Most people posting on this forum for some time will agree on 8th edition being the best WHF has ever been. I agree, partly because I like most of the game mechanics as they are, partly because of the wealth of material that came out during its lifetime.
However, there are things from older editions that were great too, and many of them were lost in the transition between editions.
What are your favourites from older editions, that you would have loved to see get an update for 8th?
For me it has to be the series of campaigns they did during 4th/5th edition. If you don't know them already, do yourself a favour and google "Grudge of Drong", "Idol of GorK", "Tears of Isha", "Perilous Quest" or "Circle of Blood". All feature a narrative of two races in conflict with each other and a set of scenarios following that narrative. On top of the army lists needed to play out those specific events, you often also get suggestions for alternative armies - so each campaign set actually offers you a variety of campaigns. You also got some terrain made from cardboard in each box, often necessary for some of the scenarios.
GW did something similar with "Sigmar's Blood" in 8th edition - and I thinkthat book is amazing. I just wonder why they did it only once? Those older campaign sets provided more value due to the suggestions for alternative armies, and all were filled with inspiration for building an army. Especially the aspect of army bulding - you needed smaller forces for the first three scenarios and usually fielded them all together in the last one - was kind of a license to print money for GW. I can only speak for myself, but whenever I do as much as a bit of reading in those old campaign books, I get that itching of "dammit, I should build an army of X to play this!". I can't be the only one!
So how about you?

I loved those campaign packs and had most of them (you can see a couple of the dwarf buildings in the terrain box I retrieved from my folks at the weekend). Frustratingly I have managed to lose the original books over the years (bar the grudge of Drong) but have PDFs of them at least. I love all the campaign books that GW released and have most of them as originals. For me though, I would have loved to have seen a new advanced Heroquest released. I know it’s not exactly tabletop but it is still in the setting. Warhammer quest was ok but didn’t itch the scratch AHQ did.

I really wish that they would of used an official twitter account to answer any and all rules questions. Would of been great and a great resource.
An updated generals compendium.
Some more expanded siege rules (more than whats in blood in the badlands)
Bret, beastmen, skaven 8th edition books
If we are going on wish list, then further down id say additional 8th books for Orcs and Goblins and Tomb Kings, as i believe they were some of the first 8th books and it always felt to me like those books didnt flow as well as the later 8th books.
And why not, Cathay, Dogs of War, Albion, Nippon, Kislev, Araby,A chaos marauder book (with options for Kurgan, Tong, Norscan etc armies), Ind etc fully fleshed out books (im being greedy now)
Oh, and additional campaign books (why not an expedition to the southern wastes for...reasons).

Oh and perhaps a newer version of the citadel journal. Loved that publication back in 4/5th.

A while ago I went through and purged all my WD, saving just the articles (ie fantasy stuff) that I wanted to keep. I began to notice how GW killed off fantasy all by themselves. I found TONS of articles surrounding 6th edition. All sorts of conversion articles, alternate armies, terrain articles, etc. As you get in to 7th it starts to wain and become all 40k all the time. More kits, articles, etc. When 8th hit you can really tell only token support. Sure they had some nice stuff come out for supplements but the magazine hype and support was long gone. 😕 So back to the question at hand: I miss the support articles, terrain articles and all around geekery for the armies that we saw during 6th edition. That was the golden age of fantasy.

All excellent nominations.
I kind of hope the new fantasy is a bit like a scaled up version of the old campaign packs as they re release the old world in parts.
GW could certainly have put out some kick ass little expansion campaigns with new fancy bits of scenery like they make now. Almost like mini starters. I suppose they were almost going to do this via FW before they canned fantasy with the Blackfire Pass stuff that was going to come out

I second the wish for an updated General's Compendium. IMHO, that is the single greatest book published by GW. There is so much amazing content crammed into it...I would need another lifetime (or two) to try out all the ideas contained within.

Yeah, I remember all of those short scenarios in White Dwarf back inna day. That'd be good. Plus, new Chronicles books, featuring different variations of armies (like Kislev is to the Empire) and maybe a couple of thematic scenarios to play out as well as campaigns. That'd wrap it all up for me.

The think that was single most needed for updating in 8th was Bretonnia, hands down.
Yes, Beastmen and Skaven didn't get 8E books. Bretonnia didn't even get a 7E book. It's so out of date it's ridiculous.

Nice, some great suggestions in very short time. Nostalgia galore!
I actually completely forgot about the "Generals Compendium", shame on me. That one was pure hobby gold, awesomeness on a stick! 6th edition material if I remember correctly? I can also completely agree on the notion of WD support. There was some excellent stuff in there for 5th edition too, but 6th edition was truly the Golden Age of WHF support in WD. "Shadows over Albion" anyone, to name just my personal highlight.
Last, but by no means least: Bretonia deserved an update! As did Skaven and Beastmen, but at least they weren't essentially soft-squatted for a lack of better term. How Bret players were treated during 8th edition is verging on the criminal.
For nostalgias sake:

Oh, man. Good times! We sure do have a strong unit of Longbeards here! My beard is getting longer by the day......😜 Truly the General’s Compendium followed up by Blood in the Badlands are both fabulous works. Both done by hobby geeks who loved their armies and had a passion for them! That’s the stuff I miss the most. 😢 Definitely tho’ the Bretonnians are in dire need of an update. Anyone use the 8th army project lists? Some of their units additions were quite interesting.

I love it, it kept the flavor of bretonnia and an 8th army book. I feel like you can field multiple types of list with the book and its additions werent too crazy.
