Have you read the Time of Legends books on Sigmar? Part of those stories has him going to battle a Litch in a long-forgotten keep. Sounds very similar to what you're describing in your theme. Maybe check it out?

I always loved that they just used 15 of the 6th ed White Hero for a unit. The jolly days of the old mail order eh? Have you read the Time of Legends books on Sigmar? I haven't read it but that sounds fitting. My experience with the black library is pretty limited to be honest. I read the old Gotrek and Felix books, back when william king was writing them, but that's about it. May have to brush up on that. Meanwhile, every journey starts with a single step: Only around 49 more to go

It wasn't Nagash that he went up against (although he does later on). It was some litch king somewhere around the Brass Keep I think. (It's been over a decade since I read the books. I think it was in the second book. Right after he "recruited" Middenheim.

Yeah, that was Morath (original name) a Necromancer from Mourkain who happened to have the Crown of Nagash, which Sigmar then pinched for himself.

sedge and mottdonThanks! After looking into it, seems like Morath's place of operations was the Brass Keep, which seems like an interesting point on the warhammer map. Incidentally this stuff is already mentioned in the 4th edition Undead army book too, I just skipped it somehow. More food for thought, which is what I need right now. NaitsabesI do only own 50 skellies. I can't honestly say I wish I had more right now, as stripping them is a royal pain. They absolutely fall apart even when I try to scrub gently. They have been broken and re-assembled countless times in the past though, so I shouldn't be suprised. Seems the glue joints weaken in the stripping agent I use. Still, soldiering on! Did some rummaging and found myself something to read, whilst I wait for another jar of skeletons to marinate: The older ones are mine, while the 7th ed comes from my brother's collection. I don't own an 8th edition one yet, but I hope to hunt one down soon. I have given up on finding the magic cards for VC, they seem super rare.

Haha, I have a very similar secretary desk as part of my set up as well! Great minds.

Army compositionSo last year I have played a few test games with VC to see how the army feels. You can see some of my endavours in this thread: eefl.freeforums.net/thread/1818/fresh-start-vc-1000-pointsI've tested two lists, one led by a vampire and one by a necromancer. The one with the vampire seemed more fun, so I am leaning towards it as a starting point, even though I am likely to drop the vampire at a later point. I realize the necromancer-led one would fit into my desired theme more, but I can probably make this work. In the more recent past I have been giving 1000 point battles a try and found them to be really fun. They are short, bloody affairs, with usually one side being crushed utterly. Even though they are not as tactical as 2000+ point games, they're ok if people don’t abuse hordes and magic. Completing a 1000 point list is what I am going to aim at first. Playing games is what gives me an incentive to carry on with a project, hopefully this will be the case here. As a further motivator, I have roped myself into running a small, one day event for my 3 other regular opponents. This will be a 1000 point event, with 3 games each. The only condition to be met, is that each of them has to enter a 'secondary' army that they are currently working on. As all of us have at least 2 armies each, this condition is easily met and my friends have jumped on the idea gladly. To be honest they are doing a much better job than me, as two of them have almost completed their 1000 point forces for the event! Perhaps I should have not announced this idea early on last year.... The list I currently want to do is: Vampire on foot Wight King on steed 40 skeleton warriors 9 black knights 5 dire wolves Varghulf A bit over 50 models and a good backbone for future progress. Right now I'm working on the skeleton warriors still: [/url] Twenty more are already stripped, just need re-building. I am also cleaning up some of the old mounted wight models. Hopefully this will go faster!

Unit is looking good. Especially with the classic metal command options.
1000 point games are great and can sometimes be more tactical and strategic than larger games as everything is arguably more valuable and the game size prevents some of the more destructive things from appearing.

Hi all! Sorry for the hiatus. Real life interferes with glorious dreams of undead armies marching across the Old World. Between the pandemic, work woes and a bit of a furniture re-arrangement at home I did not have any chance to move forward with the project up until autumn. The inability to do any painting forced me to play in the event I organised with unpainted models….and loose terribly, due to the rules I have myself put in place, which favoured completed armies! Oh the ignominy! All is not lost however. I have a chance to redeem myself as I am planning to repeat the single day event in a couple of months (pandemic permitting etc.) with 1500 point armies this time. Turning this into a sort of slow-grow campaign. Preferably we can push this to 2500 or perhaps even 3000 points at some point. Before I get to those crazy plans however, I will need to first complete at least a single model (SIGH). So what have I been up to? Well the good news is that the skellies are all restored – around 50 of them as you can see. I have also started to construct some unit fillers. I’ve bought a ton of resin embellishments from various makers, to pimp my bases. The idea is to make the skeletons look like they are emerging from an ancient, overgrown burial ground or temple. Here's a test one: It is still missing the leafy groundcover, but I first need to finish off the putty work. The next ones are barely started. I’ve also made some tests for the bone colour I am going to use. I've decided to give the contrast paints a try, to cut some time. Here are the test specimen so far: From left to right its goregrunta fur, goregrunta fur + skeleton horde, skeleton horde. I think I lke the middle one the best. I thinned down the paint with contrast medium and did some fast and simple highlights with wraithbone. Might add a bit more with some pure white, but so far I am happy with the effect for the time spent. All for now but I hope I will be able to make some progress now that my life has settled down a bit again.

real life and world events interfering with the hobby?!? That's just not acceptable. Glad to see you might be turning a corner. I like your contrast paint experiments. Looking good. You could consider doing models in different shades of bones for a more unruly look to the unit. Not every corpse rots the same way?

Thanks man! I am planning on painting them assembly line style, so don't want to go overly crazy figuring how to paint each skelly. Their bases will probably take longer then the models themselves. Since I am mixing the paints I hope that some variation will happen naturally

More of the resin add-ons arrived, this time from micro art studios and spellcrow. Also my mate donated some dryad/treemen bits to the cause. I am using the big base to make areas of abandoned stone floor on the skeleton's bases. The individual tiles break off very easily. The Micro art ones are much tougher and require using a little saw. It's all looking pretty good so far, adding some height difference to the bases makes the whole unit look a bit less coherent. Here are some sample ones: I am roughly 2/3 way working through the regiment. Have to slice some of the skeletons off of from their bases and it's turning out to be pretty tricky. When I'm done with this I will re-visit the unit fillers.

Nice work so far. What is that ship in the background? Part of this project? Thanks mate! It's the hull of the mighty Vasa. A swedish warship from the XVII c. Has a fascinating story and has nothing to do with my army, just have nowhere else to keep it right now . Although now I look at my photos with the ship in the back, I am having second thoughts on switching my theme to Vampire Pirates. Also reminds me of this:
