Do spears and shields get a Parry Save?
Thank you. Much appreciated.

No, only HW & Shield. Nor can you choose to use HW & Shield instead of spear & shield, because you must use the spear, it being a special CC weapon.
BRB p. 89: "If a warrior is fighting with a hand weapon and a shield, then he has a 6+ ward save."
BRB p. 90: "If a model carries a special close combat weapon, he must fight with it in the Close Combat phase - he cannot elect to wield his hand weapon instead."

I always thought that was a bit of a missed opportunity.
I think you should be able to choose what weapons you use at the start of combat, but you have to stick with that weapon until you leave combat (or have a special rule like Bretonnians/Black Orcs)

However, I think spears should have armour piercing - then it'd be a real choice for some units.
Eg 20 High Elf Spears could get 20 s3 ap attacks, or have 15 s3 and a Parry -
Dwarfs get a huge boon though, hehe - Hammerers with shields get a decent buff!
enemy dependant, could be juicy

Back in 7th you *could* do this, and it was really helpful, adding an additional layer of tactics. You chose at the start of combat which weapon the unit would use, and they then used that weapon for the rest if that combat.
Though sword and board was different then, adding an additional +1 to your save, rather than a party

To clarify what Morvael said: +1 to your armour save. The same was true in the 6th edition. Of course, the 7th edition was really 6.2.

or have a special rule like Bretonnians/Black Orcs) Sorry, what rule do the Brets have? I know Black orcs have a rule but wasn’t aware Brets had something. Greg

Brets have a rule that if they have a Lance, they must use it on the charge. But in subsequent rounds of Combat they can use any magic weapon (unless that is the Lance, ofc lol)

Yea but you can’t make parry saves when mounted anyway.

As so often, the thread deviated from the original question and DiscoQing's posts had no bearing on the issue of parry save anymore.
