Does anyone know if an Assassin can be placed in a unit of Shades that are scouting? I wasn't sure since the Assassin doesn't have the Scout special rule but it does say he can be placed in an infantry unit that isn't Harpies.

If he is deployed in a unit of Shades, they cannot be deployed as Scouts anymore.
BRB p. 100: "Unless otherwise noted in the text of the rule itself, a special rule applying only to a character does not apply to the unit, and vice versa. Most special rules are there to represent specific skills or powers — you couldn't learn to shoot a longbow by standing next to someone who could, so why would you become able to perform a Killing Blow, deploy as a Scout, and so on?"
This was confirmed for the similar Vanguard special rule by BRB Official Update Version 1.9, p. 10:
Q: If a character is deployed as part of a unit with the Vanguard special rule, can that unit still make its Vanguard move? (p79). A: If the character in question has the Vanguard special rule as well, then yes, they may. Otherwise, no, the character’s presence prevents the unit from using Vanguard.

I had to go back and do some archive digging, but this is now the correct interpretation of the assassin rule. The old text used to say "He begins the game hidden in one of the following units:...." and shades were on this list. As far as I understand, because he was not "deployed" in this unit, it did not stop them from scouting. The next and most current edition says "An Assassin can choose to deploy 'hidden' in another Dark Elf infantry unit. The new wording still allows him to deploy within Shade units, but as he is now deployed in them, the rules stated above stop those shades from scouting. I spent far to long digging up my old books to look into this, as I was sure that they were allowed to deploy in scouting units, but it seems that I was just recalling the glory days of the 7th edition army book. Thanks for that infuriating trip down memory lane!
