The third edition has been given a release date of Oct this year.
The second ed was launched around the same time as GW killed off the old world and so the game had an influx of players at this time, many who have stayed true to it. The game has definitely gained popularity at our club (and quite a few others in the south and east of London) and is the one most people play.
I dabble in it but have always found it a bit too ‘sterile’. It’s a very balanced game, easy to pick up (as it has a tight rule set) and it’s also quick to play (in comparison to WFB). However the first two are what probably hasn’t completely sold me. I like having a somewhat tiered system of armies. It makes things challenging and the balance in the game is achieved by a lot of the units between armies being pretty ‘samey’. That’s not to say that it isn’t a tactical game but no game has ever got my heart going and given the nervous sweaty hands like a close game of Warhammer. I have always thought that 6th edition Warhammer fans would probably prefer KOW over 8th due to some of the game mechanics.
Mantic have done a great many things right with the game in the last 5 years. Great comms with the players (at a time when GW still had their walls up); an annual update to the game (the equivalent of the generals handbook/chapter approved) and the realisation that a lot of the newer players wanted not just a tight ruleset but a bit more variety (one release expanded the minuscule selection of spells). They even released an expansion book that launched a global campaign (reminiscent of the ‘good old WD days’ and even stuck by the result when updating the lore to reflect the results. Shocking behaviour!!).
So what do we know about 3rd edition. Very little at the minute bar there are a lot more army factions and a new one: The northern alliance. They will also have more lore in the rulebook.
What would I like to see? A bit more variety, especially around customisation of characters. Warmachines be a bit more potent. I’m not convinced they are worth taking at present. A definite expansion of the lore.
Will I buy the new edition and play it. Almost definitely but it will always play second fiddle to Warhammer.
