Hi,
I´m a returning player from 6th edition.
At my local game store, I´m going to participate in a friendly 1000 pts. tournament 8th edition version 1.8 (Lords < 25 % and Heroes < 25 %).
In the tournament no magic items are allow.
I have just learned the rules for 8th edition and I’m looking for some feedback on my 1000 pts. High elf list.
I´m considering the following:
-----
Lords:
Loremaster of Hoeth – 230 pts.
Core:
14x Archers full command – 170 pts. (loremaster go in here)
5x Ellyrian Reavers (Spear) – 80 pts.
Special:
16x Phoenix Guards, Standard Bearer – 250 pts.
10x Sword Masters of Hoeth, Standard Bearer and Musician – 150 pts.
Rare:
Eagle Claw Bolt Thrower – 70 pts.
Great Eagle – 50 pts.
Total: 1000 pts.
-----
I got this for consideration:
- Instead of Eagle Claw Bolt Thrower take another Great Eagle – then use the rest of the points on the special slot – then perhaps also switch the Ellyrian Reavers out for more archers.
- Instead of Sword Masters (150 pts.) use White Lions (150 pts.) – but are they a good enough hammer-unit?
- Instead of one Sword Masters of Hoeth-unit use 2x 5 Sword Masters with standard bearer (2x 75 pts. = 150 pts.) – but are multi small units (MSU) good in 8th edition low points?
- Instead of Loremaster of Hoeth use an archmage? But I like the loremaster for his toolbox spell selection. In that chase what lore should I use for the archmage?
Sincerely,
Sion997

Hello, fun restrictions. Personally I would choose between either combat oriented and go for 2+/6++ mounted characters(nobles) or shooty with magic support.
This would play sit back and shoot and then sweep in with princes on the left over weakened units. Loremaster would have a place in archers 8x3 and is mostly not for combat as he will die in a breeze when you can’t kit him. But his spells would be awesome in a no scroll environment. Fireball, wyssans wild form and spirit leach are always good.
Shooty High Elves
Loremaster 230
Noble: lance; heavy armour; shield; Battle Standard; Elven Steed (Ithilmar barding) 122
23 Archers: musician 240
5 Dragon Princes of Caledor: musician; standard bearer 165
Eagle Claw Bolt Thrower: 2 × Sea Guard Crew 70
Eagle Claw Bolt Thrower: 2 × Sea Guard Crew 70
Great Eagle 50
Great Eagle 50
997 points
This would play more aggressively and direct with combat oriented.
Combat High Elves
Noble: lance; Dragon armour; shield; Battle Standard; Elven Steed (Ithilmar barding) 128
Noble: lance; Dragon armour; shield; Elven Steed (Ithilmar barding) 103
13 Silver Helms: High Helm; musician; standard bearer; shields 329
Lion Chariot of Chrace 120
15 White Lions of Chrace: musician; standard bearer 215
Great Eagle 50
Great Eagle 50
995 points
I am not saying these lists are perfect but I do think you need to focus in lower point and not try to do everything. Not fond of running single bolt thrower so I would either run 2 or 3 or none.

sion997I really like your list as is. Especially for 1,000 points - you have a bit of everything that will allow flexibility against various armies (i.e. a magic user, a war machine, a flyer, a unit o fast cav, archers, shock troops, etc.). MSU can work in 8th, but you have to use the carefully. Elves are probably the best at it with ASF. Your unit of 10 Swordmasters are a powerful unit, though vulnerable, you want to get them on a flank or rear and only in the front of a enemy unit if they can destroy in a turn. Remember, probably the most significant change from 6/7 to 8E is supporting attacks from the second rank and that fact that the first rank always attacks as long at there are models there. So your Swordmasters cannot charge in and wipe out the first rank (thus eliminating attacks back). Instead, unless the unit is really decimated, the front rank plus supporting attacks in the second rank are coming back at you. This rule makes WFB 8E extremely bloody. Let us know how you do...

Thank you so much for both of yours feedback! I think, I might be in favour of a more balanced list this time around. MSU in 8th edition is probably a too advanced strategy for a beginner like me. But I will definitely take the shooty-list for a spin some day
