If you cast an augment spell on a friendly unit, does that also grant them magical attacks as long as the spell is in place?

Only if the description of the spell specifically says so. For instance, the Flaming Sword of Rhuin (Lore of Fore)specifies: "The target unit also counts as having both magical attacks and the Flaming Attacks special rule."

To add: obviously, if the augment spell also contains an attack, then that attack will be magical. For instance, Soulfire (an Empire WP prayer)gives the WP and the unit he is in the Flaming Attacks special rule, but also causes a S4/S5 hit on any enemy model in btb with the WP. The latter is a magical (but not a Flaming) attack, while normal attacks by the unit are Flaming, but not magical. Similarly, the hits from augment spells like Cascading Fire-Cloak (Lore of Fire) and Shield of Thorns (Lore of Life) are magical, as they are attacks made by the spell itself.

Weirdly enough there is one Augment spell in the game that has been FAQ'd to grant magical attacks despite not even hinting at it during the spell itself and thats Fists of Gork. this is the only exception as far as I know.
