My opponent decided to use his 2 dwarf cannons to snipe Epidemius in his large blob of plaguebearers and it created some questions.
When the first cannonball hit, he said to take ward saves for both epidemius and his palanquin (I'm pretty sure that's wrong in retrospect).
Epidemius passed, palanquin died. Then epidemius was allowed to take "look out sir" rolls on subsequent shots since he was no longer mounted on a larger base than the unit.
How should this really work?

Epidemius (+ Palaquin) has the troop type Monstrous Cavalry, and thus follows “all the cavalry rules…with two exceptions – Monstrous Cavalry always use [the profile with] the highest Toughness and Wounds characteristics the model has." Hence, it is a single model, which can take only a single ward save; and if enough damage is done, both Epidemius and the Palanquin are killed.

Thanks for that. I'm new to the game and my buddy mixes up about 5 editions worth of rules.
So there is no way for epidemius to avoid sniping other than hiding behind a hill? No look out sirs etc?

Well, he cannot join either the Plague Drones or the Bloodcrushers, but, while he cannot join them, he can still benefit from the "lesser" LoS (4++), if he is within 3" of such a unit (provided it has at least 5 R&F models).

On a side note: hiding behind a hill will not do Epidemius necessarily any good against cannon fire. The target of a cannon is hardly ever the model or unit one actually wants to hit.

Hmm. Cannon rules are pretty bizarre.

chrach7 : to be effective, the cannon rules require you to choose as a target a spot on the ground more or less 6" in front of the back of the unit you want to hit. That is the spot you need line of sight to. Hence, if Epidemius is hiding behind a hill, but the cannon has line of sight to a spot in the area up to the top of the hill, Epidemius could still be hit. Naitsabes: True to a certain extent. On the one hand, terrain is either random, or conditional on the agreement of both parties; on the other, the maze still may have no effect, if the appropriate line of sight can be established, as obstacles wil only stop the cannon ball after the bounce.
