Hi everyone, We played a battle last sunday after a long pause. High Elves vs Chaos; High Elves won :-( :-) We faced a question regarding the charge distance. In all examples of the book, the units are facing each other; the charge distance corresponds to the shortest path between the two units. The charging player moves straight, does a wheel to bring as many warriors in contact (or to avoid obstacles) and does a free wheel to align both units. What if the charging unit has a LoS but needs to wheel before moving straight to the nearest point of the enemy unit? It is unclear in the rulebook and we just consider the shortest path and not any other movements for the 2D6+M roll. In the following example, the goblins see the dwarves and the shortest distance is 4 inches. Meanwhile, they have to wheel for 2 inches before moving in line straight into contact. Should the charging distance be 4 inches or 6 inches? Well, in this case, it does not matter as the goblins will come into contact but during the battle, this was 12/14 inches for a chaos unit to charge elves. Hope the following pic will be visible: www.dropbox.com/s/lqffchk17b353yl/gob.jpg?dl=0Thanks - Pascal

It's whatever the actual movement required to get there is... You measure the initial wheel, measure the distance to the unit the get your free 'shut the door' wheel in. 🤷🏻♂️

To make a successful charge you need to roll/beat the closest distance.
After that you can complete the charge at ANY distance following the rules for completion of a charge, maximum one wheel and the right facing and maximum models and so on.
So technically you can roll a 8” charge dice and then move 22” to make sure you maximize models and make a good placement for overruns and so on.

Reminds me of a similar debate I had with a friend about formations.
A very deep unit like 60 Skaven or 15 bret knights, moves forward 3", wheels 90° and then moves the rest of their movement...
The guy's at the back of the units have moved a lot further than their movement, hehe.

strutsagget summed it up pretty well. so it's 4" in your goblin dwarf example. Sidenote: your ex2 looks very much like a flank charge (go wolf riders) though that doesn't change the charge distance of course.

Thanks for the answers. Oops, I should have drawn the goblin unit more 'north'... it looks like a flank charge indeed on the picture :-)
