Hey all, I was listening to the latest video from Mountain Miniatures where Steve is reviewing the Dwarf book. I got to thinking about the Anvils of Doom, which is often lamented as being way over costed for its points. I have tried to come up with some ideas to make it more balanced for the points without making it too good (not 6.5 ed good). One idea that stuck out to me were the Ancestor Runes from Storm of Magic.
What do you guys think of giving the Anvil access the the 3 Ancestor Runes in addition to the 3 Runes from the Dwarf Book?
For reference the Ancestor Runes are all range 24 inches and as follows
Ancestor Rune of Grungni: Augment, target gains Fight in Extra Rank, reroll misses in hand to hand and shooting, lasts until carter's next phase.
Ancestor Rune of Grimnar: Direct Damage, 2D6 Strength 4 hits.
Ancestor Rune of Valaya: Augment, Unit regains D3+1 worth of models, as described in Regrowth, and becomes Unbreakable until the carter's next phase.
Gungni & Valaya are good but I wouldn't consider them broken. Grimnar is basically a repeat of Wrath & Ruin but some other lores have two direct damage spells. For the sake of simplicity have the Ancestor Runes strike on a 5+ just like Wrath and Ruin.
I think adding in 3 more runes gives some more flexibility for casting. I find when playing the Anvil either you have a bunch of leftover dice OR you never get the good Rune off. You can only cast each rune once or the opponent doesn't care about Wrath & Ruin and Hearth & Home. They throw everything they have at stopping Oath and Steel. Having some more Runes with teeth makes you and the opponent think more.
What do you guys think? Playable?

I'd say give it a go. It definitely needs something. Those additions would certainly make me much more wary about the magic phase.
I've always thought it was a bit silly that Dwarves don't like magic, so they just never use it. Clearly they do, it's just been minimized because artillery. That's just stupid to me.

I don't think the vanilla anvil is *that* bad, just quite boring to play with

Yea it definitely needs something. Personally I’d like to see the anvil more akin to the skaven screaming bell or the dark elf couldron where it can be embedded in a unit and has impact hits etc. I’d also give runelords Ld10 to make them actually worth taking over 2 runesmiths. But maybe it’s just my nostalgia for the 4th Ed model and fluff from the 4th book - The artwork on the inside front cover is awesome

I think just more rune options would be nice. As it is there are essentially only 2 things to cast since one of them is only marginally beneficial. They are not that "fun" either

As the points are it will not make its value back very often. Compared to what other armies can do with a same points in a caster.

Something similar the the Empire War Alter would have been cool too.

Yes exactly it would be great to have a big centrepiece (without running Thorgrim!)
On a side note you mentioned Steve from MWG. I think he missed an own goal with those book reviews because he’s well liked with a big audience but he’s been quite unprepared for the book review videos and they come out as if they’re for beginners.. Which would be fine if he knew the books inside out but he doesn’t unfortunately. I think he’d be better off finding people who do know the books inside out and doing it as an interview format. Great guy though - I like his phrase ‘that’s a panicking’ 😁

I also like that he’s doing the book reviews as I really like his camera presence but dear god it’s killing me how badly he knows them and is messing up some of the rules. I appreciate he’s doing them on the fly with no editing but a bit of preparation would make a world of difference. I’m one who doesn’t mind the MWG rules errors as much as a lot of people as I appreciate that they play multiple systems and it’s one thing remembering rules whilst typing and another whilst playing and filming but even this was bugging me. I much preferred it when he got Kyle on (our very own MrPancakes) as he was able to remember rules off the bat (and I preferred the format).
