I've been working on a set of skirmish rules for 8th edition. The idea is to use the 8th edition rulebook with as few modification as possible. This is the first draft I've come up with. Note, for skirmish based games like this, it is best to use objective based scenarios rather than just a battle to the death. If the future I'm going to write of some scenarios.
Please let me know your feedback, especially if you try out any games.
Warhammer Warbands
Warhammer Warbands games use the 8th edition Warhammer rulebook, army books, and supplements to pit small Warbands against each other using the following rules modifications.
In a game of Warhammer Warbands, players choose a single Warhammer army list to compose a warband worth up to a maximum of 200 points. The standard rules for ‘Choosing Your Army’ described in the Warhammer rulebook are ignored. Instead, follow Warband construction rules below:
• A Warband may have a maximum of 20 models.
• Warbands may only include the following Troop Types: Infantry, Cavalry, War Beasts, and Monstrous Infantry.
• 50% (i.e. 100 points) of the Warband’s total points allowance must be attributed to models selected from the Core Units selection of the chosen army list.
• All units are chosen in the normal manner, except each and every unit choice has a Unit Size of 1, no more, no less.
• Units may take equipment options as normal, though models may not be upgraded to musicians or standard bearers. Unit Champions may only be included in the Warband as described below.
• The Warband must include 1 Hero choice character OR 1 Unit Champion model (who will count as a character model) to act as the Warband’s Captain. Friendly units within 6” of the Warband Captain may use the Leadership value of the Warband Captain instead of their own (provide the Warband Captain is not fleeing).
• A Warband may include up to 1 additional Hero character OR Unit Champion model (who will count as a character model).
• Lord choices and Battle Standard Bearers may not be taken in Warhammer Warbands.
• A Warband may include a maximum of 2 Levels of Magic.
• A Warband may include a single magic item worth of to 20 points.
Warhammer Warband Rules
All the standard rules for playing a game of Warhammer apply, with the following modifications.
Incapacitated Models
When a model is reduce to 0 Wounds, lay the model on its side, rather than removing it from the tabletop. The model is incapacitated and may not participate further in the game while it remains incapacitated, nor may it be attacked in anyway other than in close combat, described below. Models may move through incapacitated models as though they were open terrain. Any enemy model may attack an incapacitated model in close combat as long as the attacking model is not engaged in close combat with any other non-incapacitated enemy models. Close combat attacks will hit incapacitated models automatically, though ‘To Wound’ rolls and saving throws are taken as normal (though an incapacitated model may not may a parry save). If an incapacitated model suffers 1 or more unsaved Wounds from close combat it is removed as a casualty. Incapacitated models never take break tests.
During the Start of the Turn phase, the player whose turn it is must roll a D6 for each of their incapacitated models. On the result of a 1-4, the model has succumbed to its injuries and is removed as a casualty. On the result of a 5+, the model is restored with 1 Wound. Place the model upright on its base facing any direction. The model may not take any other actions for the reminder of this player Turn other than making a standard Move during the remaining moves part of the Movement phase (the model may not march).
Cavalry Models
When a model with the Troop Type: Cavalry suffers its first unsaved Wound, the rider is not harmed. Instead, it is assumed the rider’s steed is slain. Remove the Cavalry model and replace it with an appropriate Infantry model. The rider is now an infantry model retaining all of their equipment. The only exception, is a model armed with a lance – if the model was armed with a lance, it is discarded.
Winds of Magic
In the Magic phase, players do not make a 2D6 roll for the Winds of Magic. Instead, each player rolls a single D6 to determine the size of their magic dice pool (i.e. dispel or power dice as appropriate).
All Alone Tests
Ignore the standard rules for Panic. Instead, a model must take a panic test at the start of their turn if there is no friendly model within 6”.
