but at least these guys were easy to put together - only 3 or 4 pieces each. The Rangers were much worse, having to get great weapon arms to line up. To be fair to them, their more recent batches seem to have crisper detail. As frustrating as they are to work with, if they ever got their dwarf warriors or quarrellers re-released in this material, I'd be all over them.

I agree. The Rangers and Slayers wielding Great Weapons are what really screw up the units. I don't mind the Rangers crossbows as much, though, you can't easily have them positioned out to the front, but those just look super cool.

Great work again!
Among AoW I do like the Dwarfs and ogres. Not sure about the others though.

20 Rangers/Quarrelers done: I'm now up to 90 painted Dwarves, across 4 units, and painted within 3 months. I've just made a start on my test model for my Slayers, so I guess they're next. I also had my first run-out with this army on Sunday, and as soon as I get to grips with Battle Chronicler, I'll get a battle report posted up.

I like em! How are they to rank up? 90 dwarfs in 3 months is a very good amount of stubbornness.

They're pretty terrible for ranking up - both the great weapons blades and hafts, and also the crossbows sometimes poking into the back of the model in front. As you can see from the first photo, you can more or less get them to rank up okay eventually, but it takes a lot of fiddling around with them to work out what combination of models can fit together.

Number the underside of their bases! Or put them on a movement tray and never ever let them die
