The Multiple Wounds special rule has never sat right with me. The application of the rule seems problematic in certain situations. Perhaps someone on here has a clear answer on the topic!
For illustration purposes, let's assume that Kholek Suneater is fighting in close combat. His magic weapon, Starcrusher, has the Multiple Wounds (D3) special rule. Let's assume that inflicts 4 unsaved wounds. When rolling for his D3 Multiple Wounds he rolls a 2, 3, 2 and 2 (in that order). How is the rule applied in the following 3 scenarios (assuming that there are no characters or champions in any of the units)?
#1 Fighting a single opponent with more than one wound (i.e. Arachnarok Spider)
This one seems to be pretty straight forward; a simple application of the rule. Simply added the four results up: 2+3+2+2 = 9 . 9 wounds are inflicted on the Arachnarok and you have one dead ugly big spider! Correct?
#2 Fighting a unit of single wound models (i.e. Witch Elves)
This one seems pretty straight forward as well. As per page 45 of the BRB, "remember that each model cannot suffer more wounds than it has on its profile". In this case as each Witch Elf cannot suffer more than a single wound, the Multiple Wounds are wasted and 4 Witch Elves die. Correct?
#3 Fighting a unit of multi-wound models (i.e. Kroxigor: with the assumption that each Kroxigor in the unit is at its full 3 wounds)
This is the scenario that has never sat right with me. How is the rule applied?...
Those are all the possible applications I can think of. Hopefully my explanations make sense.
Thanks in advance!

- Add together the multiple wounds, 2+3+2+2 = 9. 9 wounds equals 3 dead Kroxigor.
- Apply the multiple wounds step by step in order (the order in which they were rolled... 2...3...2...2). The first multiple wound (which was a 2) is applied, leaving the first Kroxigor on 1 wound. The next multiple wound (which was a 3) is applied to the Kroxigor who is sitting on a single wound, stripping away its last wound, and having the remaining two wounds wasted. The next multiple wound (which was a 2) is applied to the next Kroxigor, leaving it on a single wound. Finally the last multiple wound is applied to the single wound Kroxigor, killing it, and wasting the last wound. In total exactly two Kroxigors are killed, and the rest of the unit is unharmed.
- Apply the multiple wounds in a selected order. Apply the multiple wound roll of 3 to the first Kroxigor, killing it outright. Then apply two of the multiple wound rolls of 2 on the next Kroxigor, the 2+2 wounds is enough to kill the Kroxigor, with one wound wasted. Lastly apply the final multiple wound of 2 on a third Kroxigor, leaving it on a single wound. In total two Kroxigors are killed and a third Kroxigor is wounded twice.
- Apply three unsaved wounds to the first Kroxigor, which dies, and with all the multiple wounds of those three unsaved wounds being wasted. Apply the fourth and final wound to a second Kroxigor, in this case that multiple wound was rolled a 2, leaving it on a single wound. In total 1 Kroxigor is killed and a second Kroxigor is wounded twice.
- Some other method?
Those are all the possible applications I can think of. Hopefully my explanations make sense.
