With this post I want to explore the other two options in core: Warriors and Longbeards. I've excluded options for taking them with no upgrades as I just can't see anyone not taking either shields or great weapons as an option (though if anyone has I'd be really interested in knowing why!).

For me it again depends on what i'm taking elsewhere in the army.
I tend to avoid warriors with shields as I dislike the inherent S3 they have. Conversely I love warriors with GW's as they are only 10 points a model and so you can fit a lot in your core and still have room for some core shooting. They would probably be my first choice if I took ironbreakers more.
Having said that, I tend to take Longbeards with shields as I tend to take hammerers over ironbreakers and so I like having the option of one anvil style unit and one hammer.
I could take GW Longbeards if taking Ironbreakers but with the GW they are the same cost as a hammerer but not as effective.

For me it’s always Longbeards with shields with stoicism tune on the banner.

Of the options, I only actually own Longbeards with Shields, so that's what I take. I know one of the issues with Longbeards is that whether you arm them with shields or great weapons, Ironbreakers/Hammerers do the same job better for either just a point more or the same cost. Despite that, I often take all three - the obvious advantage of Longbeards is filling your core allowance; Immune to Psychology is useful too. I've never had "Old Grumblers" take effect, though that may just be because I never remember it.
Shieldbeards also work okay even in smallish units - I've always fielded mine in 20, though I'm upping that to 25 now, and they usually have character support from a Runesmith or Thane. Their damage output isn't terrible and they can surprise an opponent with an occasional S5 charge.
GW warriors are the obvious other strong choice - I want to convert some up eventually. The downside is they usually need to be horded to get best use of them, so you need 30-40.

I mostly have Warriors and Longbeards with shields - Longbeards with shields are the most reliable unit of the 4, I'd say that's obvious, but I like using small units of shield Warriors as tank units sent in to engage enemies simply to stop them engaging my missile units, because if they die then that's not that many points lost and they'll at least give me a turn or two to mount a counter attack with the longbeards or something else. I can see the appeal of great weapon warriors, but I have a nice big unit of 18 Miners that do the same job and can also deep strike so can be used more flexibly.
