If I understand correctly, you are asking what happens if a character mounted on a chariot fails their Dangerous Terrain test?
There is nothing specific that I can find, in the rulebook, however the rulebook FAQ does have this:
Q: When hits, other than from shooting and close combat attacks, are inflicted upon a unit how are these hits resolved? (p42) A: As per the ‘Resolving Unusual Attacks’ box. Note that all hits resolved in this way will count as shooting attacks for working out who is hit.
This would lead me to believe that you would determine how many wounds were done (since chariots that fail DT take D6 wounds) and then randomize the wounds like hits from shooting (typically 1-4 on the mount, 5-6 on the rider). You could also do this with the single DT wound if a character was riding a monster that failed a DT. Then, anyone wounded could take any ward saves they may have.
There is definitely a grey area since the faq says “hits” as opposed to wounds, and the DT rules say “model”. I personally feel that the rules support randomizing the wounds or wound, but I would be OK with only the mount taking all the wounds as well.

In the 7th edition BRB, it was specifically stated that characters were not affected, but not in 8th, where it is indeed a bit of a grey area. The FAQ does not really seem applicable, since, as rahotep75 himself says, it is about allocating hits, not Wounds. The rules can still be read that it is the chariot only that is affected, but it is not exactly clear-cut. BRB p. 105 specifies: "If a character has taken a chariot as a mount, the whole model is treated as having the troop type 'chariot' and follows all the rules for both characters and chariot models." Although the whole model has the troop type "chariot," there are still some rules that pertain only to the rider and only to the mount. For rules pertaining only to the chariot, you never use the Wounds, Toughness and armour saves of the crew and the beasts, but the ones of the chariot. Everything involving movement pertains only to the chariot, and since the Dangerous Terrain test are triggered by movement, they affect only the chariot itself.

Everything involving movement pertains only to the chariot, and since the Dangerous Terrain test are triggered by movement, they affect only the chariot itself. I don't follow, where is this assumption coming from?
