When I first dove into WFB, 3rd edition has just released and I jumped in headfirst starting with both Bretonnians and Undead. I like having two opposing armies and I just loved the backgrounds of both of these armies at the time. Though I still have a bunch of my original Bretonnians - both painted and unpainted, I regretfully sold all of my Undead. I miss those box sets from the 80’s...Nightmare Legion and Machineries of Destruction with Screaming Skull Catapult and Chariot. Oh well.😊

I've been back into the hobby for 2 years how.
I started with a Warriors of Chaos army that was abandoned at around 1000 points.
Then I went Ogres where I have just over 2000 pts. I do want to flesh out some units but what I need is out of stock at the moment.
My lockdown army has been Dark Elves (wanted something that played very differently to ogres) which is now just over 2000 pts. Currently waiting for some more lizards and a dragon.
Now planning my next army...

My first army was Dwarves. Always had a high affinity for them. Played between age 8 and 12. Then dropped out of it for 20 years.
Sold my sizable army (sob).
Last year, a friend invited me to a game. Got thoroughly hooked back in.
Favourite army is Lizardmen, but I also have fairly large Ogre Kingdoms, Tomb Kings and Daemons of Khorne.
They make me happy.

My first army was empire. I got in late in the game, right at the end of 8th edition. We lasted a while through early 9th age when it was still basically just enhanced 8th. I have had a massive unbuilt dwarf throng all this time. After the old world drop, I went back and built all my unfinished empire and have finally started making these dwarfs. Feels good man. My first army was Dwarves. Always had a high affinity for them. Played between age 8 and 12. Then dropped out of it for 20 years. Sold my sizable army (sob). What a sad story, you should come back to the Karaz Ankor brother.

*Deep breath. Assume meditative pose. Okay. Go.*
My first purchase was a handful of Space Marines, a unit of their bikers and a Chaplain on a bike because I thought he looked cool. I got those because a friend of mine had just bought a 40K starter set and was BEGGING me to get some and play with him. I had no books and NO idea of what I was supposed to be doing. I just liked putting the models together and painting them. If I got to play with my art, that would be amazing. Fast forward a year later, I ask my friend how his army was coming, to which he replied, "Oh, I sold those a long time ago." I had been working away hard on them (or so I thought at the time) and I was furious. But what was I to do? I've never been one to just sell something that I have bought and worked on, but I knew I really liked the hobby. So, after taking a hard look at books, brochures, stores, etc (I'm not a gambler and usually heavily research anything that I'm going to invest lots of time and money into) I decided that I'd really rather collect, paint and (hopefully) play a fantasy game instead of Sci-fi.
Enter 6th edition starter set. I knew this time that I needed to do it right and get the books along with a properly built army. My choices where Empire and O&G. I always loved the ideas and imagery of knights, but I was always very fond of Wolves (the football team I played on in High School was the Wolf Pack, my first bicycle was a "Timberwolf" bike, etc. - so I found a lot of inspiration from these things) and at the time, there were several "wolf" factions for the Empire. So I bought 2 boxes of Teutogen Guard, a box of Knights of the White Wolf, a wizard box, Valten on foot and Exalted Valten (mostly because of the Fabio hair). Thus began my deep, deep foray into Warhammer Fantasy.
I'd have to say though, my first army that I CHOSE to collect, apart from a starter box, was High Elves. That was a REALLY hard choice for me because I love Dwarves so dang much! But ultimately HE won out because...dragons. What're knights without a dragon to charge down?
My armies all have grown to ridiculous proportions, most over 10,000 points. So far, I own 10 armies: Empire O&G High Elves Dwarves Wood Elves Lizardman Tomb King's Dark Elves Ogres Skaven In that order. Skaven is probably my smallest just because it's difficult to amass 2500+ points of Skaven core. Empire is by far my largest. Around 25,000 at this point.

Orcs and Goblins! I grew up in a family that lived paycheck to paycheck most of my life so it was a really big deal when my parents splurged on the 6th edition starter set for me when I was 13 for Xmas. 19 years later when Covid first hit the USA I went back and repainted all the boyz and arrer boyz from the set and plan to use them in a game alongside my current night goblin army!

Dark Elves of course!!! Malekith is a more powerful Darth Vader riding a black dragon... How is it even a choice? I loved the ruthlessness and survival of the fittest aspect of the dark elf society and the few elite troops bolstered by twisted monsters. I remember looking in my brothers 6th edition High elf book and seeing a picture of the two armies meeting. I could never understand how he could choose the lesser elves, I've questioned his taste ever since

My first fantasy army was Dwarfs. I love their stout nature and their lore in the Warhammer world. However, if Ogre Kingdoms had existed when I started i would have started with them easily. They just fit me perfectly. Here is a list of my Fantasy armies in order of current preference:
Ogres Dwarfs Brettonians (a beautifully painted army that i purchased from a friend so that it would stay in the group) Lizardmen Daemons (collected and painted for a tournament)
The first 3 armies are all around 5000 points. The Lizardmen army has 2000 painted, but 5000 potential, roughly, and the Daemons are around 3000.

You don't hear many people say that they are their favorite.

I love the lore about them, I love their ridiculous characters, the troops are hilarious (Leadbelchers? Maneaters? Firebellies? They're hilarious!) I love all of the monsters (just like I love my dinos), the cannon, the Gnoblars as a ridiculous chaff unit with an edge (I love trappers!). And Mournfang Cavalry is awesome. They aren't the most OP army, but they're fun to play. For me, this is the deciding point and why I didn't get WoC or High Elves. They're super powerful armies, but the lore doesn't do it for me and I hate the idea of going in for an army just because you want to have the best one. I'd always prefer one that I love the lore of even if it's not powerful (case in point, I have a huge TK's army).

For me, Ogres are a great army to customize. Every unit type had a very unique flavor to them. Each unit has a battle role that is not really capable of being done by another unit. Ironguts are your heavy hitters, Ogres are your mass attack generators, Gnoblars help with luring units out of position, sabretusks are great chaff and chaff chasers. I could go on. Other armies have units that are often very similar to each other. Then there is the lore. The Great Maw, their belief that a bigger belly makes a better Ogre, the insignificance of gnoblars, and their hard as nails heroes. I've had a slaughtermaster, with my secret build combo, go toe to toe with a Bloodthirster on more than one occasion. I didn't kill it, but was alive long enough to allow the Ironguts to arrive and make their presence known. Damn, now I need to go buy some more Ogres. Oh well.

Well, those are all excellent reasons. For me, it's Empire due to all of the various provinces. I can have 3, 4 or however many different unit, from different provinces, all coming together to fight under one colorful banner. I love that. Seeing the arrayed armies all over the table is probably THE thing I like the most about this game. And no other army can look so multi-cultural, yet so United than the Empire.
They also have a little bit of everything. They may not be the BEST at something, but they can certainly make it a challenge.
Besides, Ghal Maraz.
