I was discussing my thoughts on creating an army. I wanted slaanesh, beastmen and warriors of chaos. This is mainly due to the look and I think it would be really cool.
So, I don’t want to go all demons as I think loads of the Khorne stuff looks overly he-man American wrestler. There’s not enough options for a full slaanesh list (or it would get boring). I don’t want all beastmen cos I can’t be bothered (looks like a farm) and warriors has some stupid models too. So fluff wise the alliance works and I think it would look really cool.
I was told this was only possible with end times.
However... in big red there is the section on alliances which says otherwise. Also, in grand campaigns we have had various armies all lined up along a very long table edge. But why are people not stepping outside their army books and playing 2000 points army lists? I’ve not seen it done. Goblins and orks is pretty much an alliance list and a great one too.
8th 40k raised similar questions with keywords, or whatever, that would enable you to mix many armies up. And with the fluff it all works- knights with, marines and the guard. But no one does it.
So what are your thoughts? Have you ever played or put together such an army? Why are the hard covers of army books holding back the creative magic of the old world? (Boom. Mic drop)

I don't see a problem with the ET Chaos Legion. I have played with and against quite a few. You need to remember that the Reign of Chaos table is quite a bit better than what's in the Daemon book and hence go a bit softer when it comes to your unit choices. The list makes it possible to put together nicely themed lists. The bad rep comes from people using it to cram together the most powerful units from the three books into one army.
and why not make a little list that is an alliance from two army books. or come up with rules for a cool non-GW model? the short answer is: play what's agreeable within your group. If that happens to be 'only standard army books with only the standard six scenarios' you are out of luck.
unless...since I really like the hobby side of things I would probably paint/model the most awesome non-standard army possible then ask for a game. Only the most cold-hearted hardcore tournament player could turn that down, right?

This is a very common misconception. The Alliance section of the BRB is covering multiple players allying(it's literally there in the first sentence). Nothing in the section actually allows a single player to go against the earlier rules and build multiple armies in a "standard" game without house ruling otherwise. You don't see it because the game's core rules don't allow it.

It's the kind of thing that's okay if you've agreed it with your opponent first. There are lots of cool battles from Warhammer history with allied armies, and it's fun to refight them.
I agree with Naitsabes that the Legions of Chaos list is the best way to go about it, particularly as it makes Beastmen bearable - otherwise it's hard to justify fitting them in over Warriors of Chaos units. I use Legions of Chaos for my mixed Tzeentch/Slaanesh chaos forces sometimes.

I’ll just have to go end times on it then and destroy the old world again again with ridiculous amounts of magic. The mixed list is the only one that makes sense to me re chaos. And chaos is a big deal in warhammer, isn’t it how GW separated themselves from Tolkien cannon in court?, if you’re not getting involved in chaos in warhammer I think you’re missing out. I could imagine secret bretonian covens in there too to fully realize the Satanic cult vibe of it all. The old world is ours now, at least until they release the new old world and then I don’t think anyone is going to be happy:)

Considering they lifted it near wholesale from Moorcock? Not really.

GW once made official Elric of Melnibone miniatures, too. Their use of the Chaos Star is officially endorsed by Moorcock.

Even seemingly innocuous terms may come up (no pun intended) with unexpected results. Years ago, I wrote a paper on the Serbian terrorist organisation 'Black Hand' and another on the Serbian PATB (Police Anti-Terrorist Brigade). I guess, it was perhaps to be expected that a search for the former resulted in quite a few porn sites, but even PATB?
