I was wondering if anyone had a list of units/characters that have rules in 8th edition, but for which a model was never released? Off the top of my head I'm aware of a couple of O&G special characters, the Tomb Kings Hierotitan the K'Daai Destroyer and some monsters from Monstrous Arcanum, but I don't have a definitive list.
Any help would be appreciated.

The Kdaii almost got a model but it got changed into that big Khorne thing when they canned it. Basically the same model.
Gitilla & Snaggla are the O&G hero ones you refer to.
The only things which I can think of off the top of my head are:
Ku'gath - Special character GUO. Can probably make him from the newer kit sort of.
Palanquins of Nurgle options for DoC/WoC
Chaos Furies - can get something approaching these from warcry
Abyssal Terror mount option for VC
Kholek - WoC special character
Mounted Wight King BSB

Do you want mount options for generic characters? Because that'll add a lot to the list. Same if you want to know re. upgrades such as BSBs or even weapon options.
Also, some entries (such as Horace's Abyssal Terror) had models that were available through 8th, but were ancient to the point that virtually no-one bought them.

As an example, this is Dark Elves: - Malekith - on foot, Cold One, or Cold One Chariot.
- Hellebron - on Manticore.
- Malus Darkblade (the metal model on old "battle cattle" Cold One might have been available for some time during 8th)
- Dreadlord/Master - on Dark Steed (there was an old metal model available during some of 8th, on the old "Disney Pony" Dark Steed), or on Dark Pegasus. The Cold One Chariot kit didn't technically have a specific Dreadlord/Master build instructions, but one of the crew could clearly be built as one.
- Supreme Sorceress/Sorceress - on Dark Steed, or on Manticore.
- Kouran Darkhand.
- Tullaris Dreadbringer.
- Darkshards - with Shields.
- Shades - with Great Weapons (though Menghil Manhide's Manflayers could be used for this), or with Additional Hand Weapons.
No BSB model existed in 8th.

- Lizardmen Mazdamundi - Beastmen Taurox - Skaven Warlord on Warlitter - Skaven Warlord on Great Pox Rat (you can, of course, take the Nurglitch model for that) - All Legion of Azgorh Hobgoblin models: Khan, Cutthroats, Wolf Riders (there are, of course, GW Hobgoblin models, but all of them were OOP when Tamurkhan Throne of Chaos was published) - Chaos Dwarf Infernal Guard with great weapons (and also with blunderbusses if you don't count OOP models with big hats)

Thanks for the replies.
For special characters and mounts as long as the special character exists and the mount exists as a separate model then I don't need it for my list (although others might want it for theirs). Similarly, as long as the army had a BSB model then don't need a list of missing BSB on XXX.

Monstrous Arcanum:
- Arcane Phoenix (but this problem can be solved easily... High Elf Phoenix with a different paintjob)
- Incarnate Elemental of Death - Khemric Titan
- Magma Dragon smaller sizes (there is a official FW model, but obviously it is meant for the biggest version)
- Necrofex Colossus
- Rogue Idol smaller sizes (see Magma Dragon)
- Shard Dragon
BTW, the Storm of Magic book also has rules for units without a model... Zoat and Fimir Balefiend (again, if you don't want to look for very, very old models that are no longer produced)

Okay. I'll do a few more armies (I can't remember them all well enough, but some I do know thoroughly): Wood Elves: - Glade Lord / Glade Captain - on Forest Dragon.
- Spellweaver / Spellsinger - on Elven Steed, on Great Eagle, on Unicorn.
- Naestra & Arahan - on Gwindalor (Great Eagle).
Vampire Counts:
- Count Mannfred - on Hellsteed, or on Abyssal Terror.
- Vampire Lord / Vampire - on Barded Nightmare (though the old Red Duke model was kind of one), or on Hellsteed.
- Master Necromancer / Necromancer - on Barded Nightmare, on Hellsteed, or on Abyssal Terror.
- Black Knights - without Lances/Barding (not that anyone takes them that way).
Monstrous Arcanum: - K'daai Destroyer
- Incarnate Elemental of Death
- Necrofex Colossus
- Khemric Titan
- Shard Dragon
- Arcane Phoenix

This is just an off-topic grumble from me... Forge World actually sculpted 90% of a new Fimir Balefiend, which was shown off over 5 years ago. They just didn't bother to release it. Also, the models they left out from Monstrous Arcanum (which to be fair, was not too many) were amongst the coolest! I really wanted a Necrofex Colossus, Incarnate Elemental of Death, Shard Dragon  |

I used the chaos space marine maulerfiend with a little converting as the K'daai destroyer, and a converted bone giant as the heirotitan.

That's what makes this hard to judge. In some cases there are ancient models that cover the unit entry but they weren't necessarily available during 8th. Such as Malekith, who had a (special edition?) version of himself on foot, but it was definitely not for sale during 8th's years. |
