Like many, my High Elf collection started with the 4th ed. boxed set. Since then I’ve picked up the odd thing (mainly mage and character models) but it was only in 2013 that I picked up a substantial force. I’ve never really used them bar a few games here and there, probably because they were quite popular at the club and I tend to gravitate towards armies that others don’t, if only to bring variety. That said I’m thinking of digging them out for Riotville as the 3rd of my potential armies.
Archmage (general) - Lore of High Magic, Book of Hoeth, ToP - 320pts
Noble (BSB) - Dragon Armour, Shield of the Merwyrm, sword of might - 140pts
14 Archers - FC - 170pts
5 Silverhelms - FC, shields - 145pts
5 Silverhelms - FC, shields - 145pts
14 Phoenix Guard - FC - 240pts
15 Swordmasters - FC, BOTWD - 275pts
15 White Lions - FC - 225pts
RBT - 70pts
RBT - 70pts
Total - 1800
As I really wanted to try out loads of things I decided to go with an MSU style list. That way I would be able to fit in units of most of them (no Princes/sisters or WL chariot but you can’t have everything). It may seem odd to put the botwd on the swordmasters but they are the most fragile of the elite infantry and I’ve found in general, opponents are less adverse to the banner when it is on that unit vs, say, the White Lions. I’ve also deliberately avoided the Phoenix. It’s a lot of points for what will essentially be cannon bait in this list (not that my other lists don’t have a similar model in them. The difference is those lists take something that isn’t normally seen 😁).
The other combo I was considering was to drop the BOTWD and one unit of silver helms and adding 2 units of ellyion reavers (with musicians and just spears). This then leaves 15pts for a magic standard on one of the infantry, maybe lichborne on the guard or perhaps the flaming banner. In some ways I prefer this list if only due to the additional drop and ability of the reavers to vanguard. I worry at their lack of armour though and my ability to use them well (without needlessly throwing them away), so in that respect I think I’d use the silver helms better.
Your thoughts would be appreciated, especially given my lack of game time with the High Elves.
