it's been a bit quiet here of late so I'll start a thread.
my first army was lizardmen when i started playing in 5th , i pulled the short straw with my friend and got them. I glued and painted with all the skill a frustrated 9 year old with 2 left hands
with the furlough I finally had the time to strip the paint and super glue off them and I'm determined to paint them with the skill of a 30 year old with 2 left hands !

I started with Skaven. And being a bit OCD I had to have ALL the options, in sufficient number to field.
That's... a lot of rats. Lots and lots of rats. Hundreds of the wee buggers. Took quite a few years to wade through.
Trivia. Having roughly 6,000 points of Skaven and 14,000 points of Dark Elves results in the same general number of models for each army...

Empire. A friend had bought models for multiple armies as we really didn't know what we were getting into. He eventually decided to keep the Elves and so I ended up with the Humans.
edit: This was ~1992

I have the same problem, hence why my greenskin army (which ive never posted here) is out of control

I have 2 answers. My brother and I got into warhammer by buying the 6th edition starter box. I took the empire, he took the orcs. We stuck with the minis in the box never growing those armies any larger. So those were more like warbands to me. The paint jobs were terrible but I was hooked.
Then we started to build our full size armies. I did dwarves (which is still my main army) and my brother high elves.

I grew up with 5 sisters, and no father-figure due to my parents separation. So it'd be fair to say I craved a life outside of the family home!
I made a male friend in my school year who had 2 older brothers, separated parents, and the parent whom he lived with worked nights and slept through the day. So much freedom! So I became an honorary member of their family over the years, and there was a lot of stuff that wasnt around in my house: Football games, Comics and Bloodbowl.
So I started playing Bloodbowl, I had a Goblin Team - then I saw the older brothers playing WFB (this would've been 4th ed). And after reading a few White Dwarfs I started a High Elf army. I remember umm-ing and ah-ing over wood or High elves for ages!
It was quite costly for me, and in the end I sold my high elves and funnelled that money in to Bretonnian army (2003?).
And over the years of playing the occasional game etc I got back in to it in 2010 when 8th ed came out - I have since owned...
Lizardmen, Chaos Dwarfs, Daemons, Dwarfs*, High Elves* (again), Ogres*, Goblins*, Bretonnians* (again) Warriors of Chaos* Beastmen*.
*=Still owned

It's a stupid amount of armies, lol. I don't have a huge connection to my first army - they weren't painted and I didn't really know how to play.
I just enjoyed playing, banter and rolling dice... pretty much the same as now!
But I must've read the 5th ed High elf book cover to cover a hundred times. Which is why I got a new high elf army later on - there can't be a warhammer without the elves!

Dark Elves. I'm not counting the 8th Ed starter set that a GW staffer sold me.
I'd collected 40k from the age of around 8 - 13 then fallen out of the hobby. In my early 20s I wanted to get back into wargaming and spent months poring over all the models for each 40k and fantasy army. I picked Dark Elves, because elves on dinosaurs. You can't get cooler than that.
Then like 8 years later I actually painted those models.
Dark Elves are still one of my biggest armies but I probably have more Undead now. They're still my favourites, and I'm finally giving them the painting attention they deserve.
