Hi, I'm looking for a reason that yiu can't put a mounted bretonnian paladin in men at arms but I can't find one? Also while using the virtue of empathy must you still pay the points for his horse? Thanks in advance

1. A mounted Paladin can join them, but he would not get the benefit of the "Look Out, Sir" rules, since he would not be of the same troop type. 2. No. Normally, if "not mounted on a Royal Pegasus, a Paladin must ride a Bretonnian War horse" (Bretonnia AB p. 67), but since the VoE overrides this, you do not need to pay for the horse either.

I don't see any rules preventing Knight characters from joining Peasant units. However, since the model footprints don't match (20mm infantry vs. 25x50mm cavalry) he'll have to sit on the side of the unit instead of within the ranks and gets not LoS! saves.
VoE allows the character to not take a mount, if you choose. If you don't take the mount you don't have to pay for it. This way the character CAN stand within the ranks of the unit and get LoS! saves.
It's also the only way you can legally field a 500-point Bretonnian Force since you are required to take a BSB. So the Paladin BSB is mounted (74 points, so 51 points for other options), and the general is a Lord on foot with VoE and a shield (123 points).

Just to clarify what vulcan said: he does not lose LoS! saves because of the footprint, but because he would be of a different troop type. However, because the footprints do not match, he would be "ignored when working out the number of ranks in the unit and if it counts as a horde" (BRB p. 98).

Thanks all for confirming all my thoughts. Looks like I will need to find a foot knight model I like. You can use a Knight helmet on the Men-at-Arms champion if nothing else. Reaper also has some good ones. But there's a lot of knight models out there that don't really fit the GW Bretonnia esthetic, so it might take some searching. IF you're already using 3rd party minis the task becomes easier.

I might end up doing something simple to begin with before finding parts for a more intricate conversion, also need a foot king for when beaquis is killed from beneath him

GW did have some Bretonnian foot knights in their classic range.

GW did have some Bretonnian foot knights in their classic range. Yep. And they generally cost an arm and both legs on e-bay. Don't expect them to come cheap from other sources either.

I don't think this is entirely right unless someone who knows better wants to correct me, the FAQ tells you to ignore the section where the BSB requirement is stipulated. Don't have the book to hand to quote actual sections but as far as I can tell it is not required.

It's not in the FAQ anywhere I've seen. But it has been a while...

FAQ:
Page 64-65 – Marshalling the Host. Ignore these pages and use the rules for ‘Choosing Your Army’ in the Warhammer rulebook.

The mandatory BSB requirement is not just to be found in the obsolete "Marshalling the Host" pages, but also in the "Army Battle Standard" rules on page 67, which are still valid: "The army must include one Paladin[...] who must be upgraded to an Army Battle Standard bearer at no additional cost."
