Hello all,
I am working on a list for my Orcs and want to include a unit of 12-16 Trolls. I want them to get where they need to be and not be next to the general the whole game or smelling the flowers. I was thinking of including an Orc Bigboss on a boar to keep up with them and give them Ld8, maybe the Crown of Command too.
Is having a toll minder the best way to go or does anyone have any other good suggestions for getting the big guys into combat?
Thanks

Initially I'd be leery of fielding a group like that: the lone big boss is vulnerable as his footprint is different from the rest of the monstrous infantry... then again that is the only viable way of having any chance of using a Troll horde in O&G: in reach of the Warboss, BSB and your minder... they should be able to cross the field and eat something! Big point sink though...

Why not go horde if going large? 🤪😂🤪 need to be some option and keep bsb and general close by? Boars/chariots/dragon thingy ? livewaaaaagh I think I remember you posting a BR with a troll horde?

I thought about running them as a horde but usually when I see a horde of big guys half the unit is hanging out of combat. I am not ruling out a horde but I think I will try 4x4 or 4x3 first.

Yeah, initially I was worried about that but we are fairly casual so sometimes it's fun to try something different. On the rare occasions I do play O&G I usually field a unit of Rudlugs, so I am used to the big point sink.

I've seen an Orcs and Goblins list run a unit of 10 trolls in a 5x2 formation with a Warboss on a Boar tagging along with the unit. In that case the Warboss was the general, so it might not be what you're looking for, but the unit did quite well and was a very tough nut to crack.

I was planning on running my warboss with a horde of boys to give them some punch. Let the warboss and BSB hold the center and roll the trolls down a flank.

The list I fought was similar then, yeah. It had a big horde of over 40 Savage Orcs with a Great Shaman in there and the two big blocks were then supported by a myriad of other units. The list worked very well.

I must just be unlucky but every time I've fielded my Chaos Trolls they inevitably fail 2 or 3 crucial Stupidity rolls... so I'll admit I am biased!

One of my opponents in our club competition fielded 6 trolls and used a bsb on foot as a minder. It worked pretty well for him.

I've done this with a Goblin bigboss/warboss on a Gigantic Spider. Same footprint and can be made fairly hardy
