Managed our first game in some time and I decided to make use of my newly painted Night Goblins to put together an all goblin list (with monstrous friends). I went with: Skarsnik NG Great Shaman (Lvl 4) NG Big Boss Battle Standard (Armour of Destiny, Shield) NG Big Boss (Great Cave Squig, LA, Spear, Enchanted Shield) 5 Wolf Riders 30 Goblins (S,M, Shields) 52 Night Goblins (S,M,B, Nets, 3x Fanatics) 32 Night Goblins (S,M,B, 1x Fanatic) Spear Chukka Squig Herd (30x Squigs, 10x Herder) 10 Squig Hoppers 6 Trolls Arachnarok Spider Doom Diver Rock Lobber Mangler Squig Pump Wagon (Flappas, Spikey Roller) He went for something along the lines of: Loremaster of Hoeth (Talisman of Protection, possibly other magic items) Archmage (Lvl 4, Book of Hoeth, Talisman of Endurance) Noble (Battle Standard, possibly other magic items) 34 Spearmen (S,C,M) 10 Silver Helms (S, C, Shields) 5 Reavers (Bows) 19 Phoenix Guard (S, C, M) 24 Swordmasters (S, C, M) 20 White Lions (S, C, M) Bolt Thrower Bolt Thrower We rolled the scenario and it came up Blood & Glory. The table was set up as below with an Earthblood Mere in the centre then I rolled for the village side of it. For spells I rolled a double and also nabbed Curse of da Bad Moon so was relatively happy. Vindictive Glare and Itchy Nuisance seemed like helpful rolls facing Elves so I plumped for Gork'll Fix It over Gift of the Spider God with my double choice. Mr Blank was most displeased with his rolls, he really wanted Fiery Convocation, and had to make do with Apotheosis, Soul Quench (traded away Hand of Glory), Tempest & Walk Between Worlds If he was unhappy with those rolls, he was not loving Skarsnik's Sneaky Schemes delaying his Silver Helms, Spearmen & most importantly his Reavers. To make matters worse, after deployment (below) and 4 re-rolls with the +1 to go first, the Night Goblins ended up with the first turn. I started my deployment with my Squig Herd and Night Goblins in the centre and my Trolls close by for leadership babysitting. He deployed heavily to one side right at the back so I placed my wolves and hoppers to the flank to pressure one of the bolt throwers and my destructive pieces and archers on the flank to move up on him.

Looks like a fun game! Go Night Goblins! I always have a soft spot for them and am pulling for them to pull out a win. High Elves are always a tough match up for them. Thanks for posting.

The Night Goblin Archers failed their animosity but rolled We'll Show Em and moved up. I declined the charge with the Wolf Riders, instead moving them into an awkward position. The Squig Hoppers would also have had an awkward charge distance to roll so instead I changed tack and brought them inside. This however started to really congest things with my large regiments and horde. The winds were kinder this time around and I managed to cast Itchy Nuisance on the Silver Helms, gimping them for 6 initiative and movement, and Gork'll Fix It on the Bolt Thrower but failed to cast Vindictive Glare on the Swordmasters and Skarsniks Prodder (partly because I forgot all my mushroom dice). The artillery managed to kill a couple of Silver Helms and a Phoenix Guard after all the scattering. The Elves continued to camp in their corner, a mistake in my eyes. The Silver Helms charged the Wolf Riders who fled and were subsequently charged down by the Reavers. The winds of magic were cruel granting Mr Blank snake eyes His Bolt Throwers managed to pick off a couple of Squigs and Hoppers. Onto my turn, I was really starting to struggle winkling the large regiments through the gap and at this point I should have just admitted defeat and reformed. The Night Goblin Archers failed their animosity but rolled We'll Show Em and moved up. The Squig Hoppers charged into the Bolt Thrower. The rest of the army continued advancing. The winds of magic were again meagre, Skarsnik managed to Fry a couple of Swordmasters with his prodder. The Archers and Spider began to pepper the Swordmasters and picked a few of them off. The Rock Lobber hit-misfired at the Phoenix Guard but was not disabled. The Squig Hoppers munched the Bolt Thrower The Elves finally moved from their corner (a little). The Silver Helms and Reavers swept around towards the rear of the Goblins. The winds of magic laughed at Mr Blank 's two expensive mages as they delivered him another sub 5 dice roll.. I forget how many it was an entirely forgettable magic phase. He pinged off another couple of Hoppers with his shooting.

Onto Goblin Turn 4, I was wary of going too early with the units already in position and simply feeding them piece by piece to the Elven grinder. Instead my units advanced towards the Elves and the Night Goblins released their fanatics. The Pump Wagon landed just short of the Swordmasters. The Archers Fanatic killed a couple of White Lions and the other Fanatics all landed inbetween - not a terrible result. The Spearmen reformed to face the threat to the rear and the Squig Hoppers moved towards the edge of the board on the flank of the Phoenix Guard. The Squig herd continued to struggle maneuvering. The Shaman left the cover of the unit to take up a more advantageous position. The winds of magic were generous which allowed me to 6 dice Curse of da Bad Moon through the Spearmen and White Lions. The Shaman narrowly avoided being sucked into the void. The Rock Lobber landed a stone directly on the Loremaster's head and he failed his Look Out Sir but unfortunately his ward saved him. The White Lions and the Swordmasters charged the Pump Wagon. The Silver Helms and Reavers continued to advance right up to the rear. There was not really anywhere for the Elves to go at this point and they declined the opportunity to charge through the array of Fanatics. I can't remember how many magic dice he got.. it was not many. I think he failed to cast Spirit Leech on my Battle Standard and his concentration was broken. The Elves smashed the Pump Wagon easily. The remaining Hoppers were shot off. Goblin Turn 5, it was time to get stuck in properly. The Trolls, Arachnarok and Archers all charged the Spearmen. The Big Boss on the Great Cave Squig, badly wounded from all the sustained shooting, charged the Phoenix Guard. The Shaman retreated back to the Night Goblin unit who reformed along with the Squigs after finally admitting defeat at squeezing through. The Shaman Curse of da Bad Moon'ed the the Swordmasters and White Lions again and also managed to cast Itchy Nuisance on the Swordmasters but unfortunately only came up with a 1. The shooting was ineffective but the Trolls, Arachnarok and Archers butchered the Spearmen, who broke giving up their Battle Standard and regimental standard and sending the General fleeing. The Trolls pursued the enemy while the other units reformed

All in all it felt like a relatively comfortable victory although it was a bit nerve wracking being exposed to the game deciding Leadership tests when I felt the game was under control! Mr Blank was not helped with his winds of magic but that's what always happens whenever I go magic heavy.. Corner camping didn't feel like the right tactic with an Elf army to me, but I'm glad to see the decades of Goblin Fanatic punishment has instilled a suitable amount of fear in him MVP - Night Goblin horde - tanking the High Elf Specials Must Do Better Award - All my artillery - I can never make O&G warmachines pay off.

what about the hoppers and the Hero? are you playing them often? are you satisfied of their performances? I am going to buy finally one unit but I know they are generally considered not competitive at all.

First time I've used them I previously had just 5 hoppers which didn't really work as chaff. 10 hoppers and a big boss comes in at ~200 points so they're quite steep but I feel they do have some utility as a meaty chaff clearer (you can not flee from them)/ flank threat. Definitely not an optimal choice but who doesn't love night goblins + squigs?!

I enjoyed reading this battle report. And it is good those flimsy elves got a good beating from the goblins.
Cheers, WGG

I should probably have ignored the blood and glory rules and just tried to win via points, I'm not sure there was much chance of getting rid of the big unit of night goblins steadfast especially without fiery convocation! Although with my winds of magic rolls in the 1st 4 turns of (1,1), (1,2), (1,2) and (2,2) I would have had trouble casting it!

Nice report. As you said, I'm not sure I agree with the HE strategy....he Goblins had more shooting than the Elves.
