I gather I'm not alone here as a person who struggles to decide on an army to start but one I'm off I'm all in? You are fully within a ‘safe environment’. Most of us have multiple armies (10 for me). My kryptonite is listening/reading or writing/compiling army reviews. Each time I do that, I have a huge urge to buy that army.

My kryptonite is reading army books. By the end of them I want to get the army. But I also love reading the books... Bad combination

Maybe Vampires too as an option for something new? I feel Lizardmen, Orcs, Skaven, Dwarfs or Vampires are good options that are different from DE and OK. So I went into my local GW to order Dark Elf assassin and came out with a Necromancer as well so Vampires it is. Thanks for all the help/advice. Now waiting for pay day to go and get some core unit models (probably ghouls)...

It may be worth taking a look at Mantic games (Kings of War) as their ghouls & zombies are considerably cheaper than GW and aren’t bad models. I actually prefer the aesthetic of the ghouls too. The Mantic models aren’t to everyone’s tastes and you won’t get everything but thought I’d mention it.

Thanks for the heads up. I will have a look They’ve changed their website and it doesn’t appear to be the most user friendly on the phone anymore but the undead range are here: www.manticgames.com/games/kings-of-war/undead/page/3/ (there are 4 pages I think) They also have a tomb king-esq range (empire of dust): www.manticgames.com/games/kings-of-war/empire-of-dust/This is a newer range than the undead. The models are behind GW on quality but as I said the price is much better and you can conveniently buy a horde of zombies etc in one purchase

I do like Mantic’s Empire of Dust range, I have to say. Their Skeletons are a lot more ornately clothed than the old GW ones and I imagine they also have more accurate proportions (i.e. their bones aren’t as thick as the whole arms of living models like the old GW ones were...). Their archers look great in that they’re firing side-on rather than with their bodies facing the enemy, and they’re great value with 20 Skeletons for around £20. Not to mention that they’re about the only Egyptian Skeletons around right now available in large numbers (quite a few other companies have made Skeletons but probably because they don’t want a cease-and-desist order from GW they made them Ancient Greek like in the old Jason and the Argonauts film, which look good in their own way but not in a Tomb Kings Army where you want them to be Egyptian). My only misgivings are that they are half-metal half-plastic rather than a new plastic kit, and that they only have a fraction of the range so far because they’ve since been messing around with other armies like the Nighstalkers and the Northern Alliance - there are still no Horsemen, Chariots, Sphinxes, or Colossi yet.

Late to the party here but if you're starting Vampire Counts, your best source of good looking zombies is Fireforge Games:https://fireforge-games.com/living-dead/364-living-dead-peasants.html and fireforge-games.com/living-dead/365-living-dead-warriors.html -- there's several of us on the EEFL forum who have those models and they're really impressive and the peasants fit in perfectly with WFB. I'm a Mantic hater so I wouldn't recommend going anywhere near them. Their models are Grade A Goofy, and have horrible mould lines. GW Skeleton Warriors are great, and the Ghouls are decent enough plus match the aesthetic of the (very impressive) Strigoi Ghoul Kings and (okay-ish) Crypt Horrors. There's also some really cool and characterful Ghouls that came in an Underworlds "team": www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/WHU-The-Grymwatch-EN-2019 that can be used to spice up a unit.

I'd definitely say O&G are one of, if not the most, varied army. They have many themes you can build around, tons of options. I find them fun to play but I don't mind a bit of random.
Also pure NG (plus monstery friends) is definitely viable. Especially if you don't play in a power gamer environment
