The question is simple, which Tomb Kings special character has served you the best on the battlefield? Who is the best tactical choice? And why?
Vote and discuss!

Khalida is probably the most useful, having a set role (in a big block of Archers) where she can sit out of harm and buff them. She can also handle most chaff that might come after her unit.
Ramhotep has some good buffs but is far too easy to kill, and wants to be in the kinds of combats that'll see him slaughtered - a regular Nectrotect doesn't add so much but at least can be protected better and without costing more. Arkhan and Settra are both fun and decent, but not as well protected as you'd want for their cost. Khatep strikes me as being the next most useful for ensuring you know all the spells you want, and for the Liche Staff - while the lack of save isn't ideal, like Khalida he's a character who can be bunkered relatively safely behind your lines.

Khalida was my choice as well. Have had good success fielding her. I think that Khatep, Arkhan and Ramhotep are all very solid. Ramhotep really requires that you build your list around his inclusion because you want to ensure that a large unit of Necropolis Knights gets the 3+ re-rollable armour save. Khatep is a very safe choice, granting you all the spells and miscast protection. Arkhan is perfect for an super aggressive magic approach. Settra is okay, but think he is only useful in a very large game. I've never found the points to field him. I feel he is too expensive though. I am not a fan of Nekaph or Apophas. Those are points that could be much better spend elsewhere.

Not much Tomb Kings action on this forum. Only 2 votes cast, and one is mine.

I chose Khatep if only because I've never fielded Khalida because I only have 20 archers and I think she needs more. Settra was underwhelming the one time I used him. I've done Ramhotep and he's been both amazing at times helping my TG unit obliterate and he's also been killed before any punches were thrown by a smart general.
Arkhan can also be very fun, but I'm personally not a fan of the lore of death - just peprsonal preference only.

You're absolutely right about Khalida, I think she needs a minimum of 50 archers in her unit. I usually field her in a unit of about 75. Ramhotep is very squishy. To get the most out of him you have to eliminate all constructs from your army list except for a single large unit of Necropolis Knights. That way they are guaranteed to get the 3+ re-rollable armour save. This does limit what you can put in your list, but it also means that he pretty much pays for his points cost before the game even begins (that 3+ re-rollable save is very nice!).

Easy quiz.
Arkhan every day of the week. level 5 wizard what's not to like? I have to say I'm more of a light wizard TK player myself though.
Khalida is situational, stick her with 50 archers and your're looking at a 665pt unit that will soon be charged. Great she adds poison but that only gets past the toughness not the armour. Yes, you can expect 17% more hits which is nice but not ground breaking. Plus shes a biff in combat. ASF is good but unless there's no enemies left she's gonna get spanked. Shes not even a tomb king - who ever wrote that rule truly hated Tomb Kings! Made even worse by the fact in her description (page 86) it says Infantry (special character, Tomb King)
Khatep. I like as he's a loremaster.
Settra, really good but made a little crap by not having a ward save and being ona base that doesn't actually fit in a unit.
Not so fussed about the heroes if I'm honest, I've used Nekaph as he's my old tomb king model with the flail of skulls.

This is correct! And not only Settra, his Chariot also has a 4+ ward save.

Not so fussed about the heroes if I'm honest, I've used Nekaph as he's my old tomb king model with the flail of skulls. Greg Arkhan is a great character. I wish he could take the Lore of Light (though fluff-wise it is obvious why he only has access to the lore of Death). Don't get me wrong, the Lore of Death is a great lore (many argue that it is THE best lore) but I wish the range of the spells were a bit greater. Still, Arkhan is a fine addition to a Tomb Kings army. As for Khalida, she does take quite of bit of generalship to get the most of. The biggest issue is keeping units off her as long as possible. The more rounds of shooting she can get off the better for the TK player. Second issue is that of target selection. Her unit can be absolutely devastating against the right target, but that does not hold true against all units. High-armoured units should be avoided unless there is some huge situational need calling for it. The best targets are those that rely on high toughness or high numbers (with light to no armour). For instance, imagine the mess they would make out of a unit like Witch Elves (which would shred TK units in close combat). The Gutstar and Savage Orc Big'uns are other examples out of many that are prime targets. Although less than ideal, medium armored units can also be targeted if they are expensive wounds (like certain Monsters). Just leave the heavily armoured units to the Casket or Stalkers. While her and her unit are expensive, her unit is coming out of core. The majority of TK core will be likely filled with either Chariots and/or Skeleton archers; the latter of which she improves greatly. A couple of reasons why I like her: - against the right unit she can cause game-changing damage at range
- TK are slow and can't reliably get into combat, Khalida forces the enemy to come to you
- Her presence turns the spell Ptra's Incantation of Righteous Smiting into a must stop for the enemy (opening up other spells, such as the Casket's Light of Death).
- She is a hard counter against certain shooty avoidance armies (Wood Elves)
- She is one of the few reliable ways to take out certain units that would devastate Tomb Kings in combat
However, after saying that, I can understand that she does have limitations. I really wish she would pass off her WS to her unit as well, just like other Tomb Kings do. I also recognize that she might not fit in well with all playing styles.

Arkhan the black easily. But this is mainly a throwback to 4th edition 😉

My bad, don't really use him, maybe it was because last time he was burned to death! I think he's better used to buff all the surrounding models rather than actually run away from the main army, it's easy to forge ahead and charge the enemy, destroy them and suddenly you're out or MWBD range. Now all the comments about Khalida are justified. I think it's true of most of the TK characters to be honest, they are good in the right situation. Put khalida in a unit of archers with a herald and the burning banner and you can expect to take down an Abomb in a single turn, but put her in combat and she's in trouble, the archers become too wieldy so you need to get out quickly, a lot of the shooty Khalida lists need diverters to maximise the list but you also want first turn so you'd expect less drops to get the +1 Love the model though. I love Arkhan. He's indeed a powerful wizard choice (Level 5 Death with the ability to store magic dice) and he has a nice profile (WS5, S5, T5) for a liche.
His downside is no real protection, which becomes an issue when you mount him on his (classic) chariot. Also his magic sword basically does not work when Arkhan is atop his chariot.
Hence, your better off fielding him on foot and you should def assign him a Tomb Herald bodyguard.

Also his magic sword basically does not work when Arkhan is atop his chariot. Why does his magic weapon not work when he is fielded in a unit of Skeleton Chariots?

Why does his magic weapon not work when he is fielded in a unit of Skeleton Chariots? -----It does work in that case, to heal other chariots, I was referring to the Tomb King rules for resurrecting warriors saying that it does not effect characters or their mounts, unless otherwise specified. Arkhan's Tomb Blade does not otherwise specify - it's strange he can't heal his own chariot.
