My brother had a freshly painted Tyrion model so opted for a High Elves list. He wanted to have a play around with the Wayshard magic item so his list was roughly: Tyrion Level 2 High Mage (mounted) Level 2 Beasts Mage Noble (Halberd, Wayshard, Bow) Noble BSB (Shield of Merwyrm) 20 Archers (containing the Wayshard noble) 33 Spearmen (containing the BSB and Mage) 9 Silver Helms (containing Tyrion & Mage) 20 White Lions 20 Phoenix Guard Repeater Bolt Thrower 5 Shadow Warriors I opted for my Grom list from a previous battle which didn't go so well. Grom really did not perform so well in it so I was keen to give him another go as there are a variety of odd lists I want to try out at some point My list was: Grom Savage Orc Great Shaman (Lvl 4) Goblin Big Boss on Gigantic Spider (LA, Spear, Enchanted Shield) Night Goblin Shaman (Lvl 1) 5 Wolf Riders 36 Goblins (SM) 39 Night Goblins (SCM, Netters, 2 Fanatics, Shields) 23 Savage Orc Big Uns (SCM, Additional Hand Weapons) 10 Savage Orc Boar Boyz (SCM, Additional Hand Weapons) Squig Herd (18 Squigs 6 Goblins) 5 Squig Hoppers 6 Trolls Mangler Squig Giant Rock Lobber Doom Diver Snotling Pump Wagon (Out-rigga, Spikey Roller) I rolled high on the scenery table and set up the board the night before, giving him the choice of which side he wanted. He also didn't fancy anything funky so we just played a standard battle line. the table had a river across one edge and a swamp which was fairly central. I was slightly wary of all the terrain considering the multiple chariots and the Savage Orc Boar Boyz I had. There was a fairly open central portion though and I felt I had him outgunned so he would probably not want to engage in a shoot out. He had very few drops so I placed some Squig Hoppers and the Pump Wagon and Squig Herd on the left to harass his Bolt Thrower and flank. The Mangler and Giant I tried to give a little cover to first turn and the rest were deployed on the centre/right. He deployed on his left mainly with his Scouting Shadow Warriors pressed fairly high up. (Excuse the arm)

He went first, he had rolled Soul Quench and Walk Between Worlds, and Wyssan's and Pann's Impenetrable Pelt for his spells. I got Itchy Nuisance for by NG and Foot, Hand, Brain Bursta and Eadbutt for my SO. The Shadow Warriors advanced on the Night Goblins to trigger the Fanatics. One was launched out in the vague direction of his Silver Helms and one towards the Shadow Warriors which fell short. The winds of magic were not kind but he still managed to Soul Quench off 4 Wolf Riders who fled in panic. His Bolt Thrower also removed the Doom diver with an exceptional multi-shot! The Shadow Warriors managed to put a wound on the Mangler Squig. The Goblin turn began with the Goblins failing their animosity test but rolling We'll Show Em, resulting in a charge on the Shadow Warriors. The Fanatics managed to get themselves into an alright position with one spinning north further towards the Silver Helms and the other not hitting my own troops. Everything else advanced. The Rock Lobber rather predictably misfired first turn and disabled itself. The winds were blowing strong however with the full 12 dice available. With that I tried to cast Itchy Nuisance on the Silver Helms which was dispelled, Hand of Gork on the Mangler which was dispelled, and a big Foot which I managed not to cast Irresistibly and he scrolled it. Disappointment! The Shadow Warriors were cut down to a single Elf by the Goblin Big Boss and turned and fled. The Goblins restrained and reformed to face the oncoming Elven army.

I need to stop doing this, just typed out the entire battle report then lost it. I forgot to take a picture of turn 2 but it was not too exceptional anyway. It started with his White Lions charging the Goblins. His ambushing Archers arrived behind the Goblin line and moved right up behind. The Silver Helms backed away from the Fanatic and the Spearmen and Phoenix Guard advanced slightly. The lone Shadow Warrior continued his long retreat across the board. The Repeater Bolt Thrower took aim at the Mangler and managed to put only a single wound on it leaving it with 1 remaining. The unit of Archers took aim at Grom and his chariot. My brother continued his exceptional rolling and nearly every shot hit with 5 wounds put on Grom. Fortunately his Troll-like regeneration saved every one of them! Yet again the winds of magic were cruel to the Elves and a Soul Quench of the Fanatic was all that was achieved. The Goblins took a bit of a pounding from the White Lions but remained Steadfast. The Big Boss dispatched the White Lion Champion in a challenge. Orc and Goblin turn 2 saw a general advance and the Mangler being sent through the White Lions but falling short of the Phoenix Guard. The Boar Boyz wheeled around with the wood on their flank and the Savage Orcs turned to face the newly arrived Archers. The Mangler only managed to remove 3 White Lions. The Winds were again generous to the Orcs and Goblins but a miscast on Hand of Gork first spell ended the magic phase and caused a wound on the Night Goblin Shaman. The Fanatic was moved away from the front of my own troops towards the Elven Spearmen. The Goblins took a beating from the White Lions and the Big Boss was cut down, they turned and fled escaping from the pursuing Elves Elf turn 3 saw the Silver Helms make a difficult charge into the Boar Boyz and surprisingly the Archers rear charged the Trolls. The White Lions attempted to Swift reform but failed their leadership test and ended up stuck in position facing the flank of the Orc line. The lone Shadow Warrior continued his retreat across the length of the board. In the Magic Phase the Beasts Mage tried to cast Wyssan's on the Silver Helms but it was dispelled. He then cast Walk Between Worlds on the Spearmen allowing them to Ethereally move into the Fanatic killing it, and press forward on the Night Goblins. The Bolt Thrower removed the Mangler Squig with another multi-shot. Tyrion and the Silver Helms killed all but 2 of the Boar Boyz, Tyrion cutting down the Boss in a challenge. They turned and fled, but not before killing the High Magic Mage in the unit. The Silver Helms reformed to face the right flank. The Archers and Noble managed to kill 2 Trolls which in combination with the rear charge was enough to make them flee. The Trolls managed to escape as the Archers pursued.

Cool report so far. I'm glad to see you using Grom again! Please post the rest of the game! I'm on it Goblin turn 3 began with Grom calling a Waaagh! and the greenskins mass charging. Grom and the Night Goblins charged into the Spearmen, the Giant charged into the flank of the pursuing Archers and the Squig Herd managed a long charge into the back of the White Lions. The Pump Wagon also managed to trundle into the Bolt Thrower destroying it in one go. The Savage Orcs swung around again to face the threat of the Silver Helms. The Shaman left the unit, feeling safer now the threat of the Bolt Thrower and enemy wizards was no more. The Squig Hoppers tried to recover some board position moving back towards the centre. The Trolls rallied and faced the Phoenix Guard. The Magic & Shooting Phase saw little of interest, an attempted stomp failed to meet the casting value and a rock managed to miss Tyrion. Grom and the Night Goblins did not go brilliantly against the Spearmen, only managing to kill 7 and taking nearly the same back in return. He needed a 7 to pass his leadership and rolled a 5. Then we remembered we hadn't rolled Grom's Waaagh! CR bonus. It felt like an important moment with the Silver Helms lurking dangerously but the D3 only came up 1 and the Elves remained fighting! The Archers and Noble managed to put 2 wounds on the Giant who swung with his club and thunderstomped the Archers giving them a thorough beating but they remained Steadfast. The Squig Herd began munching the White Lions with 7 elves being devoured by the Squigs. Again the Elves took a beating in the combat but the Stubborn White Lions refused to flee. The Archers managed to reform but the White Lions failed their test. The Goblins had failed to break the Elf line with their charges and now faced a series of counter charges in the coming turn.

High Elf turn 4, the lone Shadow Warrior who had started fleeing right back at the start now caused a problem for the Elves as he sat right in front of the Silver Helms making the prospect of a charge tricky. Tyrion instead charged out of the Silver Helms into the flank of the Night Goblins whilst the Silver Helms wheeled around to block the Savage Orcs. The Phoenix Guard charged the Trolls. The Magic Phase again ended with nothing of note happening so it was onto the combat.. the Phoenix Guard hacked down 2 more Trolls who managed little in return with the Elven wards protecting them. The Trolls fled from the combat and yet again managed to escape their pursuers as the Phoenix guard only managed a 2" pursuit! The Archers managed to inflict another 2 wounds on the Giant and he yet again swung his club at them in retaliation and continued stomping them. Tyrion was challenged by the Night Goblin Shaman who was quickly murdered. The Spearmen killed many Night Goblins and again forced Grom to make 5 saves which between his armour save and regeneration he managed. Striking back Grom finally managed to start killing things but it was not enough. The Night Goblins just about remained Steadfast but Grom broke from the combat. We played this bit slightly wrong (although it made no difference) and only removed Niblit instead of the whole chariot. (pre Silver Helm move)

Goblin turn 4, the Savage Orcs charged the Silver Helms. The Squig Hoppers continued hopping back towards the middle of the battlefield. The Pump wagon pumped harder and marginally fell short of the Phoenix Guard. Grom rallied along with the Trolls and turned to face their foe. In the Magic Phase the Savage Orc Shaman once again tried to cast the big stompy foot but yet again failed to meet the casting value on 5 dice. The Rock Lobber finally managed to hit something, a single Phoenix Guard who made his save. The Giant was reduced to a single wound by the Archers and stomped them into the ground in retribution. He turned to face the Phoenix Guard. The Squigs finished gorging on the White Lions and turned to face the Phoenix Guard. The Night Goblins were massacred by the Spearmen and Tyrion and fled the fight. Yet again the Goblins managed to escape their pursuers. The Savage Orcs butchered the Silver Helms killing them all and overran. High Elf turn 5, we were starting to run out of time so it was potentially the last turn. Tyrion charged the fleeing Night Goblins and destroyed them. The Phoenix Guard charged the Giant who bravely ran away. The Phoenix Guard tried to redirect their charge but only rolled 4 for their charge distance so failed the charge and ambled forward into a particularly sticky position. The Spearmen charged Grom. They managed to wound Grom once with Grom making several saves. Grom had to roll under 6 for his leadership but managed to make it and fought on. The final turn, the Squig Herd charged the Phoenix Guard who also took flank charges from the Pump Wagon and Squig Hoppers. The Trolls flank charged the Spearmen and the Giant rallied. The Shaman lined up a big stomp on Tyrion and finally managed to cast it. The first stomp.. missed, the second stomp.. missed, the third stomp.. wounds, no save or ward, but only 1 wound!.. the fourth stomp.. he stomps my own units! My brother positioned the template on the just-rallied Giant and stomped away his final wound! The Rock Lobber again failed to hit Tyrion. So onto the final combat round, it was obviously a fairly tight battle so all to play for. The Squigs, Pump Wagon and Hoppers only managed to kill 7 Phoenix Guard which felt a little sub-par. The Phoenix Guard managed to kill enough Squigs in return that they were steadfast by 1 and made their leadership. The Spearmen managed to wound a Troll and wound Grom, taking some casualties in return but they remained steadfast and passed their leadership test

All in all a very close and fun battle, one of the ones I've particularly enjoyed in recent times. When we tallied it up it was 1373-1309 to the Orcs and Goblins so super close! Stomping my own Giant to death on the last turn was not fantastic and he managed to not run away in the face of all the last turn charges. On the other hand he did not make a single successful pursuit in the whole battle! He rolled really well when it came to hits and wounds but when it came to pivotal pursuits and leadership tests etc he probably had the worst of the luck, it all evens out (ish ) I'm nominating the Squig Herd for my MVP and the level 4 wizard or Rock Lobber for most disappointing. They just never work out for me!

Excellent game! Hail Grom! Though the game is tech a draw (the difference has to be more than 100 VPs to win). I wish you guys were able to do a turn 6.
Horace, I think your main mistake was spreading your army to thin by stretching your units across the entire length of the table.

I'm inclined to agree, the Pump Wagon and Hoppers in particular were a bit wasted and I could have looked after the Boar Boyz more and got more from the Savage Orcs. I didn't really have much of an answer to Tyrion in this game

That was a very enjoyable read. I always love seeing the older models of your armies and the great terrain, it just reminds me of the white dwarves I grew up with.
