Hello everyone! As part of my foray back into the hobby, I have been working with my partner to repurpose my old "Wanderers" models into a functioning Wood Elf force. The goal of this project is to make an army for her to join our playgroups and practice by playing against me for fun. As such, she planned out the list based on models that we have/were able to purchase, and it came out as such:
Lords: Spellweaver, Level 4, Lore(?), Magic Items(?) (220 Points)
Characters: Glade Captain, BSB, Great Weapon, Magic Items(?) (104 Points)
Core: 18x Eternal Guard, Full Command, Shields, Standard of Discipline (261 Points) 10x Glade Guard, Musician, Trueflight Arrows (160 Points) 10x Glade Guard, Musician, Trueflight Arrows (160 Points)
Special: 5x Deepwood Scouts, Hagbane Tips (80 Points) 5x Deepwood Scouts, Hagbane Tips (80 Points) 5x Wild Riders, Champion, Standard Bearer (150 Points) 5x Wild Riders, Champion, Standard Bearer (150 Points) 5x Sisters of the Thorn, Standard Bearer (140 Points)
Rare: 6x Waywatchers (120 Points) Treeman, Strangleroots (245 Points)
Total: 1870 Points, 130 leftover for Magic Items/Magic Banners/Other gear upgrades
The army is (mostly) assembled, with the game plan being: Both characters join Eternal Guard unit, hide in woods with Leadership 10 + Stubborn to protect Wizard and bait opponents into a bad fight. 3 Units of Scouting units harass, while 2 blocks of Trueflight Glade Guard stay back and plink off chaff. Treeman and Wild Riders stay near Eternal Guard block and in front of Glade Guard, baiting a classic Hammer and Anvil strat (Treeman shoots enemy, they charge him next turn, he survives because Treeman, enemy gets two flank charges from Wild Riders.) However, she is looking for advice as to how to equip her characters in terms of magic items and spell lore that would compliment this playstyle.
Additionally, my gaming group has agreed that instead of taking the Acorn of the Ages, the Wood Elves are allowed to place 2 woods that scatter (just like the Acorn, but the average amount on a D3) in addition to the 1 they already get to place, so that item is unnecessary. And yes, I have already warned her that Wood Elves are considered to be one of the most difficult armies to pilot, but she is dead set on this army- she loves the lore, the models, and the old-school elven aesthetic way more than any other army in the game. She is very adept at learning strategy games and I have no doubt that she will learn with experience.
Any advice would be more than welcome!

If you gaming group has agreed that you can place 1 wood and gain additional woods at the start of the game then Moonstone seems too good not to take for a character in your block... Enemy getting close, great I can zip across the board now....
Otherwise the standard items - dispell scroll, hail of doom arrow? Give your BSB a bow and the flaming attacks Vs destruction to pop a couple of regens 🤷

That seems REALLY good given a "avoidance/continue nuking" gameplan. I'm thinking something like: Dark Magic, Moonstone, Talisman of Preservation on the Wizard, then Armour of Silvered Steel on the BSB? I'm unsure if going for HoDA + Range threat is better than getting some defense on the BSB for challenges etc... Also our group sees dispel scrolls as a big no-no. The other problem that I'm finding is that taking the HoDA leaves me with an awkward 15 points that I'm unsure of where to go. Also, is the Talisman of 4++ overkill? I run my Archmage basically naked and it has worked out fine, and I know people run just the Acorn on their Spellweavers. Again, I am at a loss.

I'd swap the glade guards trueflight arrows for hagbane tips. Poison is your best friend and it will save you points. On your level 4 I would suggest taking the feedback scroll if someone uses a lot of dice to cast something.

Eternal guard are stubborn with great leadership so would get some benefit from SoD but BoS would give you that extra speed and would work well with the moonstone.

If you save on points, perhaps having your lvl4 use lore of life and if possible slot in a lvl1 using lore of beasts. That's my main go to for magic.

On your level 4 I would suggest taking the feedback scroll if someone uses a lot of dice to cast something. Trueflight are the same cost as Hagbane. I want Trueflight on GG because hitting on 3s at 30" range through hard cover > Auto wounds, especially considering I have Poison on both units of Scouts (They'll be closer, less cover for key targets, etc.) I think, given the suggestions here, I am planning on trying out a few builds, based on how I want that EG + Character Block to function. For "Keep Away/Nuke People:" Dark Magic, Earthing Rod, Moonstone of Hidden Ways, 5++ Ward Talisman on Spellweaver Bow of Loren and HoDA on Glade Captain Remove the Standard of Discipline from EG Puts me at 2000/2000 Points. I don't think that I lose much by taking combat proficiency away from the unit, as the Spellweaver being able to contribute to the ranged nuke threat of the unit is probably better than a 2+ armor save. The Earthing Rod is to prevent the one thing that threatens the Wizard (besides shooting,) which is herself. I'm also considering swapping the 5++ ward out for the MR (2) Talisman, as it achieves the same thing against magic, but applies to the unit for more defense. If the unit is dead in combat anyways, I don't think I need to overprotect da casta. For a more aggressive playstyle: Lore of Beasts, Fencer's Blades, Talisman of Preservation on Spellweaver Armor of Silvered Steel on Glade Captain Standard of Discipline on EG Want to bait the enemy into combat and stand our ground with buff spells to shred enemies. Can still threaten from afar with Wildform on a unit (+1 S/T Elves with ASF is always good, ridiculous on Wild Riders) or Amber Spear. Balanced playstyle: Lore of Life, some combo of magic items on Spellweaver/Captain/Standard. Can threaten from afar with Throne + Dwellers, can also threaten combat with Regen/+4T/Regrowth. Overall, thanks for the advice! I still welcome more, but I think I have a better idea of how to view the EG block. Also, I completely forgot about the Moonstone- I always get it confused with Moranion's Wayshard from the HE book - aka bad item with similar fluff. Side note, I absolutely ADORE how different Magic Lores, Magic Items, and spell selection changes the playstyle of a list. It's so cool!

Unfortunately you can't use Bow of loren and Hail of doom arrow on the same character. When you take the bow of loren that completely replaces the characters asrai longbow and can't fire enchanted arrows. On page 173 of the BRB you have to use the magic weapon over its mundane equal.

I don't think this is right - magic weapons don't replace the bow, they just are used instead of the bow during shooting. The hail of doom arrow is an enchanted item, the model is still equiped with a long bow, and it can "replace it's normal shooting attack" with the HoD as normal

Just read the page again it only concerns close combat magic weapons. So therefore a glade captain can indeed take both. I'm sure this came up before on the forum and the answer was no which was what I based my answer on but glad to be wrong if it means players can get the best of both worlds.

oldmandan: I suspect you are referring to this thread, which is about the Asrai Longbow/Hawk-eyed special rule and the HoDa, and supports what sonofkurnos says.

Thanks for that Fvon, so the specifics are a model with an Asrai bow can use the HoDA. Just quickly though the BRB under the magic items section p 172 and 173 only seems to cover close combat weapons. How would this effect the bow of loren?

Something similar came up for HE: frozenfood's post reminds me that I forgot to dot a t. The magic>special>mundane weapon rule only applies to CC weapons. BRB p. 89: "If for some reason a model has more than one missile weapon, he is allowed to choose which one to fire during the Shooting phase." For the question itself, that does not make a difference. In each Shooting phase, the Handmaiden can either use the Bow of Avelorn (with FA and the Arrows of Isha), or the Reaver Bow. But if she chooses to use the latter, she will not benefit from the Bow of Avelorn special rules FA and Arrows of Isha. You can chose to use either the normal Asrai longbow (with enchanted arrows), or the Bow of Loren (without enchanted arrows). Note that the Bow of Loren is an Asrai longbow too, but it is additional equipment that does not replace the mundane version.
