If a character is in a unit and is killed, would invocation allow you to bring that character back or are they lost forever? Under resurrecting fallen characters (pg 26 of the Vampire Counts AB) it says that “if the target consists of a single model, such as a line character or corpse cart, then is can never exceed its starting wounds total.” With that wording, it makes me think that even a lone character that is killed could be resurrected. If that is the case, do you need to keep track of where that character died to determine where the target is? But then I’ve also read that once a unit is destroyed completely, you can’t bring them back. What is the limitation of invocation with characters?
here is what happened in the game last night. Turn 1, my level 2 Necromancer casts a spell and miscast, I rolled a 3 for dimensional cascade, and then a 2 for him to be removed as a casualty (with 10 grave guard and a would on my eight king bsb... things did not go well last night 😒). There were still 8 grave guard left as well as my BSB for that unit. In turn 3 I managed to get an invocation off that effected that grave guard unit. Is it possible to bring back the necromancer who had died? It was my understanding that I could not do that and that I couldn’t use invocation to heal the missing wound from my BSB, but could use the lore attribute to bring him back to full wounds. Was this played correctly or did I miss out on the possibility to bring back my necromancer?

A spell needs a target, and therefore simply cannot target a unit/model that does not exist. And since a model that has been removed earlier is not a friendly model within 12" when the spell is cast, non-existing models cannot benefit from the Lore Attribute either.
In any case, the Invocation of Nehek cannot be used on characters. As it says in "Resurrecting Fallen Warriors" (not characters!): "Unless specifically stated otherwise, spells and magic items that restore lost Wounds cannot heal characters or their mounts . If a character has joined a unit, only the unit will recover lost Wounds." Since the Invocation of Nehek does not specifically state otherwise....
Note also that the Curse of Undeath only allows a model to "recover a single Wound," not to bring it back to full Wounds.

Yes @ curse of I death only bringing back one wound. I said that the BSB went back to full because he was only missing one wound. Thanks for clearing up Invocation for me.
