This thread is devoted to my upcoming counts-as VC army. The living dead were my first Warhammer fantasy army. Or rather out of the random stuff that I bought as a kid, they were the only real force I could make an army of. This was in the magical times of the Undead Army book, when they were still a single force. I played them throughout 5th ed, eventually moving onto standalone Vampire Counts. However, I was never a great fan of the whole vampire schtick, so when 6th ed came I moved onto other projects. My undead models laid packed away, entombed in the depths of wardrobes and lockers. Covered in thick layers of paint by my unskilled teenager hands, or broken into tiny bits by years of poor storage. I occasionally added a model bought on an internet auction, but that was about it. At some point I seriously considered selling them all and investing in the flashy new plastics. Finally I could not shake off the nostalgia. I decided to refurbish every single bit of plastic and metal and make these guys conquer battlefields again. Seems fitting for an undead force no? When choosing a theme for the army I’ve decided to go back to my roots, as I really liked the pre-split Undead. I remember I used to play with a Liche lord a lot, back when Liches were part of the Old World lore and not only found in the Land of the Dead. So initially I am going to focus on an ancient army of Liches, powerful Barrow Kings, spirits and wraiths. I am intending on playing them as Vampire Counts or the Undead Legion from the End Times: Nagash supplement. More on that later. For now let’s just say I am going all in on the goofy 90’s Undead look. With period art and ‘Army of Darkness’ playing in the background as reference, let’s take the plunge! As there isn't much in terms of actual modelling right now, let me leave you with one of my all-time favourite images from the ol’ undead army book to set the tone: Mark Gibbons ftw!

Awesome. This is going to be fun to watch. I am slowly doing something similar (pre-split undead type using ET Undead Legion rules with Barrow King flavor. bone chariots, bone catapults, bone archers, etc) minus some goofy-ness (by using modern plastics, e.g. warlord games skeletons). So, looking forward to sucking lot of inspiration from your efforts here. Get on it!

Thanks for all the comments gents! Awesome. This is going to be fun to watch. So, looking forward to sucking lot of inspiration from your efforts here. Get on it! Ha! So there is a life after Volganof eh? Would be cool to see that, no doubt. My stuff is on a pretty slow burner, need to sort through the piles of plastic and lead. But it will come! Speaking of which, I did unearth a picture I took over a year ago of most of my undead collection. I must warn you as I have taken it with my old potato-quality phone camera and furiously photoshopping it can only achieve so much: Maybe that's for the better as some of those paintjobs are interesting. There's like 50 skellies in there, 40+ zombies, skeleton cavalry and an assorted collection of wights, wraiths and mummies. Not pictured are my ghouls, wolves, some more cavalry, chariots and a finecast Varghulf still on the sprue (a more recent purchase). Plus there is quite a few broken models, which can't stand on their own and did not make the picture. Not a massive army in terms of 8th edition (but a pretty hefty one in 5th/6th). Getting this mess sorted out should keep me busy for the forseeable future. PS. yes the black coach is on some pretty oversized, second hand wheels. The naughty goblins came in the night and left it standing on four bricks I am sorry to say. Had to get them chariots rolling! Luckily I have a few high elven chariots which can go without their wheels for a couple of years before I get to them, so this will be sorted. The circle of life continues! Or should I say....wheel? I'll get my coat.

Nice! You should totally do before/after pics! It'd be great to see "The World That Was" to the "New Old World"! That's what I'm doing with my Empire and High Elves right now.

Ha! So there is a life after Volganof eh? Would be cool to see that, no doubt. Well, I've decided to live a little even during Volganof But, I felt I had too many project logs not getting updated and so didn't start one for Undead. One day, maybe. Nice pile of work there. Are you going to strip every last one? I kind of like to gently revisit old paint jobs of mine, try and keep some of the original work while still making it look ...better. May not work if enthusiastic-teenage-you pasted on the paint too thickly. Still, as mottdon says, do make a few before/after shots. Don't be ashamed. We were all young and wild once. p.s. those wheels look familiar!

Need to check on your blogs for some inspiration . Well, I've decided to live a little even during Volganof But, I felt I had too many project logs not getting updated and so didn't start one for Undead. One day, maybe. Haha I understand. Keeping up with the pictures and posts is sometimes a more daunting task, than painting itself (at least for me). I thought about it for a while, but these models are so inconsistently painted there isn't much I can do! I will keep some of them in their original state for posterity, but otherwise their future lies in a jar of stripping fluid. Fortunately there is quite a bit of bare metal in that lot, so I should be okay. And yeah, those damn wheels! Still can't find a use for them.

Looking forward to this as your post sums up my undead. Mainly from 4th edition (liches and Nagash ftw) with models picked up here and there over the years.

Army ThemeI am not 100% sure how I want to go with the theme for the army. I was thinking about basing it on the concept of an ancient burial ground, overgrown with a forest and hidden somewhere in the Old World (location yet to be determined). Some event (perhaps Nagash’s return), stirs the ancient dead and awakens a powerful liche – a forgotten sorcerer-king from a time long before Sigmar. The Liche summons the dead to his banners, eager to reclaim his once great kingdom, getting rid of its current living inhabitants. To illustrate the image I have in my head, I cannot restrain myself from posting an Army of Darkness reference. I know it’s doubtful, but I can sort of believe Gary Morley watched this movie before sculpting the entire 90’s undead range: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIqC88DUqIwsoooo cornyThe background fits my undead collection of mostly skeletons and wights/ghosts. Zombies would represent the local farmers and burghers, raised by the powerful magic of the Liche, while I will have to work out some ideas for ghouls/crypt horrors (have some ideas already). Some inspiration can be drawn from the 6th edition army list for Heinrich Kemmler, which featured in White Dwarf: (google “Army of the Lichemaster” and pdfs should pop up). Love the concept of shadow druids, unwillingly summoned ghosts (glooms) and walking statues. I have the old Kemmler and Krell models, so they will have to feature in this force at some point. As far as modelling itself goes, I will lay out what I have in mind in a future post. Right now this blog will sadly be mostly about stripping models Here’s a couple oldies from the solvent bath: While the metals are going smoothly, the plastic skeletons seem to have failed their leadership tests and crumbled. Vigoriously scrubbing 20 year old models made of twigs. What could have gone wrong??? ouch

I always loved that they just used 15 of the 6th ed White Hero for a unit.
