It's all looking great! A simple dry brush and some tufts on the bases would improve the look for little effort I think. There is a drybrush of Karak Stone over the Steel Legion Drab base color, but I think I need to increase the contrast. I'm going to try a wash, then drybrush the base color, then hit it with the lighter color drybrush and see if that helps. I'll add tufts as well. Tufts will definitely help the bases. I've ordered some tufts, which should arrive tomorrow. Day 20: Basecoated and washed the bases for 16 skeletons. Will do the base rims with the next layer.

But the extra work you put in is working, bases are looking much better already!

Day 21: Did the base rims and the first drybrush/overbrush layer. Got the tufts in the mail, so I can apply those once I finish the painting.

Day 24: Another little bit of work on the bases, been a lot of days where I've only been able to paint for twenty minutes and progress has been sloooooow.

Day 24: Another little bit of work on the bases, been a lot of days where I've only been able to paint for twenty minutes and progress has been sloooooow. Might seem slow to you but in 24 days you have painted about the same amount of mini's that I paint in a year. So I'd say it is pretty fast. Bases with the tufts on them look great!

That's an excellent looking unit you have coming together there. I've always liked the "white bone" look (I was lazy and did yellow bone for my undead, but I prefer your style).

Haha, thank you for the alternative perspective, it's a good reminder. This is more than I've painted some years as well! That's an excellent looking unit you have coming together there. I've always liked the "white bone" look (I was lazy and did yellow bone for my undead, but I prefer your style). Thanks! I wanted something a little more striking, and think it works. Day 25: Unit done, based, etc. (ignore the movement tray, I'll get around to it).

Day 26: Texture paint and slate on the movement trays for the skeletons and the next unit: 40 ghouls (20 previously done, 20 left to paint). Going to base the ghouls first, paint second, see if that makes a difference.

Day 27: Worked some more on the movement trays and glued slate to the ghoul bases. For some of the ghouls I'm using Warhammer Underworlds models. The feet were molded into the round bases, so I trimmed the base rims, cut them into shape and glued them to the top of 20mm squares. Now they're too tall though. If I cut off the square base rim the height will be right, but they'll be a little too narrow. I was going to try to sculpt new base rims, but I'm worried about getting them to be even. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Would a mold work to get an even base edge?

I typically just cut the model off the base at the soles of their feet and then make the square base fit their pose by using materials like cork, tree bark, etc. You can use some texture paint like Stirland Mud to smooth out the tier transitions. Once that sets, dry brush with a beige (I prefer Baneblade Brown followed by a very light drubrush of Flayed One Flesh) and apply flocking in a couple of spots. Works great.

Yeah, that's probably what I should have done. I kept the sculpted bases as much as possible, which is what now has me in trouble. I think I'm going to try to salvage them, but it's going to be a lot of work. Day 28: Almost completed the movement trays, just need to drybrush the slate pieces and add a few tufts and they'll be done.

Your undead horde is coming along fantastically! Thanks! Day 29: Movement trays finished! Makes the unit look very done. I've started trying to sculpt the ghouls' new 20mm bases out of green stuff. We'll see how this goes...
