Check out this interview with Creative Assembly's Andy Hall who worked on Total War Warhammer III and talks about the background lore of Grand Cathay...And he has the official Games Workshop Warhammer: Grand Cathay army book for 8th edition in front of him...

official Games Workshop Warhammer: Grand Cathay army book for 8th edition So I've heard a few people mention this- was this something that just wasn't released at the time or something that they've put together from scraps around the office juts for total war/the old world? I've not really been keeping up with total war news as I'm not really a fan of the game itself.

Hi Mallo, No, it was not something that was not released. Both companies decided to do Cathay for Total Warhammer and the design process of the Total War includes converting the 8th edition army books into the game. The Total War series is 100% based on 8th edition WFB. So, GW wrote a brand new 8th edition army book on Cathay for Creative Assembly. The assumption is that this book will than be the base of the Old World Cathay army book. I'm hoping that WFB players will be able to get their hands on this 8th edition version in the near future...maybe as a PDF? Also, the Old World game may be closer than we think. In the video I posted, Andy Hall mentions that Total War III is delayed for reasons that may be apparent in the future. What could that possibly mean other than a duel release with GW... What if GW releases a range of Cathay miniatures with the 8th edition book at the same time as Total War III to take advantage of the excitement of the new faction? I think this could happen especially if the Old World game is still a ways off...

Funnily enough Andy Hall was originally part of GW, a Skaven player in the Fantasy days renowned for having particularly poor luck with his war machines (very fitting for Skaven), I don't know if he's actively transferred to CA as part of the deal to make sure Warhammer: Total War fits GW's vision or if he left GW and then decided to work for CA. That's amazing that they actually made a full hardcover army book for Cathay. Perhaps Cathay was going to be a planned army if it hadn't been for AoS then, because if they'd just made a list specifically for Warhammer III they wouldn't have gone to all the trouble of putting it into a full-colour hardback. It would be fantastic if GW did release it somehow, but given they've ditched all support for 8th I don't think it's likely, sadly.

lordofskullpass, Andy states in the video that they made the Cathay army book because it's part of the design process for Total War - the army books are crucial source material for the computer game.

It would be a really cool nod to the fans if they just dropped the army book

It would be a really cool nod to the fans if they just dropped the army book And that is why it will never happen. I would love to be proved wrong though!

Really interesting video. I thought I was a warhammer nerd but I always forget how much Loremaster Sotek takes it to the next level 😂

The one bit that confused me in the video was they were talking about how eshin got their skills from Cathay. I seemed to remember they got them from Nippon or am I misremembering. They also didn’t mention Nippon, just Ind and the Hinterlands of Khuresh. Am I missing something?

They have nothing to lose - they could do a small print run and I'm sure it would instantly sell out.

I'm not much of a fan of the total war games, so other than watching the cinematics I tend to skip over posts over at GW etc on the game, so I was a bit behind on what was going on with this army book!
