So since I've been turning my focus back towards Daemons I've been considering the gaps in my collection and one of them is Herald BSB models. But are they worth the effort?
In mixed lists clearly not (imo) but if you are going mono god or nearly mono, would you take one?
The cost of a squishy herald and the 25 points in an already unbreakable army has me questioning whether to bother. Rerolling the instability is tempting however

The part that bothers me is that you are forced to re-roll (at least that's how I understand it) even when you'd rather let the first roll stand (e.g. because you missed just by one). so I usually pass. khorne and tzeentch, my favorite gods, have extra-squishy heradls, maybe with a Nurgle focus it is more useful?
It is a cool conversion opportunity for sure.

The re-roll is a choice, not an obligation. Daemons of Chaos AB, p. 26 (Daemonic Instability):
"They can, however, be re-rolled if the battle standard is within 12", use the General’s Inspiring Presence rule, and/or be tested on unmodified Leadership, if the unit is Stubborn/Steadfast."

see, I thought 'can' in this context actually means 'have to' and is one of the peculiarities of the English language that I as a non-native speaker will never understand. I much rather have it be optional, in which case a daemon BSB is a much more attractive choice.
I do recall reading discussion about 'regular' BSBs and how you have to use that re-roll even if you were happy to have a unit flee. But, checking the rulebook (yes, I actually did!) the 'Hold Your Ground' wording is different and definitive: "..friendly models within 12" of the BSB re-roll failed Leadership tests..". No 'can' there.

Exactly. "Can" in English can never mean "have to." The BRB requires you to re-roll failed Ld tests, while the Daemon AB specifically states you "can" re-roll a Daemonic Instability test. Note also that you cannot actually succeed or fail a Daemonic Instability test: you simply take the test and apply the result.

well, I am not convince the drunk guy in a dive bar wants to give me an option when he tells me I can go f#$^ myself. However, as the always kind kaltheras pointed out to me, the daemon FAQ explicitly states that it is a choice. so...now that I am done with completely derailing this thread (sorry Horace), let me try to get this back on track. I still think Khorne heralds are squishy and they are in combat so prone to giving up those victory points for BSB killed. Putting him on a juggernaut would at least give him a bit of an armor save, T&W boost. Though he can likely be touched by war machines and some spells. For mono Tzeentch, seems like a BSB will contribute little. maybe if he was on a disk to get to the right places (and enemy cannons etc. are busy shooting soul grinders, greater daemons and the like)? grasping a bit.
