Gents,
Does ‘praying to the lady’ occur before vanguard moves?
Praying takes place before battle begins but after deployment.
Vanguards occur after deployment but before either side takes a turn.
I suppose the question is, is vanguarding part of the battle?
I’m of course asking as I have a game tonight and want to try and pull off some shenanigans before I likely get trounced 😂

I don’t have any sources for it, but I’ve always assumed that declaring to pray happens at the same time you would roll to see who goes first. Since it is effectively conceding the roll.
So, army deployment, scout deployment, vanguard moves, then roll for first/declare praying.
A question I had recently was how praying interacts with the Watchtower scenario, or meeting engagement and dawn attack.
I feel that Dawn Attack/Meeting Engagement would be fairly simple in that a Bret player could never seize initiative, and a Bret player would always lose initiative, because praying. Assuming they elect to pray in the first place.
The Watchtower scenario always has the attacker go first, however. And forcing a Bret attacker to go 2nd, seems even more punishing than normal.

What rahotep75 says. The following FAQ makes clear praying happens just before rolling off who goes first. Bretonnia Official Update Version 1.6, p.3: Q: If two Bretonnian armies face each other, how does the Blessing of the Lady work? (p45) A: Both players hide a dice under their palm – if they wish to pray, the dice must show a 6, if they do not wish to pray, it must show a 1. The dice are then revealed. If both players wish to pray, they both get the Blessing and then the game continues as normal (roll to see who goes first). If both players do not wish to pray, neither army gets the Blessing and then the game continues as normal (roll to see who goes first). If one of them wishes to pray and the other does not, the praying army gets the Blessing and the other does not get the Blessing, but gets to choose whether to go first or second.

That confused me even more. What if the die shows anything other than one or six?

Oh, after reading it six times I think I get it. You don't roll the hidden die. You manually position it to show one or six.

So basically, both get prayer, and just roll off 😂
Like Brets should get anyway...
